This is a best practice lesson plan.

This sport is played during P.E. classes and for lunch time activity.

Materials needed:A volleyball court, two indoor soccer goals (6 x 12 feet), and a volleyball. Place the goals 8 to 10 feet behind each end of the court and centered. Service areas are on either side of the goals.

Students should have good volleyball skills and a basic knowledge of both the side-out and rallypoint scoring systems of volleyball.

This game is fast and furious. A game is 10 points or a goal, whichever comes first. When a goal is scored, game is over. The team that scored the goal wins the game regardless of team scores. If a goal is not scored, only the service team can win a game.

There are five or six players on a team, goalie included. The goalie isnt allowed to catch a ball to try to keep it out of the goal. Only one person is allowed to defend the goal off the serve. Other than that, a goal is scored under the same circumstances as in soccer. A goal can be scored even if a ball rolls or bounces into a goal.

If the first serve of any player rotating into the servers position is bad, his/her team loses one point and the serve. If the team doesnt have any points and a players first serve is bad, then their opponents receive a point and the serve. After the first serve, if a team makes a bad serve, a team loses the serve, the service team's scoring advantage, and no points are earned. This is the side-out feature

Points can be scored by either team off the serve or during any subsequent play action. This is a rally point feature.

Two points will be awarded to the service team, if off the serve, a ball lands on the receiving team's court untouched.

The service team has the first three hit option of play. The receiving team has two hits off the serve to send the ball back over the net. After the ball has crossed over the net the third time, both teams have the three hit option play.

In a game when neither team scored a goal, the service team has closure. Only a team with serve, that can serve the ball over the net, and score a point/s off a served ball, can win a game. This is a side-out feature.

There is no two point margin rule to win a set, because when working with this kind of offensive and defensive scoring system, an anomalie developed that makes the two point margin of victory rule of volleyball a repetitively redundant feature. That means a service team has closure and the game takes care of its self. (No artificial assimulation needed).

There is a very intense competitive challenge between the server of one team and the goalie of the other. If a ball touches the net on the serve it is considered a bad serve.

My students like it because of its unpredictablility. A game can end with one serve, a new team comes on court, plays to ten points or a goal, and then another team comes to court...and so on and so on.

Students are waiting for me at lunch time...if they want to play volleyball, they can play at the other court....but, you know what.....when we are playing this game, there is no other team net sport played. They are either signing up a team to play, or making up a new team for another game...and so on ..and.. so on......................

For the more advanced players, the game would include the xunk, the ace, and the kee.

This is a best practice lesson plan

Its a non-contact sport.

Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, USA, is about 1,000 miles east of the Phillippines.

Rocball is the indigenous sport of this community.

I may have been mistaken, but I thought this thread was designated for sport related discussions.

What's a loggin name? Is that like Kenny Loggin?

But I think pre-conceptive slush is something akin to troll, until one can prove themselves otherwise.

It also helps to place a thread in the Introductions forum and give us a clue as to your interest.

You can state, then and there, that you're only interested in spreading the gospel of this sport.

The real game is played with four quarters of competition. In the regular version of the game, a goal is worth three points.

Move the game into mach speed:
For the more advanced team net players, the game would include the two point ace, the two point backcourt kee, and two point optional xunk serve.

Volleyball use to be a sport where a ball had to be served over the net in order for a team to score a point. Now a team can earn a point when the ball is served under the net? Volleyball use to be a sport where a team had to serve a ball over the net in order to win a set or game. Now a team can win a set or game without being challenged to play off the serve???

Dear Mr. Feger.

The Rules have changed considerably from the time you are refering to. You can access the Rules on our website to study those changes here: http://www.fivb.ch/EN/Volleyball/Rules/Rules.htm The sport of Volleyball has changed and the game has also developed and our changes have proven to be very succesful with the new Rally Point Scoring system.

Yes, I know.... How has earning points off every bad serve improved the game? These are the kind of rules found in sports like table tennis. I really don't think a volleyball court is the right venue for this kind of scoring system. And, serving the ball to win set or game is, or was a very significant feature of volleyball's side-out system. Penalty point serve isn't a new concept in this kind of team net sport. However, it should be used conservately and not on any serve. There is no reason this sport can't adopt a form of offensive and defensive scoring without taking away the service team's game advantage. When the service team has scoring advantage, it defines a team's playing situation as either offensive (service) or defensive (receiving). Volleyball is a game where the service team has the scoring advantage and the receiving team works against the score for the advantages of the serve. This is volleyball's balance of challenges and it is unique.

I think you went to far in the direction of adopting the rallypoint scoring system as it is now practiced. And, although it makes scoring a game easier it under cuts the competitive spirit of this kind of team net sport. Put the spirit back.........

best regards.....Jim Feger

Dear Mr. Feger.

I understand your comments but I do not approve with your ideas in this area after having being a player for over 20 years and playing in both systems. First of all to exlplain to you. The RPS system was meant to shorten the games for TV and cut out long rallies of sideout scoring and to make more excitement to the game. Our studies have shown that with the Libero the offensive got better and we have many spectacular rallies. The cases you are refering to are very unlikely to happen.

Thank you however for your input.

Dear Mr. Thorsteinsson

After sending my last message, I realized you probably were not affiliated with the FIVB when I first introduced our then version of offensive and defensive scoring. However, we have been developing these kind of competitive features in a team net sport since 1979. In 1993 and in 1994 we were televised by the CNN World Report Internationally. In late 1994, the FIVB started developing what is now a version of offensive and defensive scoring called rallypoint. I have never consider the FIVB's adoption of rallypoint scoring a coincedental occurrance. However, as it turned out the FIVB has ventured off in one direction, while we have developed our own system. A system of offensive and defensive scoring that preceeds that which is now in operation by the FIVB. In the process we were the first to develope hitting and kicking, multiple point scoring, backcourt scoring, vertical areas of play, penalty point serves, and have implemented a side-out scoring system similiar to rallypoint scoring without penalizing every serve and service team has the game advantage of closure. These systems of play are not merely ideas but are actually in use as a annual sporting event out here in Micronesia. This year is our 21st annual season of Rocball.....The following, if you care to read on is a general dscription of how we work through a complete game and the reason why we adopted this system.

A Volley & Rally Game

Set Point Features:

In a team net sport with multiple point scoring in an offensive and defensive scoring system, the task either team is challenged with, defines their competitive identity. The team with the serve is in the offensive position. The team receiving the serve is in a defensive situation. The offensive team has the scoring and game playing advantage. In addition to volleyball's traditional side-out system of scoring points (volley points), the offensive team has more different plays in which to earn multiple point scores. Furthermore, the offensive team has "exclusive closure". A set or game cannot be won under conditions of defensive scoring (rally points). Teams will not win a set or game if they do not serve for the set or game's winning point.

The defensive team works against the offensive team's game playing advantages, for the control of the offensive team's competitive conditions of play. In general terms, the rules for defensive scoring is also based on volleyball's traditional side-out scoring system.

Set point is fluid: In an offensive and defensive, multiple point scoring team net game, set point is fluid. In order to win a set, the offensive team must be at or over set point when it serves. If a set of play is designated at 20 points, the offensive team must have 19 or more points to win a set. If the offensive team is at 18 points and scores a 2 point play off the serve or during volley, the offensive team will then have 20 points and their next serve will be for set point.

In situations where the defensive team has scored beyond the set point, the set point for that particular set of play is increased by the outcome of whatever rally points were scored. For example; if the offensive team has 15 points and the defensive team has 19 points, and the defensive team scores a 3 points in rally, set point is 21. In order for either team to win the set, they must prevent their opponents from scoring rally points, and have the serve with 21 points.

And, because set point is fluid, winning a set by a predetermined margin of points would be redundant and unnecessary. A set is won or lost by the total number of volley and rally points either team has scored. This is the system or framework under which multiple point scoring works to provide a balance of challenges in an offensive and defensive scoring team net sport.

Game Point Features:

An offensive and defensive, multiple point scoring game is played under a quarter/set system. The quarter/set system of play was developed by combining and modifying two different methods of measuring game time. The clock system in which teams win by totaled points scored in a specific amount of time. And, the set system of play where the winner of a game is based on the amount time it takes to win a certain number of sets.

In an offensive and defensive scoring game, the serve is the catalyst that precipitates competitive action. The serve characterizes possession, offensive identity, control, and the position of advantage. The serve is what starts the competitive action to begin a game and it is the process in which the beginning of the end of competition is completed. After the serve, the competitive nature of a team net sport game with offensive and defensive scoring is customed to quick, erratic, and unpredictable sequences of activity. This makes it a difficult, if not awkward, task of organizing a game under the rules of a clocked system of play. However, their are features of a clocked system of play that can be incorporated into an offensive and defensive scoring team net sport.

