do you know the origin of your name? have you looked it up in a plain old merriam-webster's dictionary? or just a name dictionary?
i was surprised to find that lots of names were actually listed in the dictionary in it's fullest form.
mine for example: amy
dictionary said something like latin amare, something about to love and beloved and old french and whatever else.
look up the name christine. hehe. not a very nice meaning. crude. =0
will finish making this a better post later, when i have the dictionary in front of me. doing this from memory. =)

Mine is something to the effect of "crag dweller", with crag meaning rock/cliff/etc.
Didn't know MW had name origins in their dictionaries, I guess maybe for the printed edition. Their online website (http://www.m-w.com/) doesn't have name etymologies.
Why does "Christine" mean in your reference ? The following site (http://www.behindthename.com/) basically says it's a feminine form of "Christian" (obvious meaning).

hmm? my electronic dictionary gave "one who follows or pursues Christ; an adherent; a follower"
Eric just comes out as "leader" or, on behindthename, "ever (i.e. eternal) ruler"

By way of "precious stone," the name "Margaret" also means the flower "daisy." And "daisy" in English means "day's eye" — in other words, THE SUN. A daisy looks like the sun. Similarly (for you Europe enthusiasts out there), a "pizza margarita" is a pizza whoes cheese and tomato toppings look straight ahead like the sun.

I'm sure that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Cheng Pei-Pei shares your quandary. And do you remember the name of Kelly Hu's character in Martial Law? It was CHEN Pei-Pei, perhaps a tip of the hat to the Taiwanese actress...

oooh... good catch! that might just be true, after all, chen pei pei was indeed a very famous martial arts actress in HK. she was dubbed "Queen of Martial Arts Films" in HK back in the 70s. and before The Bruce came around, kung fu films in HK actually usually had female heroine leads.
by the way, i don't think she's taiwanese. she was born in shanghai and then moved to HK when she was a little kid.

Speaking as this site's resident old geezer, my heart goes out to your parents. They're probably aware that you're a little self-conscious of your Chinese name, and they may have thought that seeing a movie star playing a character with that name would make you feel good. They might have hoped you'd say, "Wow, Lucy Liu is playing a character named Pei-Pei! That's my name! It's cool to be named Pei-Pei!"
But then again, my parents never embarrassed me in a movie theater.

What STRANGE links... lol! It's incredibly interesting to see where these things come from...
According to a website, my name is Latin for 'dawn'.
According to my mother, my name is 'light before the morning star', as my middle name has something to do with that.
According to the dictionary...
let's not go there.

Ling Zhaowen. (Though if I needed to spell it out in English, I'd usually try to approximate the Hakka pronunciation and spell it as Lien Tseu-hwun)
Ling2 as in "ling2chen2 = sunrise." Ling itself I think came from the title of servants responsible for storage of cold foods in the imperial household. Actually I'm not sure if this is our real family surname, since our ancestors took on a Spanish name, but it's the one my great-uncle uses.
Zhao4 as in "Zhao4ming2 = illumination."
Wen2 as in "Wen2hua4 = culture."
