Clever wives good for men's hearts
Educated women have calming effect on their husbands, reducing risk of heart disease, study shows
LONDON - Being married to a clever woman is good for men's hearts, researchers have found.
Having a well-educated spouse reduces men's risk factors for heart disease, such as leading a sedentary lifestyle and being overweight, the BBC reported.
Do house-husbands need protection if marriages break up?
Well-educated women have a calming effect on their husbands, and the better educated the wife was, the less likely their husbands were to have high risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD), Norwegian researchers found.
They monitored 20,000 married men aged 35 to 56 between 1977 and 1992. The men were part of a national survey looking at cardiovascular disease and risk factors and their blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight, smoking and exercise habits were recorded.
In just over 6,000 men, wives were less well educated than their husbands, while in 5,000 cases, the wives were better educated. The rest had similar levels of education, reported the BBC News Online.
Men with better educated wives had healthier behaviours thus contributing to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, said Dr Grace Egeland who led the research.
This is in contrast to previous research which found that men married to a highly educated women have a high risk of getting CHD.
According to Dr Egeland, men aged 18 or older who married women of the same educational level had a 50 per cent reduced risk of dying of CHD compared to those married to a woman with a lower level of education.
But less well-educated men married to more educated women saw no benefits, reported the BBC.
Dr Haakon Meyer of the Institute of Nutrition Research at the University of Oslo, one of the researchers on the study, said that educated men married to educated women do better because 'the women make decisions about nutrition and lifestyle'.
However, psychiatrist Karen Matthews of the University of Pittsburgh said the contrast between the findings of the Norwegian study and previous studies meant that there was no clear answer about whether a clever spouse helped a man's health.
'At present, the answer is sometimes an educated wife is health damaging and sometimes she is health promoting.'
Dr Belinda Linden, of the British Heart Foundation, attributed the findings to socio-economic background, for which education plays an important role.
'It is not surprising that people in higher socio-economic groupings are less likely to develop CHD as they often have a better standard of health education.

^-- I agree. But I don't think it's the WIFE that is health damaging or promoting. I think it's the LIFESTYLE that COMES with your level of education.

Since the survey was conducted by Norwegian researchers (in Norway I'm guessing), I would assume that there would be no Asian housewives included.
On a side note, when I went to Sweden on business a few years ago, I did meet a Chinese guy who had previously worked in Norway; He had a Chinese wife. So, maybe a handful at best.

Isn't it also true that marriages between educated or rich people end up in divorce?
Also most divorces are of course over money, and that's coorelated to education....with educated/rich wives divorcing lower income husbands being the majority of cases.

plus if your wife is better educated than you, she might think she's better than you, subconsciously, and get dissatisfied being married to who she may perceive as a loser. if my wife divorced me cuz she wanted to "move up," i would start pondering getting a chainsaw. I'm VERY idealistic when it comes to the "till death do us part" of the marriage oaths, even to the pt where i think a guy should stay w/ his wife even when she's cheated on him.
well you wouldn't want a stupid wife, then you'd be doing all the taxes, all the paperwork, making all the bank transactions, etc.
becomes a real headache to put up with an idiot lol

I also read that educated women are more sexually adventurous and more likely to have one night stands (not married educated women).
I remember that article also stating that women with college degrees not only are more likely to engage in one night stands, but also are more open to oral and anal sex. My dad was no dummy when he told me to go after a women with a college degree.
So does this mean women with less educated husbands will be more stressed out?
So do any of you guys expect your future wife to bring home the bacon or stay at home?

I'd like to be with a more educated woman. I mean, there's only so much you can talk about with a dumb person.
I don't really care what she does for a living, as long as she's smart.