In a sport where a game is divided by quarters of play and organized by the clock, the points a team scores, is measured against the expiration time of each quarter and the game. The team that scores the most points within the limits and definitions of playing time, will win a regular game of play.

One of the advantages of a sport that is organized under the clocked system, is that certain plays, offensive and defensive strategies, team signals...etc, can be worked out before competition begins. This is done to manipulate or take advantage of the known and measurable limitations of game time. These are some of the mechanics of a clocked game and it works well where a team wins by total points scored. The difference between team scores at any one point of a clocked game, is a measure of a team's success. What this does, is it creates an atmosphere of sustained anxiety and anticipation from the time the game begins until it is finished.

However, there are disadvantages to the clocked game that need to be avoided. Sports organized under the clocked system of play, have one common weak trait, the lopsided score. A game can, for all practical purposes, be finished in three quarters of play or less. In a clocked sport, if by the end of the third quarter, the difference between team scores is so much that there is no sensible or sensational competitive action or series of competitive actions that will alter or change its unavoidable conclusion, the game implodes and becomes an anticlimactic experience.

In a sport where a game is organized by sets, a team's playing time is measured against how long it takes to play for a fixed number of points per set, for a majority of a designated number of sets. The team that wins each set by a certain difference between scores and wins the majority of a designated number of sets, wins the game. However, in sports where sets determine the winners or losers of a game, a team can actually outscore their opponents in total points and still lose the game.

A quarter/set system of play has been developed to counterpoise the pitfalls under which the present and traditional methods of both the clock and set system were organized. In the quarter/set system of play, the points a team scored in each of the four sets is recorded and totaled at the end of the fourth set. The importance of calculating the total scores, is that they are significant references that best characterizes sorts of predictable outcome, definitive moments, and conclusive strategies. The quarter/set system of play has an irreversible measurement of action parallel to that of sports organized by timed intervals of play. However, in a team net sport where competition could start and stop off a bad serve, or end in two hits and three seconds of play, there is a different momentum and course of expectations to be taken under consideration.

The mechanics of a quarter/set system game have been worked-out so that a team's success can be measured by how many points it scored in each set, the total points it scored in a game, and how the fourth set is played. In a quarter/set system of play, a team cannot win a game in a losing set and a team cannot win a game if they haven't outscored their opponents. In the quarter/set system of play, a team must outscore its opponent's after four sets of play by at least three points and win the fourth set in order to "Juice Out", win the game. This is the combination of circumstances and the method under which the elements of quarter/set system of play functions, maintains, and provides competitive interest from the beginning to the end of a game. And, if neither team juices out, the game goes into overtime.

Overtime Features:

In an overtime system of play in a team net sport with goals at either end of the court, it is the first team that either scores 10 points or a goal, that wins the set and/or game. When a goal is not scored, only the offensive team, the team with the serve wins the set. However, whichever team can score a goal before the 10 point overtime set is completed, regardles of the point differences between teams will win the set or game. The team that had the most points scored at the end of the quarter/set system of play where neither team juiced out, would only need to win one overtime set. The team team that scored the least amount of points at the end of a quarter/set system of play where neither team juiced out, would need to win two overtime sets of play.

The quarter/set system of play was developed for Rocball. Rocball is the first team net sport ever developed that incorporated hitting and kicking, offensive and defensive scoring, backcourt scoring, multiple point scoring, penalty point, and vertical areas of play. Rocball is a game derivative of volleyball with its roots of play founded in the Pre-Columbian, Meso-American sport of Tlatchli.

Yamada regains top hitter's spot & Lagooners "Juice Out"

By Shan Seman
Reporter: Saipan Tribune

Friday, January 13, 2006

After a month-long break, action in the World Organized Rocball High School League resumed at the Marianas High School Gymnasium, with the Lagooners showing no signs of rust with a convincing victory over Just For Fun yesterday.

The Lagooners played well and won three of the four sets, including the fourth set that enabled them to juice out with a 58-36 win. The win is the fourth in six games for the Lagooners, who currently sit in third place in the team standings, only behind defending champion Mwaliyas and Ochobu.

The match got underway on Wednesday, with the Lagooners taking the early advantage via power hitting and miscues by Just For Fun at the service line. The Lagooners also had problems from behind the service line, which erased two points from their score at the start of the set, but recovered, serve well from then on, and scored six two-pointers to streak to a 15-8 win.

Unfortunately for Just For Fun, the Lagooners were just getting started as Tito Francisco and company continued to pound the ball with their might and dominated the second set. With everything going their way, the Lagooners moved into solid position with a 16-6 win, increasing their lead in the overall point tally to 17 points, 31-14.
Just For Fun finally put up a strong fight in the third set, which was interrupted after time expired.

The two teams returned yesterday and Just For Fun turned the tables as the team stunned the Lagooners with a stronger charge and took the set, 16-11, cutting the deficit to 12 points, 30-42.

Determined to pull their record to the .500 mark, Just For Fun tried to win the fourth set and send the match into o-kon, however, it did not have enough juice to pull off the feat as the Lagooners returned to their dominating ways and sealed the deal with a 16-6 clincher.

Tito Francisco and Typhoon Saito were hot all match long and finished as co-heavy hitters for the game by leading the Lagooners with 14 points apiece. Francisco had two aces, two xunks, and three kees, while Saito worked up a whopping seven aces and a kee.

Anirut Tebuteb led Just For Fun with six points on two aces and a kee.

Rocball action returns on Tuesday as Ochobu and Caropinos close out round six of the regular season. Ochobu looks to move just a game behind Mwaliyas in the pennant race with a 4-1 record, while the Caropinos are aiming for their first win of the season.

Meanwhile, Rocball creator Jim Feger disclosed that Shane Yamada of Mwaliyas has regained the top spot for Rocball Heavy Hitter with a total of 79 points. The multi-sport athlete is one big reason why Mwaliyas holds a perfect 6-0 win-loss record as he has connected for a jam, an incredible 15 aces, three xunks, 12 kees, and sox goals to lead the league in scoring.

Right behind Yamada is Oleai smacker Myron Laniyo of B-n-S, who trails by a mere two points in the scoring race. Laniyo has a jam, 13 aces, two xunks, a goal, and has smoked up 20 kees for 77 points.

The race expects to get tighter as Yamada and Laniyo both have one game remaining in the regular season.

Watch & Learn too much for Da Lani Kynez:wink:

By Shan Seman
Reporter / Saipan Tribune

Watch & Learn was simply too much for Da Lani Kynez to handle yesterday in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League.

Watch & Learn, which comprises of Marianas High School staff, took three of the four sets, including the final set of regulation to juice out and win, 57-43, at the school's gymnasium.

With the win, Watch & Learn remains one of the two undefeated teams in the league and ties defending champion Mwaliyas atop the team standings. Both teams have perfect 5-0 win-loss cards.

Da Lani Kynez got off to a cold start and Watch & Learn took advantage. The teachers had good placement on their shots and got some help from Da Lani Kynez courtesy of a mishap on first serve. With things going their way, Watch & Learn was easily able to take the first set, 15-5.

The Da Lani Kynez players showed they weren't going to be manhandled and returned the favor in the second set. The team sizzled in the early goings and broke out to an 11-1 lead before closing the set strong for a 16-9 victory.

Watch & Learn, however, still held the upper hand as the team led the overall points tally, 24-21.

The overall spread got wider after the third set as Watch & Learn returned to solid form. The team opened with a 9-2 run, then got a big blast from Tyce Mister, who gave them a 12-2 lead after connecting for a goal. Da Lani Kynez fought back, but was not able to complete a comeback as Watch & Learn took the set, 17-8.

With that, Watch & Learn's overall lead went up to 12 points, 41-29.

Da Lani Kynez needed to win the fourth set to force o-kon-overtime in Rocball, and seemed to have had a chance.

After letting Watch & Learn take an 11-5 lead, Da Lani Kynez surged back, going on a big run to tie the game at 15-15. The team also had serve and could've won the set with a point, but failed to convert on the opportunity. Shortly after, Da Lani Kynez watched Watch & Learn close the set and take the match.

 Mister led Watch & Learn with 15 points after smashing six kees and a goal, while Mark McDonald had 12 points on six kees.

 Myron Laniyo finished as the game's heavy hitter after leading Da Lani Kynez with 18 points on nine kees.

Mwaliyas cruise to back-to-back victories

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

THE Mwaliyas strengthened their semifinals chances in the World Organized Rocball Community League after beating Kich Fairo in four sets, 58-39, last Friday at the Marianas High School Gym.

