A HOBBIT HELMS FANTASTIC FOUR?
1.20.04
By Devin Faraci
Contributing sources: Superhero Hype!, Carl Robertson

Could it be Samwise the Blockbuster Director? Sean Astin let it slip that he's up for the directing gig on the long in preproduction Fantastic Four movie. Owners of the Two Towers DVD will no doubt have seen Sean's short film, made on location in New Zealand, and fans of the Joss Whedonverse caught him directing a rather good episode of Angel last season. Sean's made no secret of the fact that he wants to spend more time behind the camera.

As for who he sees in the main roles, Astin told reporters that he would love to have George Clooney as Reed Richards (a name that has been attached to the role for some time), and Orlando Bloom would make a perfect Human Torch.

George Clooney I could see as Reed Richards, but Orlando Bloom...already shoving him down our throats a little too much. The people I think could work as the FF are -

Sue Storm(The Invisible Woman) - Charlize Theron
http://my-autographs.de/theron.jpg

Johnny Storm(The Human Torch) - Chris Masterson

And as the Thing, James Gandolfini(the voice, anyway)

This is just who I think fit the characters, but you know....

i like your casting choices. but the marvel movie verse has been making everyone much younger, so i dunno if they'll go the contemporary ages with this movie. might be nice for a change.

i would prefer bloom for the human torch -- but I would also watch him in a three hour monologue about his left shoe :)

i don't want clooney as reed richards. i'm sure there's someone better. i'm drawing a blank but i'm *sure* there's someone better.

i swear!! agent smith in elf form was just bizarre. i just like the one elf... and oh, what an elf he be :)

back on topic, i think the fantastic four will just be awful. i mean, what a low point in comics history -- the code names are just painful, the entire origin story is such a cop-out... There's no way this could be anything *but* cheesy.

Come on, you know we need a little bit of cheese in our lives. The entire storyline is goofy, and they can't do anything but add a little humor, cause playing it straight would kill it.

hey, i would love to see Charlize Theron play Susan Storm. then again, i would watch her in a three-hour monologue about her left shoe - as long as she's wearing not enough clothes to keep warm.

and Chris Masterson seems like a good choice for Johnny Storm. but i'm not so sure about James Gandolfini as the Thing. there're probably better choices.

as for the real potential cast. no, i don't like George Clooney and i think he'd make a shitty Mr. Fantastic. and i think they can probably find someone more energetic than Orlando Bloom to play Johnny Storm.

as far as reed richards.... isn't there anyone older? and less *wry* about things? george clooney has a perpetual half smile that wouldn't work with serious-to-a-fault reed richards.

Well, now that I look over another web site, they say that Alexis Desinof who plays Wesley on Angel might be up for the role too.http://www.angelfire.com/droid/tdawg/4898501_2_45.jpg

Clooney is a talented actor in my opinion, and he may be able to pull off Reed's overall brainy persona. Though this dude looks a little more like him....

Yeah, I heard Willow the flute girl was with him. I didn't think she was all that attractive back in the day, but when she got those wiccan powers and was giving old Jim a sample underneath the table in American Wedding, I had to change my tune.

Gondolfini is a bad choice for Thing...if you just listen to his voice and pitch, it doesn't sound gruff enough. I imagine whoever did the voice for Grimlock on Transformers as the voice of Thing.

I like Theron as Sue. I also think Elizabeth Shue would work as well. Nicole Kidman?

How about Gerard Butler for Reed?

Heath Ledger for Torch?

oh no, i was being serious :)... actually, i think he did a good job in attack of the clones. the only thing i thought was good about the movie actually. i mean think about it... it's not like lucas really *gave* him anything to work with.... and then look at the anger and passion in his eyes right after he slaughters the camp after his mom dies.

it's *very* convincing. it's just the dialogue that was written for him was awful... there wasn't much he could do with it. also, he had to try and link the pretty quiet and brilliant kid with the evil and dark darth vadar -- he couldn't put too much emotion in his delivery because it woulda been unconvincing that he could end up so coldhearted later.

and shattered glass was pretty good. that's what really convinced me that he has potential.

