i found this survey on asianavenue.com
Which of the following incidents has had an impact on hate crime awareness/advocacy?
Total Response: 12,966
Joseph Ileto, 1999
1.45%
Vincent Chin, 1982
9.76%
Mathew Shepard, 1998
12.86%
James Byrd, Jr., 1998
3.07%
Balbir Singh Sodhi, 2001
2.00%
I am not familiar with any of the incidents
70.86%
i know that most people on AA are teenagers, thus the title of this thread. do you think it's cause for concern that 71% of people who took the survey don't know even who Vincent Chin is? is this is a true representation of Asian teens (and don't forget that very "white-washed" asian kids wouldn't even be on AA)? or is this really not a big deal because they're teenagers and we shouldn't expect them to know much about this stuff?

it usually isn't until college that asians are exposed to asian american history/politics/etc. it would be great if asian american studies could be offered in high school as an elective, especially in california, where there is a substantial asian population.
but yellowworld is a good potential educational tool too. i don't think there is any active teenager on this site that does not know who vincent chin is.
we have the smart kids. :)

I don't know who any of those people are except Matthew Shephard. Maybe if I was reminded, I would remember hearing something about them, but by name, I don't know what the heck happened. *Shrug* The only reason I know who Matthew Shephard is is because they had that shit even on MTV news. I'm not much of a current events type of person. What I see on news previews is basically all I see.

I probably did after reading an article or something. I don't retain knowledge very well... LOL... I'm sure I know the story, just don't remember things like names.

In regards to Vincent Chin, I knew whom he was and what he represented before I started college. I think it might also boil down to where you grew up, I grew up in a predominantly minority and Chinese neighborhood, went to school in a predominatly Asian High School, so might be more in tune than some Chinese kid who grew up and went to school in white suburbia. Though not always the case, just a higher probability.

actually i grew up in a predominantly asian (korean ahem) area and i did not really know jack bout any of those events until Taiwanese American Citzens League camp (vincent chin only) and about sum type of asian activism. To me my world was filled w/ asians and anyone who dared push us down was flattened. then i hopped into another asian dominated world called UCI!

I only know about Matthew Shepard and Vincent Chin. I don't exactly know what happened to Vincent Chin. I've just heard stuff involving him and something about hate crime and tragedy or whatever. What did happen to him? I'm too lazy to look for articles.

well to be honest.. i'm kinda like you, i know that it was a hate crime... but i dont know the full details of the story revolving around Vincent Chin... so this is what i know.. so like anybody can fill in the facts that i'm missing. Anyways, Vincent Chin, he had gotten into an argument at a bar with these 2 other white ppl. The argument got out of hand, cuz it turned into a fight... and Vincent Chin was eventually beaten to death with a bat...
and the reason why there was such an outcry from the Asian American community.. was because the ppl that beat up Vincent Chin to death... they only got like a fine and probation.. and it was because of this unjust punishement placed on them is why the AA community got angry over the handling of this case...

well the whole significance of the Vincent Chin incident was that it united Asian Americans for a cause. probably the largest of its kind in Asian American history at the time.

No. As with every other ethnicity, there are those individuals who are very informed, very involved, and very dedicated. And then there are oblivious kids running around the planet just trying to have fun and live life.

Ahem! You say that as if being socially aware and having fun/living life are mutually exclusive!

Okay, it's hard to do the emphasis thing on the internet. This is what I meant:
And then there are oblivious kids running around the planet just trying to have fun and live life.