The win improved the Mwaliyas record in the second round to 2-0. They won their opening game against Da Lani Kynez.

Kich Fairo dropped to a 0-2 slate and needs to sweep its remaining matches to have a chance in the next round.

The six teams that advanced to the second round will play only five games each. After the second round, the top four teams will move into the crossover semifinals, which will have a best-of-three format.

The Mwaliyas, who are hoping to defend their title this season, picked up where they left off winning the third and fourth sets of the match.

The remaining part of the third set was played last Friday with the Mwaliyas’ Shane Yamada serving and the defending champions leading at 12-1.

The Mwaliyas scored five more points to notch a 17-7 triumph in the third set.
Entering the fourth set, Kich Fairo was pressed to win to send the game into overtime. But the Mwaliyas had no plans to extend the match, as they posted a 16-6 victory to end the game.

The first two sets of the Mwaliyas-Kich Fairo tiff were played last Thursday. Kich Fairo drew first blood, 15-10, but failed to sustain its momentum losing the second set, 11-15.

 Yamada led the Mwaliyas’ win scoring 17 points on five kees, one xunx, one ace and a goal.

Three goals were scored in the game and all were from Mwaliyas players with Graceful Fiden drilling one in the latter part of the third set. Yamada and Valentine Taisacan notched a goal apiece in the fourth set.

Eight aces, five xunxs and nine kees were scored in the game.

Dublon Chiefs outwit Black Magic in rocball

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

THE Dublon Chiefs entered the win column in the second round of the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym. The Dublon Chiefs swept all four sets of their match against Black Magic for a 64-31 juiced-out victory.

With the win, the Dublon Chiefs improved to a 1-1 record. They lost their debut match against Watch & Learn last week. Black Magic won its first game against Kich Fairo, 61-43, before bowing to the Dublon Chiefs.

The Dublon Chiefs were off to a rousing start winning the first set by 14, 16-2.Black Magic gave the Dublon Chiefs a good fight in the second set, but the latter stood its ground and hung on to a 15-13 triumph.

The Dublon Chiefs made it three in a row with a 16-6 victory in the third set. With the Dublon Chiefs sweeping the first three sets of the game, Black Magic had to win the fourth set to extend the match in overtime. But that scenario failed to materialize, as the Dublon Chiefs ended the game with a 16-10 win in the fouth set.

 JR Rudolph topscored for the Dublon Chiefs with seven points on two xunxs and a goal.

Four goals were scored in the game with the Dublon Chiefs’ Ichnis Kapwich and Orig Toan and Black Magic’s Elly Apilis drilling one apiece.

Black Magic spell too strong for Kich Fairo

By Shan Seman
Reporter / Saipan Tribune

Black Magic was just too strong for Kich Fairo and broke over the .500 mark behind an impressive victory yesterday as action in the world Organized Rocball Community League continued at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Entering yesterday's session with a slim 28-22 lead, Black Magic was able to slowly increase the advantage in the third set, then blew away the competition in the fourth set for a 61-43 victory.

With the win, Black Magic improves its win-loss record to 3-2, while the loss was Kich Fairo's third in four games.

As reported in yesterday's edition, Black Magic was holding a 6-3 lead in the third set when time expired. When action resumed, Black Magic kept a firm hold on its slim lead and was able to close the set with a 16-12 win to increase the overall lead to 10 points, 44-34.

Despite trailing by 10, the Kich Fairo players knew they still had a chance since in Rocball, the team leading heading into the fourth set must win the set to close the match. If Kich Fairo wins the set and also overcomes the 10-point deficit in the overall tally, they will also win the match.:frown:

At first, it seemed Kich Fairo was going pull off the stunner. With Zerolyn Fiden at the service line, the team was able to open with a 6-0 run.

Black Magic, however, was not ready to give the win away. The team calmly clawed back and held the opposition to just three points the rest of the way for a 17-9 clincher.

Black Magic took the first set, 15-7, despite a goal by Kich Fairo's Typhoon Saito. Kich Fairo came back in the second set and won, 15-13.

 Joe Taitano was the game's heavy hitter with nine points after connecting for three aces, a xunk, and a jam, while Saito led Kich Fairo with five points on a kee and a goal.

All teams will face each other once before the semifinals cast is determined. Teams advancing to the Final Four will then battle in best-of-three series, with the two victorious teams scoring slots in the championship series.

SHOUT-OUT to ROB and Taylor & Wisconsin Rocball of Catholic Memorial High School

Meanwhile, sport creator Jim Feger disclosed yesterday that Rocball continues to attract interest around the world. Two juniors, Rob Petrie and Taylor Braun, currently enrolled at Catholic Memorial High School in Brookfield, Wisconsin were recently recipients of the official World Organized Rocball T-shirt.

Both have indicated to Feger that they've received positive feedback from other students regarding the shirts and the sport.

Da Lani Kynez, Kich Fairo in tough battle

"The Serve"

By Shan Seman
Reporter / Saipan Tribune

Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo are in the middle of a very tough battle as both teams put up solid efforts yesterday in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Da Lani Kynez leads by a slim margin after taking two of the three sets played, 39-35.

Da Lani Kynez got a huge boost from Alex Laniyo, who sparked the team from the opening serve as he connected for a xunk, followed by an ace and a goal while at the service area to give his team an early 7-0 lead in the first set.

Kich Fairo finally got on the scoreboard as Tom Malone smashed a goal, but the team was not able to close the gap as Da Lani Kynez continued to push hard for a 15-8 win.

With that, Da Lani Kynez headed into the third set with a comfortable 30-16 lead in the overall points tally.

Just when it seemed Kich Fairo was heading in the wrong road, the team came up with big hits to swing momentum to their corner in the third set. After converting on kill opportunities, Kich Fairo was able to open the set with a 6-2 run. Dean Mathew then connected on consecutive aces.

Da Lani Kynez got a big hit from Myron Laniyo, who connected for a xunk. He opted to add points to his team's corner, resulting in his team cutting their deficit to three points, 9-12.

After Da Lani Kynez lost serve, Typhoon Saito stepped up for Kich Fairo. The determined competitor served up a goal for a 16-9 lead, then closed the set strong with another goal from the service line to give his team a 19-9 victory.

Laniyo brothers Alex and Myron currently lead the scoring with Alex recording 15 points on two aces, a xunk, a kee, and a goal, and Myron connecting for four aces, two xunks, and a kee for 14 points.

Saito and Mathew have eight points apiece to lead Kich Fairo, with Saito knocking in an ace and two goals and Mathew pounding away for three aces and a kee. Malone also has seven points on an ace, a kee, and a goal.

Da Lani Kynez survives tough battle

By Shan Seman
Reporter / Saipan Tribune

As reported yesterday, Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo were neck and neck in their bout in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League.

The two completed the first three sets of play on Wednesday with Da Lani Kynez leading, 39-35, and returned to the Marianas High School Gymnasium yesterday finish off their contest.

Kich Fairo was already leading the fourth set, 5-4, when action was halted on Wednesday, but the team was not able to increase the lead and watched Da Lani Kynez steam ahead for a 56-44 juice out victory.

Despite playing with only three players yesterday, Da Lani Kynez was able to control what remained of the fourth set and clinched the victory by winning the set, 17-9.

With only Myron Laniyo, Stephanie Arnold, and Kaleo Olaitiman suiting up for Da Lani Kynez, Kich Fairo was presented with the golden opportunity of easily taking the set.

That wasn't the case, though, as Laniyo, Arnold, and Olaitiman held their ground and shocked all in attendance. Laniyo was able to connect on a big goal, pounded the ball for another three aces, a xunk, and two kees in the set to push his team ahead.

 Laniyo's heroics came at the right time, and he wound up finishing as the game's heavy hitter with a whopping 29 points. The veteran Rocball player closed the match with seven aces, three xunks, three kees, and a goal.

Da Lani Kynez took the first two sets, winning both with scores of 15-8. Alex Laniyo ignited the run in the opening set as he connected for a xunk, followed by an ace and a goal while at the service area to give his team an early 7-0 lead in the first set.

Kich Fairo finally got on the scoreboard on a goal by Tom Malone, but was not able to close in, resulting Da Lani Kynez winning.

Da Lani Kynez controlled the second set with Myron Laniyo nailing three aces and a xunk to put his team in front. The team held on behind their solid play for the win.

With that, Da Lani Kynez headed into the third set with a comfortable 30-16 lead in the overall points tally.

Kich Fairo came back in the third set, opening with a 6-2 run.

Alex Laniyo assisted Myron with 15 points on two aces, a xunk, a kee, and a goal.

