Note: This is a very off beat film and we are looking for twisted people of all shapes and sizes. Think “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” meets “Ghost World” meets “Saved!”. It will be done in a very subtle, comedic style. All actors in the film must be VERY real in their acting styles. Please submit creatively. Actors must be willing to work with gay subject manner. Most high school students can range from 16-25 depending upon their look. There will be several celebrity cameos in this film as well.

Storyline: Rodney Miller isn’t your typical Texas high school student…he is a theater lover and his ultimate dream is to be on Broadway. Awkward and shy, he doesn’t have many people to talk to in his small Texas town that understand him. He ends up finding what he was looking for in his theater teacher, Mr. Cox.

Character List:

Rodney – Cast: Ash Christian (www.ashchristian.com)

Mr. Cox- Cast: Jonathan Caouette (His award winning film “Tarnation” is in theaters now)

Sabrina- Cast: A 300 pound girl of about 17. She has acne and pigtails when we first meet her. A girl with a great heart, she is a total theater lover and adores her best friend Rodney with all her heart. She ends up falling in love with Rudy at the end of the film. She is very dry and saracastic. Must be good with comedy. Think a gothic Ricki Lake from “Hairspray”…LEAD

RUDY – Ethnic Indian/Male. About 16. Short. Braces. dorky, Funny looking. He is either WAY smart or REALLY dumb…we can’t quite tell which one. He has no friends other than Sabrina and Rodney and ends up falling in love with Sabrina at the end of the film…STRONG SUPPORTING

Casting Asian American Lead for indie 16mm B&W feature film.
Role is for lead JIMMY CHIN (Asian American (East Asian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, whatever... in late 20s, early 30s. A two-bit street crook from Queens and Brooklyn, working class NYC.)

English must be perfect and colloquial. No accents please. This role carries film and is in virtually every scene. The closest to this excellent gritty role in previous Asian American film is Vietnam vet in Wayne Wang's CHAN IS MISSING.

The production is low-budget and no-frills shooting primarily on weekends this winter and spring in streets of Queens, Harlem, and Bronx.

Non-SAG, NO PAY.

Food and transportation, and finished tape provided.

We're looking for fresh faces, willing to dive into gung-ho guerilla production. Prior film work, excellent. If not, also good. We're looking for interesting faces, interesting attitude. Great opportunity to shine and star in indie feature. Best if your weekends are free and you're based in NYC (Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn).

Again, we're shooting film, not video. The finished film will have beautiful B&W cinematography.

Think BICYCLE THIEF, think PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET.

We're starting up a new networking group of Asian American and Pacific Islander professionals in the performance, visual and fine arts. As actors and musicians in the Washington, Baltimore and Richmond Metropolitan areas, we felt that a sense of community among AAPI professionals in this area was missing, which is what led us to to form the networking group.

The group is called: APIAN: Asian American and Pacific Islander Arts Network of DC/MD/VA.

If you're interested in joining the network, we have an online forum via Yahoogroups. To see the online forum, subscribe to the listserv or see our calendar of events, go to: APIAN-Online@yahoogroups.com.

Our first event is a networking dinner scheduled for Wednesday, February 9th, in celebration of the Lunar New Year. The dinner will take place at the Seven Seas Chinese Restaurant in Rockville, Maryland and the cost of the event will only be the cost of your meal. For more information or to RSVP, please contact either hawaiian_cranberry@yahoo.com or cynthia@cynthialin.com. Please RSVP by this Friday, February 4, 2005 so that we can arrange for enough seats.

This is a group operated strictly by volunteers, so you will not be solicited for membership or registration fees.

It's good to see someone is exploring IR dating in a movie. If anyone would like to see a film that explores IR relationships other than Asian-White, try Gurinder Chadha's What's Cooking? - the ending is a little too precious for my tastes, but it's pretty good otherwise.

Sounds interesting, though I was gonna ask about the lack of latino or black characters in an IR based flick, but then I suppose the history of the asian/white thing makes it a tad more relevant.

Is there any kungfu involved? Do you have need for a handsome mixed race martial arts master who can throw fireballs, and take it to the ladies? If so, I'm your man.