Popularity of Career Women Among Bachelors Goes Up
More men choose women with professional careers as their preferred spouses, according to a marriage information company in Seoul.
According to a survey conducted by matchmaking company Piery in December last year, 33 percent of the 407 bachelors surveyed wanted professional career women as their future wives.
In a question about what kind of job was most preferred for their future wives, school teachers topped the rank with 42.8 percent followed by government workers with 35.5 percent while single women with professional careers were placed third, according to Piery spokesman Jang Sung-kun.
``More men appeared to have preferred women with professional careers last year compared to 22.5 percent in 2000 due to worsening economic conditions,ĄŻĄŻ Jang said.
A professional career refers to a profession of high public status as well as economic strength such as medical doctors, lawyers, accountants, and those who passed national examinations, such as the National Judiciary Examination, according to Jang.
While bachelorsĄŻ preference for women working for large conglomerates as their spouses dwindled from 31.3 percent in 2000 to 27.8 percent last year, school teachers held the first place firmly in both years.
``Men prefer school teachers because it gives enough time, including over three months of vacation, for women to tend to household chores as well as to their kids. It can also be a lifetime career unless one quits,ĄŻĄŻ Jang said.
While men appeared to seek more stability in their spousesĄŻ occupation, women gave highest value to their husbandsĄŻ economic strength, according to the matchmaker.
To the question about preferred jobs held by their future husbands, 41.7 percent of the 845 women surveyed said they prefer men working within the legal circle including judges and prosecutors while 30.4 percent said they wished for a medical doctor as their future spouse.
While most women preferred men with ``professionalĄŻĄŻ occupations, male school teachers didnĄŻt make it in the top 10, according to Jang.

Well-educated women have a calming effect on their husbands, and the better educated the wife was, the less likely their husbands were to have high risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD), Norwegian researchers found.
eh, is it just me or is this another case of some dumbass newspaper reporter confusing correlation and causation? Gggggaah :pissed:
Just cuz a study finds that men with low blood pressure more often have educated wives, it doesn't mean that their educated wives caused their low blood pressure.
One could also explain this study as being the result of a selection effect: initially, in the pool of men who marry educated women, the average blood pressure is normal. This means some individuals have high blood pressure, some have normal blood pressure, and some have low blood pressure. However, the ones with the high blood pressure get so stressed out being married to an educated woman that they get heart attacks and die, or they get divorces, and thus wouldn't be counted in a study as married men.
Or their could be a third factor affecting both blood pressure and education level of spouse.
Why freakin newspaper hacks can't understand this concept is beyond me.

Sweden has a noticeable number of Persians, Ethiopians and Bosnians in Stockholm. From my observation, those were the only significant (non-Scandinavian) minorities there.
I think Monkey King posted a link listing Chinese populations in various countries on another thread. Don't remember where.

I would assume that the better educated wives exert a bit more dominance over her husband. At least I would if I were to be better educated or "smarter" than my husband. Maybe that might explain why better educated woman are more likely to have one night stands.

i guess i can see how a better educated wife would contribute to a healthier life, but at the same time, i would think she would be more career motivated, and spend less time at home. does that say something?
but if i'm going to marry a girl, i'm not going to marry her cos she has an education. that's dumb. my wife doesn't need to be smarter than me for me to LOVE her.
btw, what's omg?

ahhh, the joke of lifespans of married men vs bachelors......
Married men live longer only because they wanna be bachelors again before they die, lol
personally I'd like to marry someone who would be as well ed-ja-muh-cated as I would be after college and junk is said and done...I mean, hopefully someone as educated and on the same wavelength would be conpanion-able until we're both old and grey and watching the kids fly the coop...I'd think I might feel a lil overwhelmed by a woman who's like a total genius, and could lose me in a conversation (that's not too hard, I could lose myself in a box during a conversation)...the thought of keeping up with her mental process (any woman's) is pretty interesting...but if she loves me, then it's all good...hahhah

karizma is now legal (i think? didn't she turn 18 a while ago?) and you won't get arrested for sleeping with her. LOL..my friend just turned 18 today and the first thing i told her was, "you're legal! you can now buy porn and go to strip clubs!" and she said, "and i can now sleep with old men!" and apparently, one of my younger guy friends said to her, "damnit, we can't have sex because then you'll be a child molestor."