Mathew and Saito led Kich Fairo with eight points apiece, with Mathew hitting three aces and a kee, and Saito smacking an ace and two goals:rolleyes:

Rocball

Rocball is a non-contact team net game derivative of volleyball and a Meso-American sport once played by the athletes of the Aztec civilization of what is now the country of Mexico. Rocball has existed since 1979.

Rules of the Sport:
Rocball is played on a rectangular court bisected by an overhead net with goals located behind each end of the court.

The offensive team has the scoring advantage because of service and court points. However, either team has the opportunity to score from one to three points during any one play; under certain conditions, the defensive team can score one point plays, the server can score different types of two point plays, the goalies of either team can score two points, any player from either team can score a three point goal, and there are different way to win a set of play.

It is the first team net sport to implement offensive and defensive scoring, multiple point plays, plays in which a team can lose point, and the first team net sport to include the combination of kicking and hitting play action.

Black Magic threatens Watch & Learn

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

UNDEFEATED Watch & Learn was having problems thwarting Black Magic after three sets in their second round game in the of the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

After three sets, Watch & Learn, which swept its games in the first round and had two easy juiced-out wins in the second, was leading Black Magic by only one, 42-41.

The first set was a neck-and-neck battle with Watch & Learn winning by only two, 15-13.

Watch & Learn notched its second straight victory after prevailing in the second set, 17-11.

But Black Magic was threatening to hand Watch & Learn its first loss in the tournament after nailing a 17-10 triumph in the third set and moving within a hair.

The game was halted, as students needed to return to class. The match resumes today.

If Black Magic wins the fourth set and holds the lead at the end of the game, it will complete a come-from-behind victory.

If Black Magic prevails in the fourth, but Watch & Learn still has the lead, the match will go into overtime with the former needing to win two sets and the latter needing only one.

Mark McDonald was leading Watch & Learn with 16 points on seven kees and one ace.

So far, 11 aces, two xunxs, 14 kees and one goal have been scored in the game

Black Magic’s Ryan Lisua drilled the lone goal so far in the match. He did it in the second set.

A win will strengthen Watch & Learn’s chances for a semis spot.
It currently shares the No. 1 spot with the defending champions Mwaliyas which has an identical 2-0 record.

Black Magic is tied with the Dublon Chiefs in second place with a 1-1 slate. Kich Fairo and Da Lani Kynez are both winless in two matches.

Only the top four teams after the second round will move into the semifinals, which will be a best-of-three-games affair. The finals will have a best-of-five format

A WOR Rule of Engagement:

Rocball (volleyball/soccer) is not a sport where time determines when scoring points are completed. This is a sport where scoring points ends the time of play.

Rocball’s quarter/set system is based on game points added up from four sets of play.

After the first set of play, a team’s game point and set point are the same. To start the second set, team’s start out even, zero to zero.

After the second set, a team’s game point will have increased by the amount of points a team scored upon completion of the second set.

Teams start at zero to zero for the third set and increase their game point when the third set of play has finished.

And, teams start at zero to zero for the fourth set, increase their game point at the end of the fourth set, and complete the quarter/set system of play.

However, a team must win the fourth set and have the most game points scored, to win a game at the completion of four sets of play. If a team wins the fourth set of play with the most game points scored, it wins the game: “Juices-Out”.

Consequences:

Situation “A”… A quarter/set system of play is not finished, if a team loses the fourth set with more game points scored than its opponent.

Situation “B”… A quarter/set system of play is not finished, if a team wins the fourth set with less game points scored than its opponents.

In a game where the quarter/set system of play ends in either situation “A” or “B”, the game goes into overtime/overkill of which in Rocball jargon is called O-kon.:frown:

The team that lost the fourth set with the most game points scored, has to win one O-kon set to win the game. The team that won the fourth set with the lowest game points scored, has to win two O-kon sets to win the game..

An O-kon set of play is ten points or a goal, whichever is scored first. If a goal isn’t scored, the rule for winning an O-kon set is the same as in a regular set of play, an O-kon set of play can only be won by a team with the serve.

Watch & Learn maintains perfect record in rocball

Variety News Staff

WHAT was expected to be a down-to-the-wire finish ended in an easy victory for Watch & Learn, which notched a 57-46 juiced out win against Black Magic in the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

Watch & Learn was leading by only one, 42-41, after three sets and was in danger of absorbing its first loss in the tournament following Black Magic’s impressive 17-10 victory in the third set.

The first three sets of their match were played last Monday with Watch & Learn prevailing in the opening set by only two points, 15-13.
Watch & Learn won anew in the second set, 17-11, before Black Magic found enough tricks in the third to post a seven-point triumph.
The victory in the third set gave Black Magic a strong chance to pull off an upset against the undefeated Watch & Learn.

But when the match resumed yesterday for the crucial fourth set, Watch & Learn regained its bearings and nailed an emphatic 16-4 win to wrap up the match and end Black Magic’s upset bid.

With the win, Watch & Learn improved to a 3-0 record in the second round and is assured of a slot in the semifinals.
Black Magic dropped to a 1-2 record and must sweep its last two matches to boost its chances to advance to the next round.

Only the top four teams after the round-robin second round will gain entry to the semifinals, which will have a best-of-three games format.
Six teams are fighting for the four semis berths. Aside from Watch & Learn, the defending champion Mwaliyas are the other undefeated squad in the second round with a 2-0 slate.

The Dublon Chiefs have a 1-1 record, while Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo hold identical 0-2 marks.:frown:

Mark McDonald led Watch & Learn’s third win firing 20 points on eight kees, one xunx and an ace.

Ryan Lisua was Black Magic’s heavy hitter with seven points on two kees and a goal.

Dublon Chiefs take lead over Mwaliyas

By Brad E. Ruszala
Reporter / Saipan Tribune

The Dublon Chiefs cruised to a two-set lead over Mwaliyas yesterday and already doubled up on the competition in the fourth set during World Organized Rocball Community League action at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

David Tisa repeatedly made his presence known by serving up a pair of aces, while strong-armed fireballer Ichnis Kapwich had three early into the competition to make up nearly half his their team's seven team aces.

Orig Toun had a xunk and Tarness Kapwich had a kee to help the Chiefs claw a step above the .500 line on the season, but the club is still looking at a 1-1 slide on the season. Mwaliyas, on the other hand, is in danger of losing its first contest of the season after jumping out to a flawless 2-0 start.

The Chiefs opened up the competition with a one-sided 15-8 win in the first set, but got spanked in the second, 15-3, when Mwaliyas rallied with a non-stop display of power at the Home of the Dolphins.

That was all of the pounding that the experienced Chiefs could stand as they broke out the tomahawks and scalped Mwaliyas, 16-5, to take a 34-28 overall advantage heading into the final set.

Mwaliyas can still pull out a win but the squad has to dig out of a 4-2 hole that they dug before the sirens alarmed the end of the midday session.

THE Mwaliyas survived the Dublon Chiefs’ threat escaping with a 45-40 juiced out win in the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym. The Dublon Chiefs took the opening set with a 15-8 victory, before the Mwaliyas recovered in the second with a 15-3 triumph.

After losing the third set and feeling the danger of absorbing their first loss in the tournament, the Mwaliyas recovered strong in the crucial fourth set notching a 17-6 win.

 Shane Yamada and Denri Fiden teamed up in the Mwaliyas’ comeback, as the former nailed two aces and two kees and the latter capped their come-from-behind win with a goal in the fourth set.Yamada topscored for the Mwaliyas with 10 points on three kees on two aces.

WOR'S Course of Action
The five hit rule of play:eek:

"ok so lemme see if i get this:"

"Team A serves:
team B has 2 hitst to send it back
team A then has 5 hits for the remainder of the point
team B has 3 hits for the remainder of the point?"

That's it.

It looks like you have the general rules pretty much down.

Sets are 15 points….If a team wins the fourth set and whatever their scores were for all the sets is more than their opponents, they juice out, they win the game.

If a team loses the fourth set, they cannot juice out. The game goes into overtime, Okon.

You have the five hit rule down correctly:smile:

Things to remember:
If the first serve of a player in the server’s position is bad, his/her team loses one point and the serve. If a team hasn’t scored any points and make a bad first serve, then their opponent’s receive one point and the serve.

You can only call set point when a team has scored 14 or more points.

Example: Team A has 13 points and the serve. If the server scores an ace, add the amount to the score 13 and then call set point at 15.

Only a team in service can close out a regular set of play. I have had set point readjusted many times because the receiving team scores off the service team’s call for set.

There is no two point margin of play to win a set or game. You don’t need it because it is a multiple point scoring game and only the service team can close out a set.

Question ::smile:
Do you have any video of a Rocball game?

Are there any short court rocball rules? A lot of beach volleyball is on the 8x16m courts now.. would that be suitable for a doubles rocball game?

