THE GOLDEN RACE
By Joseph Tang
A publisher of an Asian American magazine once suggested Asian Pacific Americans ("APAs") call themselves "the golden race" or "gold," instead of accepting the mainstream use of the word "yellow" to denote persons of East Asian ancestry. He felt yellow had such negative connotations that we should use gold instead, for positive effect. If I remember correctly, his reasoning had more to do with public perception than anything else.

oh well, goldenworld.org has NOT been taken yet, so it is a feasible domain name if it's easy to change things and if ppl want that. I think most ppl have gotten used to yellowworld tho.
One nice thing about the word "golden" is because gold is such an expansive color and has been used for so many dif ppl's skin tones, it doesn't risk excluding Indians and Central Asians as much as the word "yellow" sometimes does. I mean you can always plug golden as a cultural term, and not a lot of cultures dun use gold, i think.

I think golden is better. Currently doesn't have any negative connections, only positive ones. Why not choose to represent oneself in a positive manner that would more likely be acknowledged by others. Language also transfers values and beliefs (often subconciously) to people.
There are quite a few East Asians I know that have skin tones that aren't close to yellow. It's just a derogatory term created by the gwailos that can easily be done away with. I'm not going to call all these Cantonese people around here non Asian because most of them don't have the epicanthic fold. I've never seen any Indians that are golden in color, have seen Central Asians in books though, but those guys probably had quite of bit of East Asian ancestry in them.

ehh? i don't know anyone who wears copper or bronze colored jewelry. when you ask girls what kind of jewelry they'd prefer (my friends, that is) they've for the most part said silver (and the like) unanimously.

Yeah, but nobody (of the human variety) has a skin color that is remotely close to silver or platinum.

analogies. are you any good at them?
yellow = gold.
white = silver.
i think the white folk are analogous to silver, personally. i'm sure if you had to choose, you'd agree.

yes, doc. that would support the platinum theory, but not silver or white gold. white gold is the same price as yellow gold. silver is cheaper.

I got the analogy, but I kind of thought it was stretching it a little too far since most "white" people aren't even close to white in skin tone, let alone silver or platinum. I think ruby would be closer (although not close), but it wouldn't make sense in the context of the conversation or culture.