Who Is Directing Fantastic Four?
IGN FilmForce knows the Story.
April 05, 2004 - Marvel Studios honcho Avi Arad recently advised About.com, "We have a director [for Fantastic Four but] I cannot tell you who he is until Tuesday. ... We needed for this movie a director that's a genius with relationships. It's a movie about relationships."

IGN FilmForce knows who that "genius" is. We've been able to confirm that Barbershop director Tim Story has landed the gig. Story's next release is the English-language remake of Taxi, starring Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon.

He's also attached to direct the Chris Rock vehicle Sick Day for Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures.

We were also advised that filming begins in August. Location scouting is underway. Look for casting to begin soon.

Story's hiring may be another indication that Fox and Marvel are intent on making Fantastic Four a comedy. Previous directors attached to the project were Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo) and Peyton Reed (Down with Love). Actor-filmmaker Sean Astin has also pursued the directing gig.

Look to IGN FilmForce for more news on Fantastic Four as it happens!

---------------------------------------------------------
Well, on the one hand I'm glad to see a black director get a shot at directing something as iconic as this, though I'm praying he knows the subject matter and knows the characters well enough to do it justice.

I've read their comics before and Doctor Doom seems really corny to me. I've even watched some of their cartoons. I think they should make a realistic version of Fantastic Four. They should show the stretchy guy doing tricks in bed and the invisible woman walking through a NFL locker room pulling pranks, that would be SOOO cool. The human torch should go to his black friends barbecue and fire up the grill while The Kings of Comedy make jokes about him behind his back and the Thing or Rock whatever he's called should go hunt for the Al Quaida hiding in caves since he blends in the background. That would be SOOO awesome!

depends on the vampire mythos. usually they can't, but in blade, vampirism is a viral disease that requires the victim to need constant blood transfusions - thus the sucking of the blood.

since the vampires aren't dead but genetic variations on humans, they can breed.

there has also been an instance of vampire breeding on angel, but that was a mystical thing that wasn't supposed to happen.

Christina Millian Up for Susan Storm?
Source: Cinescape
Monday, April 12, 2004

Cinescape reports a rumor that "Love Don't Cost a Thing" and "Torque" star Christina Millian is one of the actresses is being considered for the part of Susan Storm, aka The Invisible Woman, in Fox's Fantastic Four.

Last week it was reported that Michael Chiklis ("The Shield") and Tim Robbins ("Mystic River") are up for the roles of The Thing and Dr. Doom, respectively. And we heard that German actor Ralf Moeller may have a part as well.

Stay tuned for much more on the Tim Story-directed film.

I REALLY don't think they'll do this, but I would have to personally go to Marvel Inc. and smack both Stan Lee and Avi Arad upside the head if they went ahead with this. It's obvious they're trying to cash in on some "hip" demographic if they went ahead with this, which I doubt they will. My vote is still Naomi Watts for the Invisible Woman.

20th Century Fox Has 3 of the 4 Fantastic Four
Source: Variety
Thursday, July 8, 2004

20th Century Fox has cast Michael Chiklis (TV's The Shield) to play Ben Grimm/The Thing, Ioan Gruffudd (King Arthur) as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic and Chris Evans (Cellular) as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch in its Fantastic Four adaptation.

Variety also says that Jessica Alba, currently shooting Dimension's Sin City, has emerged as most likely to play Sue Richards/the Invisible Woman, though Rachel MacAdams and Keri Russell are also candidates.

"We see 'Fantastic Four' as the last great jewel in the comicbook crown," said Fox production president Hutch Parker. "The casting has been extremely important in terms of fulfilling expectations of an audience that's been incredibly loyal to these characters for over 40 years."

The $85 million-$90 million adaptation of the Marvel comic is headed for an August or September start in Vancouver. The planned release date is July 1, 2005, when it will face off against Paramount's Mission: Impossible 3. Tim Story is directing from a script by Simon Kinberg.

oooooh man...that bent over shot of her should be registered as a lethal weapon...time for a desktop wallpaper revival!

I think she might be showcasing her deep-sea diving role in "Into The Blue," which I believe is coming out this spring.