Answere
I’m not sure how well a two person team would work out. We have a minimum 3 person team rule because of the goals located 10 feet behind each court. And, the person playing the goalie would have to double up as the server also.

The short court in your description, is about 26 feet wide and 52 feet long. It would still be a very competitive venue for Rocball. The goals would, proportionately, cover a wider area behind each court.

A few basic things to work out are:

1. Except for the first serve of a player rotating into the serve/goalie position, the game is played by side-out rules. Only the service team has closure and there is no two point margin used to complete a set or game.

2. There is the “5 hit” rule for play.

3. Use the “quarter/set” system to win sets and game.

4. This is an offensive and defensive scoring game; both service and receiving team can score off the serve and during volley.
a...One point for court scoring by either team
b...two points for an ace
c...two points for backcourt scoring by the goalie of either team.
d...three points for a goal by either team

I don't have any Rocball videos unless the school's film class does a project on Rocball this year, as they have offered. And, there are collapsable, aluminum indoor soccer goals: Flaghouse or Gopher Sport's equipment magazine:cool:

Da Lani Kynez boosts chances for first win

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

DA Lani Kynez strengthened its chances to enter the win column in the second round of the World Organized Rocball Community League after leading Black Magic in yesterday’s game at the Marianas High School Gym.

Da Lani Kynez was ahead by four, 46-42, midway through the fourth set before the match was temporarily stopped, as students needed to return to class.

Holding a 0-2 record in the second round, Da Lani Kynez must sweep its last three games to move into the semifinals.

Da Lani Kynez began its difficult mission with a 16-9 victory in the opening set. But it failed to notch back-to-back sets win after Black Magic regained its bearings and cruised to a 14-5 triumph.

It was Da Lani Kynez’ turn to bounce back in the third set drilling a 16-9 victory.

Only half of the fourth set was played yesterday with Da Lani Kynez holding on to a precarious one-point margin, 9-8.

The match resumes today with Black Magic’s Ryan Lisua serving. If
Da Lani Kynez wins the fourth set and still has the lead at the end of regulation, it will claim a "juiced-out" victory and improve to a 1-2 record.

If it loses, but hangs on to the lead, the game will go into overtime with Da Lani Kynez needing only one set win to end the match. If Black Magic wins the fourth set with less game points scored than Da Lani Kynes, it must prevail twice in the extension period to steal the victory.

Black Magic is holding a 1-1 record and also needs the victory to boost its chances for the semifinals.

Only the top four teams after the round-robin second round will move to the semis. So far, only the undefeated Mwaliyas and Watch & Learn, which have identical 3-0 records, are assured of slots in the next round. The Dublon Chiefs have a 1-2 record, while Kich Fairo has a 0-2 slate.

Black Magic had a chance to claim the victory in the fourth set, but muffed it when it failed to convert on its serve.:frown:

Watch & Learn boosts bid to keep record clean

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

 WATCH & Learn was enjoying the battle of undefeated teams in the second round of the World Organized Rocball Community League as it was leading the Mwaliyas after two and a half sets yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

Watch & Learn was ahead by seven, 32-25, midway through the third set, when the game was stopped temporarily, as students needed to return to class.

Both teams reported to the game yesterday with a 3-0 record with Watch & Learn having a good chance to keep its unbeaten record, as the Mwaliyas struggled with their first serves.

The Mwaliyas lost a lot of points due to bad first serves:
According to league coordinator James Feger, in rocball, when a team wins the serve to start the game or earns the serve off a point, the first serve has to be good or the serving team loses a point, the serve, and the scoring advantage.

With the defending champions failing to connect on their first subsequent serves, Watch & Learn notched an easy 15-1 victory in the first set.

The Mwaliyas regained their composure in the second set en route to a 16-9 win.

The third set was a neck-and-neck battle and when the match was halted, Watch & Learn and the Mwaliyas were in a deadlock at 8-all.

The match resumes today with Watch & Learn’s Mark McDonald serving. Three aces, one xunx, one goal and 12 kees have been scored so far in the game. Gary Phillip drilled the loan goal so far in the match nailing it in the second set.

Yamada lifts Mwaliyas to comeback win

Shane Yamada helped keep Mwaliyas' record clean in the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Mwaliyas scored a 52-48 come-from-behind win over Watch & Learn in a battle of undefeated teams.

After four sets and a day and a half later, Mwaliyas found themselves alone at the top spot with an immaculate 4-0 record. Mwaliyas and Watch & Learn entered the game with similar 3-0 slates.
Yamada was instrumental for the win as he ended the game with a kee.

With the score tied at 13-all, both teams exchanged match point service twice before Mwaliyas got the serve advantage back and Yamada completing his end-game heroics with a kee.

Yamada finished with six kees in the entire match.

Mwaliyas was holding on to a 10-0 lead in the last set but let Watch & Learn comeback in the game with a 13-3 exchange.

Mwaliyas trailed for most part of the match with Watch & Learn controlling the game in the first three sets of play.

Watch & Learn dictated the tempo of the match scoring 15 points while limiting their opponents to one in the opening set.

They even held on to a 24-17 halftime advantage with Mwaliyas having trouble with their penalty points because of bad serves.

Tyce Mister led Watch & Learns losing cause with two aces, a xunk, and a kee.

A total of 15 kees, five aces, two xunks, and a goal were made by the two teams in the entire match.

In Rocball, the first ensuing serve of play has to be good if you are the team that earned service. An error will cause the team to lose a point, service, and scoring advantage.

Dublon Chiefs lead Kich Fairo

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

THE Dublon Chiefs recovered from an opening set loss and stole the lead from Kich Fairo after two and half sets of their match in the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

The Dublon Chiefs were leading, 40-30, midway in the third set when the game was temporarily stopped as students needed to return to class.
After a 13-17 loss to Kich Fairo in the first set, the Dublon Chiefs regained their bearings notching a 17-7 victory in the second for a 30-24 advantage.

The lead increased to 10, as the Dublon Chiefs were leading 10-6 in the third set, before the match was halted.

Both teams need to win to keep their semifinals chances alive.
The Dublon Chiefs have a 1-2 record and share third place with Black Magic and Da Lani Kynez.

Kich Fairo is winless in two games and if it loses anew, it can kiss its semis bid goodbye.

Only the undefeated Mwaliyas (4-0) and Watch & Learn (3-1) are assured of tickets in Final Four.

The playoff round is expected to be completed this week, as the six participating teams will play only five games in the second round. The top four teams after the second round will advance to the best-of-three games semifinals.

What to Choose, Serve or Receive

What kind of service rules are there to choose from in this kind of team net sport? The rally point rule of serve, the side-out rule of serve, and the Rocball modified rule of side-out service.

The difference:
 Under the old side-out rule of service, the service team had scoring advantage and closure.

 frown: Under the rally point rule of service, each team can score off any kind of serve and either team has closure.

 Under volleyball/soccer (Rocball) rules of service, each team can score one or more points off a good serve, there is a penalty on a bad serve that fails to start a sequence of competitive activity, and the service team has closure.

Example of a Rocball game using the modified side-out rule of service:

First Set
Team Mwaliyas:
1-0-1-0-1…penalized on bad serve rule.

Team Watch:
1-2-3-5-7-8-9-11-12-13-14-15…no penalty serves and no unearned points.

Team Mwaliyas lost points on bad serves. The modified side-out rule of play for service is, when a team earns the serve, it has the responsibility to initiate competitive activity. If the first serve of any player that occupies or rotates into the server’s position is bad, its considered a delay of game, a penalty serve, and the service team loses one point, the serve, and the scoring advantage.

A team that loses a point off a bad serve, a penalty serve, changes the difference between team scores without awarding an unearned point to the receiving team. There is no penalty for a bad serve of any subsequent serves. If the first serve is good and the service teams scores, they serve again. If the second serve is bad, then the side-out rule of play comes into effect. The service team loses the serve, the scoring advantage, and the circumstances in which to close out or win a set or game.

The Exception::frown:
If a team hasn’t scored any points or has a zero score and commits a penalty serve, it has no points to be deducted; then, their opponents, the receiving team will be awarded one unearned point. ( a rally point)

Mwaliyas sweep second round of rocball tournamen

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

THE defending champion Mwaliyas will enter the semifinals of the World Organized Rocball Community League with an unbeaten record following their 61-34 juiced out win over Black Magic yesterday at the MHS Gym.

The Mwaliyas finished the second round with a 5-0 record, while Black Magic dropped to a 1-4 slate and is in danger of being eliminated.

With the Mwaliyas sweeping the regular season and Watch & Learn holding a 4-1 slate, only two slots are left for the next round.

