SOO- i tutor in math during class and often times, kids come to me outside of class for help. i give up classtime from other classes, lunch and break to help them. i have good notes from bio lectures and kids come to me for help or wanting copies of my notes. should i start charging? or just help them out of the good of my heart?

i help them because i want them to do well. it's not so much about the money because the end result/reaction is what's really rewarding, BUT i am broke right now. i have NO money, but i NEED money. narf. if i started charging i'd feel like i'm short-changing them cus i'm not qualified. what should i do?

AND (added later on, after initial post..)
what do i do about the kids who i've never ever talked to before finals? they just want help from me or copies of my notes cus i'm a fricking nerd. i sorta feel like "yes, i want to charge you" but at the same time, i'd feel bad for taking their money.

the boyfriend would tell me to charge. what do you guys think?

I would just help them out. But, don't let them take your notes, because my teacher once told me, " You must learn how to do these yourself and learn as you go along "

Don't charge. Just give them some help, but let them learn on their own .... and besides, it would give you a good appearance from those kids if they get good grades.

I think you should help them but not at your own expense. It seems like you're using up a lot of your own time for them... Don't let them take advantage of you. It shows a lot of character that you'd do that though, especially without taking any money for it.

but why say no to some people and yes to others? :/

Just help people who want to learn, not people who want your answers to go on to the next grade level. Simple as that.

If you charge, then they won't come for your help..since they would have to pay each time..

because in high school, we're allowed to play favorites! :D

i say you charge the people you want, and don't charge the people that you don't want to. that's how i do it... closer friends i have no problem giving help to, but when it's those people who are your best buds when they want something, they don't deserve your charity. charge them a modest fee, and they really won't mind THAT much, since they really don't have anywhere else to go anyway.

They would probably go to teachers or their other buddies for help i guess.

my ex-econ major says hell yeah charge them for all they're willing to pay! my uhhh dumb bound-by-convention side says it's gonna make you look bad if you charge, but *shrug* maybe you can go and do tutoring as a job or something.
