ok, I just couldn't use aol anymore and I went to check out AT&T dsl and comcast.

apparently comcast isn't available at my area, so I went to the AT&T dsl website. It says that

Up to 1.5Mbps downstream/128Kbps upstream

what does upstream/downstream mean?

upstream = how fast you can send data
downstream = how fast you can download it

My max is supposed to be 100 Mbps, but it depends on your location and everything, so I don't even get half that speed.

the fastest dsl in my area is 1.5mb down and 300k up.

my cable from comcast is 3mb down and 700k up.

i would die if i lost my cable connection

i'm going to take a stab at it and say TB4000 is still on campus or in a purdue-owned building or talking about work, all about 10/100/1000 ethernet. 100 mbps-CAPABLE networks are pretty common on campuses, but not in residential, public networks. not even T3 lines reach that speed; only fiber-to-the-home can but (1) it's only available in certain areas and (2) no telco that im aware of has it running at anywhere near 100 mbps.

my parents have dsl (sbc yahoo), and it is pretty fast. the only problem is, the phone line in the house is way old, which might be the reason why the dsl connection disables temporarily when we pick up the telephone. it reconnects again, after a few minutes. but if u don't have an old house with an old line, it shouldn't be a problem.

i'm planning on getting cable (comcast - no other options) with my roommates soon. however, dsl is WAY cheaper than cable ($20/mo vs. $45/mo), so i wouldn't mind dsl.

Actually, it is my apartment connection that shows the 100 Mbps speed whenever I first log on, but it's never been that fast though. Not Kbps, but Mbps. Like I said, I suspect it's like the maximum possible, but obvious constraints keep it from that point.

You are connecting through a 100Mbps LAN then. Traffic to and from any other computer on your LAN will reach that speed, but your speed to things on the internet are limited by your apartment complex's connection speed.

My guess is the complex has a T1 or DSL line at 1.544 Mbps, possibly business cable which theoretically can go up to 24 Mbps on DOCSIS but is probably capped around 3 Mbps.

Most computers will not be able to achieve 100Mbps. At that point, it's not the connection that's slowing you down but your hard drive. Transfering files to a suitemate on campus maxed out at around 11-12Mbps.

Yep. God bless Comcast. I've lived in LA for the past several years and after Comcast took over, things got wayyyy faster.

It's actually come down a lot the past 3 years due to cable and DSL -- we re-negotiated our contract (used to have a 95th percentile tiered T1) and we ended up saving $200/m by getting the full pipe. And even more since the early days when T1 was competing with 56k leased line and 128k ISDN. Used to be $10k/month in the early 90's. Gotta love the pace of technology!

I'd recommend DSL if you're a webmaster who needs a CONSTANT stable connection, cable if you're anyone. Myself I'm a webmaster yet cable is still preferred, it's so damn fast.

Are you unable to get broadband because of cost, or because there are no nodes in your area? DSL has some distance restrictions, but Cable TV is present in just about every American community with electricity, you ought to be able to get cable internet at least. Don't some satellite TV providers offer broadband internet?

truMp
01-29-2005, 06:51 PM
It really depends on the providers in your area and the relative distance of the connection from your home to the provider. VERIZON =)!

while, to make a long story short, I used to live in a college apartment when i was in school, so I had blazing fast T1 lines.

But i graduated last year and moved back home, so I'm stuck with AOhell [my parents for some reason don't care for cable internet or TV].

But what the heck, I'm calling comcast tomorrow to set up an install date

Cable and wireless, it isn't bad. You just have to understand that you need to cycle your equipment once in a while when they reset your IP (or something like that). I've got cable at my apt and home as well. Both Comcast I believe and service is just fine.