Black Magic will be fighting for the remaining spots with Da Lani Kynez (1-2) and the Dublon Chiefs (1-2).

The Mwaliyas, who are known for their slow starts, were lethargic as usual in the opening set, but were able to escape with a 15-14 victory with Darrel Roligat nailing his lone goal in the closing part of the first set.

The defending champions picked up the pace in the second set beating Black Magic 15-6.

Shane Yamada had two goals in the third set helping the Mwaliyas cruise to an easy 16-5 victory.

Down by 21 points at the end of the third set, 46-25, Black Magic needed to win in the fourth set to force an overtime. But the Mwaliyas had other plans and it did not include playing extended minutes, as the defending champions ended the match early with a 15-9 win. >:(

 Roligat was the game’s heavy hitter with 11 points on one goal, two aces, one xunx and a kee. Yamada chipped in 10 markers on two goals, a xunx and an ace.

Eight aces, three xunxs, six kees and four goals were scored in the game.
Black Magic’s John Nekaifes drilled the other goal in the game making it in the opening set.

Watch & Learn clobbers Kich Fairo

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

WATCH & Learn denied Kich Fairo a decent finish in the second round of the World Organized Rocball Community League, as the former claimed a 67-27 juiced out win yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

Kich Fairo bowed out of competition winless in five games, while Watch & Learn will enter the semifinals seeded second with a 4-1 record. The defending champion Mwaliyas are seeded first with a perfect 5-0 slate.

Kich Fairo had a chance to extend the game in overtime and notch its first win in the second round when it led by four, 15-11, at the closing part of the fourth set.

But Watch & Learn recovered with Tyce Mister nailing an ace to win the fourth set, 17-15.

Watch & Learn took the first set convincingly winning by 13, 17-4. The No. 2 team won back-to-back sets when it posted an 18-5 triumph in the second set.

Kich Fairo had its worst game in the third set, as it only scored three points, while Watch & Learn had 15.

 Mister was the game’s heavy hitter scoring 20 points on five kees, three aces and two xunxs.
Mark McDonald added 19 markers on seven kees, one ace and one goal.

Two goals were scored in the game with JR Hardman of Kich Fairo drilling the other one in the fourth set.

Eight aces, three xunx, 16 kees and 2 goals were scored in the game.

Only one match is left before the tournament starts its playoffs next week.

Da Lani Kynez (2-2) and the Dublon Chiefs (2-2) meet today to determine the final position of the last two semifinalists. The winner of the match will be seeded third in the semis and will face Watch & Learn, while the loser will square off with the Mwaliyas.

The semifinals will be a best-of-three games affair, while the championship series will have a best-of-five matches format.

THE Dublon Chiefs claimed the No. 3 seeding going into the playoffs of the World Organized Rocball Community League following their 50-43 juiced-out triumph over Da Lani Kynez yesterday.

The Dublon Chiefs ended the second round of the annual tournament with a 3-2 record placing third behind the Mwaliyas (5-0) and Watch & Learn (4-1), while Da Lani Kynez finished with a 2-3 slate and slipped to the No. 4 spot.

The Dublon Chiefs drew first blood winning the opening set, 15-8.
But Da Lani Kynez recovered big in the second set, 17-5, with Myron Laniyo nailing the first goal in the game.

The Dublon Chiefs drilled back-to-back goals in the third set with Ybonn Kapwich and JR Rudolph hitting one apiece en route to a 15-10 win.

I think you are going to have to include new challenges. The sport of volleyball is played by tens of millions of people. But, it isn’t getting the TV coverage it should because of its stigma as a picnic game. :frown:

I’ve been arguing for years to get a new kind of kill factor implemented in the sport. This new attempt, and there has been numerous efforts to start a professional volleyball league, should include new competitive features.

This attempt to form a Professional Volleyball League should have unique American ingenuity. It’s an American sport. And, Americans are not afraid of change or the fight and the challenges that come with it.

But, nevertheless, and whatever......good luck:rolleyes:

Mwaliyas lead Da Lani Kynez in Rocball semis

By Jon Perez
Reporter: Saipan Tribune

 Top seed Mwaliyas are a set away from wrapping up Game 1 of their semifinal match against Da Lani Kynez. This while enjoying a comfortable 49-29 lead over their opponents at the start of the playoff round of the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Mwaliyas only need to play at the same level they did in the first three sets in order to wrap up the contest. The final set of Game 1 will be played today followed by Game 2 and, if necessary, the tiebreaker is scheduled on Monday, March 19.

On Wednesday, second seed Watch & Learn starts its own best-of-three series against the fourth-ranked Dublon Chiefs. If the Chiefs-Watch and Learn match won't finish today, they will continue with their game on Thursday and if necessary on Tuesday, March 20.

Da Lani Kynez battled Mwaliyas for every point in the first two quarters but long serves and wide returns caused them to lose their focus in the match and let Mwaliyas dictate the tempo.

The same story happened in the third where Da Lani Kynez matched the Mwaliyas' intensity and level of play before faltering again midway in the match.

With set point on their side, Gary Philip found an opening on their opponents' defense ending the match with a powerful spike that caught the frontliners of Da Lani Kynez off guard.

After three sets, Darrel Roligat was the game's heavy hitter scoring 10 points behind three kees, an ace, and a xunk.

Teammate Shane Yamada also had three kees and added an ace.

Myron Laniyo and Melvin Seman had two kees to lead Da Lani Kynez. Stephanie Arnold had one kee, ace, and xunk each.

A total of 15 kees, five aces, and three xunks have been made in the three sets they have played.

The semifinal matches will be a race-to-two-games contest with the winner advancing to the best-of-seven championship series. Both games will be played during lunch break.

In Rocball, a sport that is a cross of volleyball and football, the first ensuing serve of play has to be good if you are the team that will serve. An error will cause the team to lose a point, service, and scoring advantage:eek:

Mwaliyas need 2 o-kons in Game 1

By Jon Perez

Defending champion Mwaliyas needed two o-kons before claiming victory over Da Lani Kynez, 53-40 (2-11, 11-1), in Game 1 of their best-of-three semifinal series in the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the MHS Gymnasium.

Leading, 49-29, after three quarters, Mwaliyas let Da Lani Kynez force the first o-kon by losing the fourth set, 4-16. Da Lani Kynez played excellent defense all throughout and scored points on well-placed shots to force the first overtime.

In Rocball, the game is not yet over despite a team enjoying a huge advantage over their opponent. If the team that is trailing in the game wins the fourth set they force o-kon or overtime. :frown:

Da Lani Kynez played their usual game in the first overtime resulting to an 11-2 decision and another crack of scoring an upset against their top-ranked foe.

But Mwaliyas won't be beaten that easily and recovered their bearings in the second o-kon.

Playing their usual cohesiveness that gave them an unbeaten record in the eliminations and a big lead after three quarters, Mwaliyas came alive in the final OT to frustrate Da Lani Kynez's upset bid.

Mwaliyas went ahead early and never looked back with the whole team playing alert in defending the ball and finding holes in Da Lani Kynez's defense.

Mwaliyas held Da Lani Kynez to one point in the last o-kon and won the game after a 13-12 decision in the two OTs.

Mwaliyas' Shane Yamada and Stephanie Arnold of Da Lani Kynez were named the heavy hitters after finishing with 10 points.

 Yamada had an ace and four kees while Arnold finished with two aces, a xunk, and two kees.

A total of 22 kees, 10 aces, four xunks, and a goal were made in the entire match.

Second seed Watch & Learn starts its own best-of-three series against the fourth-ranked Dublon Chiefs today also at MHS Gym. If the Chiefs-Watch & Learn match won't finish today, they will continue with their game on Thursday.

The semifinal matches will be a race-to-two-games contest with the winner advancing to the best-of-seven championship series. Both games will be played during lunch break.

Dublon Chiefs shut out Watch & Learn in first set to lead in Game 1

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

THE other semis pairing at the World Organized Rocball Community League started its series yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym with the Dublon Chiefs and Watch & Learn splitting the first two sets and the former leading midway through the third.

The Dublon Chiefs, who are seeded third going into the playoffs, stunned Watch & Learn in the opening set of Game 1 of their semis series, with Ichnis Kapwich leading his team to a 17-0 victory.
Kapwich had four aces in the first set.

Watch & Learn put its acts together in the second set and recovered with a close 15-14 victory.

Watch & Learn picked up where it left off leading by four, 10-6, midway in the third set, which was halted, as students needed to return to class.

The game resumes today with Tarness Kapwich serving and his Dublon Chiefs leading by 12, 37-25.