Why bother?

We all know how this is going to turn out anyway. Below is a rough sketch:

*Ahem*

-All white males will be paired with Asian females.
-All white females will be paired with white males.
-All white males will be paired with white/Asian females at the same time.
-Half of Asian males will be paired with gay white men.
-Half of Asian males will be paired with a toaster or a lampshade.
-White nerds will be paired with Asian females.
-If the planets are in proper alignment, 2 Asian males will attempt to win the affections of a really fugly Asian/white woman in which she will be saved by a white male.

Really. Why aren't they looking at hookin' up our latin and black brothers and sisters?

Serious question: Are there Asian dudes with the name "Ming"?

Ah, but how common is Ming as a guy's name, these days?

It almost sounds like some writer with limited knowledge of Asians and comes up with the first thing that pops into his head -- Ming the Merciless. :frown:

Eh, I pretty much refrain from giving credit to anyone unless my prediction is completely wrong. So far, I've only been wrong once so my pessimism towards such entities and institutions was warranted.

Additionally, I'm not against interracial relationships at all since I've been in one. My moniker was actually given to me by intolerant Asian people because my "clique" of racially diverse friends.

Regarding the whole Asian/white scene, I find that my finely tuned bullshit detector to be a great asset and I'm using it to become the master of the inappropriate comment. See my avatar for more details.

guys, please keep the witty repartee to a minimum? yes, i agree that the wm/af coupling has been overrepresented in film in comparison to am/wf or whatever, but there is also a massive underrepresentation of asians of any sort in film. to that extent, since this thread is designed to encourage a GENERAL increase of APIAs in film, I'm all for posting casting calls for both Asian men AND Asian women.

Besides, even if you feel this way, is it really necessary to belittle sdfilms' project? who knows why brad and jennifer are paired in the film -- perhaps the film intends to use such a casting in order to make a commentary about those couplings in film? at some point, isn't the intolerance of wm/af casting on-screen reaching the point of just outright whining and tearing down members of our own community who are trying to do some general good?

absolutely there should be more am/wf casting, but this griping is a little ridiculous... and counter to the overall goal of improving the state of our community in Hollywood overall.

That's fine that we should encourage more APIA representation, but to what end? Where is the transition from appropriate representation as opposed to the furthering of mainstream ideas? That's my problem. Any increase is not what we as APIA's want, we want quality representation in mainstream media.

Any increase could be quite detrimental because the specifics are not laid out. Any increase includes the stereotypical typecasting of APIA kung fu warriors, japanese geisha girls, chinese railroad workers, communist vietnamese soldiers, etc. Is this the type of increase you're talking about? Would that type of representation prop or hamper our efforts?

This is not whining and for you to say so is an unfortunate consequence of buying in.

granted, but check out the description of the sdfilms project:

The film shows the complexities of interracial dating by exploring different points of view to reveal how there is more than meets the eye with this subject.

He is also seeking asian men and white women in his film. to have brad and jennifer (ironic names doncha think, i'm sure i know where he's going with this...) as a wm/af casting in a movie of that description i'm sure is going to be looking at IR relationships of ALL kinds in a specific socially conscious and critical context.

this isn't geisha girls and samurai swords we're talking about. and besides which, the commentary in this thread wasn't about 'picking and choosing our efforts to increase representation' -- it was a knee-jerk reflex against a wm/af casting choice.

Why bother?

We all know how this is going to turn out anyway. Below is a rough sketch:

*Ahem*

that's hardly fair given what little we know of sdfilms' project.

mrazntre
03-10-2005, 08:33 AM
And the only relationship between the cast members would be what? There's an explicit relational role between the two in question. What about the other members? If this is to be a film about IR and the complexities with all that is attributable to it, then why is there only going to be 1 point of reference?

I understand that this isn't supposed to be a thread on picking and choosing representation, but you fail to realize the dangers of saying that you are looking only to generally increase APIA representation in films. Obviously, you don't understand my argument about those dangers when only a general increase is desired, as opposed to quality increases in representation.

sdfilms should have set forth a better synopsis.
