do you like halloween? are you gonna dress up as anything and wear your costume to class or work? go trick or treating in your neighborhood? what kind of candy do/are YOU gonna pass out? favorites as a kid? any pre/post trick-or-treating rituals?
at the halloween superstore, they had costumes of like geishas, china girls, chinamen, etc. bothered me.
what're your thoughts on older teens (with costumes) going trick or treating? ..and those kids who go collecting candy without costumes?
<sigh> if only i had a bf. we could dress up as some couple from TV or something, dammit.
I stopped dressing up and creeping for candy after middle school. It was about that age that everyone started roaming the streets with shaving cream and eggs instead of costumes and bags of candy. Imagine the scene: dozens upon dozens of high schoolers, letting the shaving cream and eggs fly, many of 'em aimed at the police cars and rent a cops, all taking place in the more affluent parts of Santa Monica! That was great. I don't think that shit happens anymore.
But I do recall fondly dressing up for Halloween, breaking that magical green light stick, rotting my teeth silly. Can't wait 'til I've got a kid of my own or my brother and sister-in-law make me a nephew or niece so I can relive those days...

An older kid coming to my door without a costume is not a trick or treater but a trespasser and will be shot on sight.
j/k
I love the little trick or treaters. I give out the good stuff - decent size Snickers, Kit Kat, Reeses' Peanut Butter Cups, Milky Way, Three Musketeers, M&Ms, etc. and of course, Smarties. I don't give out any of that weird cheapo candy.

i'll dress up as a rioter. i'll carry a burning torch and someone else's TV as accessories. if the police ask, I'll claim it's an American custom.

i still do that!!! :P :D
more recent halloweens have just been me and some friends chilling at someone's house and watching a movie. i remember when i was in elementary school/junior high i went out trick or treating w/my best friend and we would have contests to see whose stash weighed more at the end of the night. he would always beat me by like a quarter pound...

A few years ago, this bike advocacy organization Times Up had an event that started with a nighttime bike ride through Central Park, with entertainment at various stops along the way, followed by a Critical Mass type ride through the city streets down to the Village for a party there. I did that while dressed in a Spiderman costume - that worked out quite well. I should pull that outfit out again some time.
The ride went through Times Square - that's a cool place for riding a bike at night. The lights are so bright that it's like being in daylight.
Lately, I've just watched the parade that goes up 6th Ave - http://www.halloween-nyc.com/
On Halloween night here, Carl Cox is playing at the Roxy. There's gotta be a face mask out there that looks like him (a big black guy, for those who don't know).

As kids get older and older, their costumes just get sluttier and sluttier. Freakin' 12 year olds wearing practically nothing. *Shiver*
I always got in more trouble on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Most memorable year was the year we got in a huge fight with some guys and they smashed the windows out of my friend's car.

The last hospital halloween function we had, one of the doctors from radiology came as a mammogram with a sign that said "Place your breasts here."
He won best costume.

I'm probably going completely goth this year. Then I'm going to go flash people. You cannot, I stress, cannot wear a trench without flashing people.

I was so tempted to last year. My friends and I were talking about dressing me up as Bin Laden and being bombed on the street.

I wanna go totally goth. And take advantage of being able to wear slutty clothes. I'm thinkin, all black, short ass skirt, fishnets, oddly colored hair, dark/white makeup, the whole 9.
A few years back, my brother dressed up as a flashing priest, complete with panty hose and a sewn on dong. That was pretty sweet.

Heh. Where I am that wouldn't be considered a Holloween costume. Here it's everyday wear.

Did the bump have anything to do with the discussion about the Halloween mask going on in the Rant Room ?

I thought you might have been trying to divert attention away from that thread to a more peaceful discussion about Halloween. There has been some potential for getting ugly on the that thread.
I bumped another thread a few days ago and it just got reburied. Oh well.

when i was younger.. i use to be really into halloween big time... collecting all the candy and what not.... and a group of us kids... we would collect some mad amount of candy... like a hefty garbage bag full.... and it wasn't like your miniature candy bars.. but i use to live in a rich suburban area... and we would get the full sized candy bars...
anyhow, when i first moved into a city area... i discovered halloween in the city is just so much different than in the suburbs... kids, they go out earlier... and instead of knocking on peoples homes... they collect their candy from store to store.... dunno... that doesnt seem as fun to me...

yeah, TJ. going from store to store doesn't appeal very much to me, either.
the fire and police departments block traffic from a few residential blocks and designate them "safety streets." they give the homeowners in the area candy to pass out to all the kids (in addition to whatever other candy they want to purchase themselves). i think you get a small amount of money if you decorate your house really festively. safety is sorta ensured because fire and police guys walk around making sure everythings okay. it gets really crowded because more and more people find out about it each year, and families from different cities trick or treat there.

Well, I'm a teenager, and I trick-or-treat, so....
I'll probably end up going as a character from Monty Python or a sleeping bag. And, yes, I'll be wearing it to school. Ya, I've seen those costumes, too... I suppose it depends on how you look at it, tho, because there are a lot of costumes out there that reflect ancient tradition.