If the Dublon Chiefs hang on to the lead and win the fourth set, they will take Game 1 of the best-of-three semis series and move a win away from clinching a finals berth.

 Inchnis has earned 10 points after two and a half sets, as aside from the four aces, he also had a xunx.

Mark McDonald was leading Watch & Learn with seven points on an ace, a kee and a goal. He drilled the loan goal so far in the game nailing one in the third set.

Eight aces, a xunx, two kees and a goal were scored so far in the match.

The winner of the Dublon Chiefs-Watch & Learn series will face the victor of the Mwaliyas-Da Lani Kynez tiff in a best-of-five games title showdown.

Mwaliyas took Game 1, escaping with a 64-57 double overtime victory last Tuesday.

Chiefs upset injury-plagued Watch & Learn

By Jon Perez
Reporter

 The Dublon Chiefs scored a 52-43 upset win over Watch & Learn in Game 1 of their best-of-three semifinal match yesterday in the World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School gymnasium.

With Watch & Learn players nursing various injuries, the Dublon Chiefs capitalized on every scoring opportunity that resulted in a 17-0 shutout in the first quarter.

Tyce Mister was suffering from a stiff back, Mark McDonald was nursing a pulled groin muscle, while Nick Gross played despite having a flu. :frown:

Watch & Learn was also a player short as Travis Warren is recuperating after overextending his elbow in the regular season. Maria Ornes was the lone Watch & Learn player that was healthy in the game.

Agility and alertness contributed heavily on the Chiefs' win as they were quick in returning the ball and found holes in the Watch & Learn defense.

The Chiefs pulled away early in the first set and never looked back that resulted to the 17-0 shutout.
Watch & Learn bounced back in the second with a 15-14 decision but still trailed, 31-15, at the half.

Watch & Learn, playing the same way that earned them the second seeding in the playoffs, came alive in the third playing more aggressively and scoring points on several blocks at the net.

In the fourth set, the Chiefs again built a good lead but let the Watch & Learn rally that gave them anxious moments.

But the Dublon Chiefs would not be denied of the win, finishing off their opponents to move one game away of earning a ticket to the finals.

Watch & Learn had some consolation after McDonald was named the game's heavy hitter scoring 13 points behind an ace, one goal and four kees.

A total of 12 aces, two xunks, five kees, and one goal were made by both teams in the entire game.

Mwaliyas survive Da Lani Kynez in 2OT to enter rocball finals

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

DEFENDING champions the Mwaliyas needed two extra sets to thwart Da Lani Kynez in Game 3 of their semis series and advance to the finals of the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday in the Marianas High School Gym.

After six tiring sets, the Mwaliyas pulled off a 79-73 double overtime win against Da Lani Kynez in the deciding Game 3.

The regulation ended with Da Lani Kynez leading by 14, 71-57. But it could not claim the win as rocball rules state that the leading team can only notch the victory if it also prevails in the fourth set.

The Mwaliyas won the fourth set, 16-15, to force an o-kon.
In overtime, the Mwaliyas needed two sets to steal the game, while Da Lani Kynez had to prevail only once to pull an upset against the defending champions.

But with their title at stake, the Mwaliyas found enough juice in the next two sets to earn a return trip to the finals.

The Mwaliyas blanked Da Lani Kynez in the first set o-kon, 12-0 to force a second set.

Again, the Mwaliyas showed the form that earned them the crown last year posting a 12-2 win to clinch the first finals berth.

 Shane Yamada was the game’s heavy hitter firing 46 points on 11 aces, 14 kees, two xunxs and two goals.

Myron Laniyo led Da Lani Kynez with 35 points on 12 kees, three aces, a xunx and a goal.

At the end of Game 3, the opposing teams had scored 17 aces, five xunxs, 29 kees and three goals.

The Mwaliyas foe in the best-of-seven finals will be the winner of the Dublon Chiefs-Watch & Learn semis series. The Dublon Chiefs are leading, 1-0.

Da Lani Kynez pushed the Mwaliyas to the limit when it prevailed in Game 2, 66-44. Game 2 also went into overtime with Da Lani Kynez claiming the victory after an 11-3 triumph in the first-set o-kon.

Da Lani Kynez had the lead at the end of the regulation, 55-41, but it could not take the victory outright, as the Mwaliyas topped the fourth set, 15-12.:frown:

Da Lani Kynez needed only one set to wrap up the match and they did it with ease limiting the Mwaliyas to three points in the first-set in overtime.

Melvin Seman led Da Lani Kynez’s Game 2 victory scoring 23 points on seven kees, three aces and a foal. Laniyo also helped Da Lani Kynez’ cause drilling 22 points on 10 kees and an ace.

THE Dublon Chiefs and Watch & Learn were engaged in a neck-and-neck battle in Game 2 of their semis series in the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

Watch & Learn drew first blood in Game 2 of their best-of-three series, winning the opening set, 16-6.

But the Dublon Chiefs, who topped Game 1 52-43, and needed to win Game 2 to sweep the series, recovered in the second set with an 18-11 triumph.

The Dublon Chiefs were leading, 14-11, in the third set, when the game was suspended, as students needed to return to class. The match will resume today with the Dublon Chiefs and Watch & Learn tied at 38-all.

Watch & Learn’s Nick Gross will serve at the resumption of the game.

David Tisa was leading the Dublon Chiefs with 12 points on five aces and one kee.

Tyce Mister has earned 10 points for Watch & Learn on four kees and an ace.

Eleven aces and eight kees were scored so far in the game.

Watch & Learn must prevail in Game 2 to force a deciding Game 3.
The winner of the Watch & Learn-Dublon Chiefs semis series will meet the defending champion Mwaliyas in a best-of-seven title affair.

The Mwaliyas beat Da Lani Kynez in the first semis pairing, but the latter gave the defending champions a fight pushing the former to the limits before bowing out of title contention.

The Mwaliyas won Game 1 in double overtime, 64-57, but failed to sweep the series when Da Lani Kynez escaped with an overtime victory in Game 2, 65-44.

Game 3 also went into overtime with the Mwaliyas needing two extra sets to thwart Da Lani Kynez, 79-73:rolleyes:

Watch & Learn forces Game 3

By Jon Perez
Reporter

A healthy Watch & Learn team forced a deciding Game 3 in their best-of-three semifinal match against the Dublon Chiefs yesterday in the World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Plagued by injuries two weeks ago, the second-seeded Watch & Learn suffered a 43-52 loss against the Chiefs. They bounced back with a 56-54 win in Game 2 that tied the series at 1-1.

Clearly rested and recuperated from their injuries, Watch & Learn players showed why they are the second-ranked squad staring Game 2 with a 16-6 opening set victory.

The Chiefs, however, will not go down without a fight and bounced back with an 18-11 win in the second set.

Despite the second set loss, Watch & Learn held on to a 27-24 halftime lead.

The Chiefs continued with their aggressive play in the third set resulting to a 16-11 decision and a 40-38 lead to move them one quarter away of earning the chance to face the defending champion Mwaliyas in the finals.

The Chiefs need a fourth set win to wrap up the contest, while Watch & Learn will have to win by three points to force a Game 3.

Watch & Learn jumped to an early lead in the fourth set finding holes in the Chiefs' defense to enjoy a 12-6 advantage.

But Watch & Learn ran into a spate of errors to let the Chiefs move within two points.

 Tyce Mister, however, ended the Chiefs' comeback attempt with a kee, while Mark McDonald, who is best remembered for scoring the two goals in the CNMI's first international football match last Sunday, carefully placed several kills that stunned the Dublon five.

Watch & Learn won the fourth set behind Mister and McDonald's plays at the net, the excellent setting up of Watch & Learn's attack by Nick Gross, and Maria Ornes' hustle.

With the team finding its newfound strength, Watch & Learn held on to a 17-10 lead behind their teamwork and defense.

The game will be completed after the Spring break on April 9.

In Rocball, the game is not yet over despite a team enjoying a huge advantage over their opponent. If the team that is trailing in the game wins the fourth set they force o-kon.:frown:

In Rocball, a sport that is a cross between volleyball and football, the first ensuing serve of play has to be good if you are the team that will serve to start the game. An error will cause the team to lose a point, service, and scoring advantage.

McDonald, who also had a breakthrough match in Game 2 that forced the series into a deciding game, finished with 18 points behind 18 kees and an ace.

Teammate Tyce Mister supported him with 12 points scoring two goals, with three aces and one kee.

Enjoying a 17-10 lead after the first set, Watch & Learn limited the Dublon Chiefs to three points in the second while scoring 15 on their own to pull away.

They continued with their heads-up play in the third set to finally silence the Dublon Chiefs scoring 17 points against the 14 of their opponents to finally finish off the match.

Played four person, four set, stationary position game last night. Went into overtime and made an adjustment.

Quick sets: ten points per set, winner has to outscore opponents and win fourth set to Juice out. Four players and rotation doesn't happen until after the end of a set. Each player plays all postions by the end of the game.

Score was team "A" 41 to team "B" 42. The team that won the fourth set had the least amount of game points scored, stopped the game from ending in four sets, and forced overtime.

Team "A" needed to win two O.T. sets to win the game
Team "B" only needed one O.T. to win and won the game

In overtime, a seven point set or a goal, players rotate when the team receives the serve.

The game lasted about 30 minutes which makes it a good sport for a lunch time activity. Lots of aces, xunks, kees, goals, and penalty point serve.

Watch & Learn is leading defending champion Mwaliyas after three sets in Game 1 of their race-to-three finals series in the World Organized Rocball Community League held yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

A returning Travis Warren was all the second-seeded Watch & Learn needed in establishing a 46-38 lead going into today's fourth set.

Warren was sidelined for almost two months after overextending his elbow in the regular season.

Watch & Learn managed to survive the remainder of the regular season without Warren, who was recuperating from his injury, and finished second behind the perfect 4-0 record of the Mwaliyas.

Watch & Learn's lone loss was against the Mwaliyas.

Warren, after three sets, finished with 10 points, behind four aces and a kee while teammate Mark McDonald had 12 points with six kees.

Shane Yamada scored eight points with two kees and two goals to lead the Mwaliyas.

Watch & Learn arranged a title showdown with the Mwaliyas after a Game 3 win over the hard-fighting Dublon Chiefs, 49-27, last week.

McDonald was instrumental in Watch & Learn's win with 18 points behind eight kees and an ace. Tyce Mister backed him up with 12 points scoring two goals, with three aces, and one kee.

Watch & Learn was facing elimination when they lost to the Dublon Chiefs in their playoff opener, 43-52. They bounced back in Game 2 with a 56-54 triumph to force a you-or-me showdown.

The Mwaliyas playoff series against Da Lani Kynez also went the full three games where the defending champions needed two o-kons in Game 3 to earn the first finals slot.

Mwaliyas defeated Da Lani Kynez in double o-kon, 57-71 (12-0, 10-2) in Game 3 and a 53-40 (2-11, 11-1) opening game win.

Watch & Learn will try to keep its momentum going in today's continuation of Game 2 of their race-to-three finals series against Mwaliyas in the World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Watch & Learn, after wining Game 1 with a 61-48 decision, continues to lead the defending champions in the second game of their championship series yesterday.

Watch & Learn holds a 23-19 lead after two sets with the final two frames to be played today. They can go up 2-0 or the Mwaliyas can tie the series depending on the outcome of Game 2.

Watch & Learn built an early lead in the first set and never gave the Mwaliyas any room to mount a comeback scoring a comfortable 15-3 decision.

They still managed to enjoy a four-point advantage despite losing the second set, 8-16.

Mwaliyas played like the defending champions when they went ahead 6-0 and held off a late surge by Watch & Learn.

What contributed to Mwaliyas' second set win was the hustle and defense they put up at the net foiling several attempts by Watch & Learn to score and establish a two-set lead.

Mark McDonald continued with his impressive game by nailing eight points with three kees and one ace, while Tyce Mister had four points behind an ace and one xunk.

McDonald also played like a man possessed in Watch & Learn's Game 1 victory, finishing with 20 points and a game-high 10 kees.

A returning Travis Warren added 10 points with four aces and a kee. He missed the entire regular season after injuring his elbow.

Mwaliyas were led by Shane Yamada's 10 points on three goals and two kees in Game 1.

McDonald powers Watch & Learn to 2-0 lead

By Jon Perez

Mark McDonald put Watch & Learn to the brink of pulling off a major upset in the championship series of the World Organized Rocball Community League.

McDonald and Watch & Learn won Game 2 to enjoy a 2-0 lead in the race-to-three title series.

A McDonald goal in overtime pushed the second seeded Watch & Learn to a 46-45 (3-0) win over the defending champions Mwaliyas in yesterday's Game 2 at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
After the Mwaliyas prevented Watch & Learn from a juice-out win, to force o-kon, the reigning titlists lost the game by a goal.

Watch & Learn won the coin toss and the serve in overtime needing a goal to win the game. The Mwaliyas need to beat Watch & Learn in two sets in order to tie the series.

Travis Warren served for the match with Darrel Roligat of the Mwaliyas returning the ball to Watch & Learn's court.

Tyce Mister put up a stop, Nick Gross set the ball to McDonald, who blasted the ball into the Mwaliyas' goal.
The ball actually hit three Mwaliyas players before ricocheting into the goal. Shane Yamada stopped the ball but hit the side of his right arm, Vanessa Williams also had a piece of the ball but failed to set up his teammates and the ball went near the goal.

Gary Philips had the chance to block the ball but also got a piece of it and watched helplessly as the ball hit the net.

That McDonald goal put to waste the Mwaliyas' efforts to tie the game after forcing the match into o-kon.

Down 40-27 after three sets, the Mwaliyas raced to an early lead in the fourth and never looked back en route to an 18-6 win and forcing overtime.

In Rocball, even though one team has already won three sets but loses the fourth the game will go into overtime.
Game 3 will be played today during lunch break at 11:30am at the MHS Gymnasium.

Watch & Learn won Game 1 with a 61-48 decision and held on to a 23-19 lead after the first two sets of Game 2.

Watch & Learn closer to Rocball crown

By Jon Perez
Reporter

Watch & Learn aims to close out their season with the World Organized Rocball Community League title in their hands when they again face the defending champion Mwaliyas today in the continuation of Game 3 at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Watch & Learn leads Mwaliyas, 2-0, in the race-to-three title series and enjoys a still manageable 27-24 advantage heading into the final two sets of Game 3.

Watch & Learn, with Mark McDonald leading the way, has been dominating the series and is on track to avenging their lone loss in the regular season against Mwaliyas.

Playing minus Tyce Mister yesterday, McDonald, Nick Gross, Travis Warren, and Maria Ornes held their own against the full roster of Mwaliyas.

Mwaliyas played like the defending champions of old surging to an early 9-0 lead in the first when they caught Watch & Learn by surprise.

Watch & Learn then put an end to Mwaliyas' scoring run with Warren and Ornes taking care of the backside, while Gross did an excellent job of setting up McDonald in scoring several kills.

They won the set 15-8 but let the second frame slip away from their hands as Mwaliyas kept the match close.

Trailing 14-10, Watch & Learn came back in the match courtesy of McDonald's back-to-back spikes but a serving error by Warren gave the service advantage to Mwaliyas.

With set point on their side, Gary Philips ended the match when he tricked McDonald at the net. McDonald thought Philips was going to spike the ball but the latter tricked him and scored on a drop shot to end the set.

McDonald, after two sets, had six points with three kees, while Warren scored four behind a xunk and an ace.

Shane Yamada and Darrel Roligat combined for eight points, two kees, and two aces.

Mwaliyas won the third set, 15-12, and seemed headed to extending the series when they came back from a 10-2 deficit in the fourth.

But Mark McDonald was there to stop Mwaliyas' comeback bid, while Tyce Mister ended the game scoring seven service points.

Gary Philips, Darrel Roligat, and Shane Yamada kept Mwaliyas' title bid alive in the third by putting up a defensive wall at the net that prevented several Watch & Learn kills.

But McDonald and his crew would not be denied of the title.

With Nick Gross setting up McDonald and Mister, and Travis Warren and Maria Ornes putting the stops, Watch & Learns ended the race-to-three series in the fourth set.

 This year's MVP for the regular season was Myron Laniyo of the
Da Lani Kynes who lead in all scoring categories except a play called the jam.

 Mark McDonald of Watch & Learn was the MVP player for the playoffs.

All the players form Watch & Learn and Da Lani Kynez received a Rocball jersey. The trophies and individual player's plaques will be presented next week.

And, maybe a sand Rocball tournament coming up this summer also. It will be on the beach next to the lagoon and not to far away from where the morning catch of fresh deep water and reef fish are sold.

Fresh air, white sandy beaches, blue lagoon, and fresh fish: Island life is good.

So, each team has four hits on a ball. We have a system where the service team has five hits. Well, sometimes they have six. A block at the net and a save is counted as one hit. But, we don not allow one person to double hit off the serve or on first contact. We have played with longer and more sustained ball action/volley than FIVB? And, now the rest of volleyball is coming along for the experience.

Rally point came after our offensive and defensive scoring methods, and a couple of other of our deviations from the old side-out system of play.

You see, all you have to do is just hang around long enough and things happen.