The movie so far looks dope...I was seriously having my misgivings, but if they can make it as good as X-Men, I'm straight! A little strange how they didn't keep the movie "classic" and have Reed and Sue Richards in their 40-somethings. But I guess to pull in the younger demographic who only know the slicked-up "new" Marvel age stuff you gotta make concessions!

Seriously? I thought CG of the Hulk was dead on, but the "thinking man's" take on his character did the movie in. I was actually making excuses for people to go see that...kinda dedicated to Marvel and all that!

"Unstable molecules." At least that's the excuse the comics gave for the stuff they wore.

She could play a good joke and take an invisible poop in the ladies' room. Then, when someone comes in to take theirs and wonders why the "clean" stall smells so bad, she can laff out loud without getting caught.

Kitty > I'm not so deep into the FF comix as I am other Marvel stuff, but aren't IW's invisiblity and forcefield abilities two separate things even though they're coming from the same place? IW's invisiblity and forcefield abilities two separate things even though they're coming from the same place?

Nope... when they finally decided to start explaining the powers (which I'm not sure they did with the old incarnation, but they definitely started doing in the Ultimates universe), it was explained that the Invisible Woman's invisibility comes from an expanding "exoskeleton" forcefield she can generate that bends light around her. She can also extend that forcefield around other objects and even send break it off and use it as projectiles. It's one power that has two many applications. Incidentally, it was explained that way in the movie too.

Unrelated: the explanations for the torch and mr. fantastic are kinda cool. the torch's metabolism is extremely quick, so he gives off the heat of his own metabolism, combined with a fireproof skin. mr. fantastic has no recognizably human internal organs, instead he's made up of several spongy plaques that can stretch with him.

Why did they have to go and give Dr. Doom super powers as well? Leave it alone.

cuz he

has powers in the comic, too...

I do understand they had to alter his origin in the movie, as in the comics he creates the entire suit from start to finish equipped with the lasers, superstrength, flight, etc. And he's also a master of sorcery and the dark arts, not to mention hypnotism. He normally lets his underlings do his dirty work, and I'm hoping that's where the sequel leads, if he takes over Latveria.

ok, i finally watched the movie.

Dr. Doom is hands-down my favourite super-villain, and i didn't like what they did to him. in the comic book (not the Ultimates, which i don't know much about), he has no super powers of his own. he was just a really smart and evil guy (although he has fought to protect Earth together with super heroes - he doesn't want to rule over a pile of rubble now, does he?). he got scarred, and he built his armour. the armour has a bunch of weaponry, and he also knows some magic which i think he got from his mother, who was a gypsy.

but oh well, i think the "authentic" version of how he got his powers would have been too much for the regular movie audience.

as for the story itself, it was like a very typical action movie script. there wasn't anything that made it especially good. but i wasn't watching the movie for a good script. like all other comic book movies, i went to watch the live-action super powers, which i thought was pretty nicely done.

i was very disappointed with the final battle though. too easy.

all i'm thinking is, there better be some Doombots in the sequel.

really? then his origins was changed in the ultimates universe. in the ultimates, his origin is pretty much the same...

yeah originally he wasn't in space with Fantastic Four when they got hit by the cosmic wave/radiation/whatever.

Dr. Doom's Ultimate origin:

Reed, Sue and Johnny are part of some prodigy kids research building with Victor Von Doome (sp?). Reed was hired because he was looking into the ability to transport objects into this other dimension but he finds out that shiftin gobjects into this other dimension alters them to take on a form that is one of the infinite possible forms an object could be (sort of part of alternate dimension theory, there are infinite number of dimensions because there are infinite number of states an object can be in). Reed and Victor work together to create a large dimension shifter thing, but Victor deliberately screws up the calculations at the last minute. At the machine's test, Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben (who is Reed's only friend growing up and is backpacking cross-country and just HAPPENS to show up right when they're about to test) and Victor are all shifted through the alternate dimension which explains the powers. Victor also gets shifted so he gets his funky powers too.) Then, he blames Reed for the accident and swears vengeance, blah blah blah...

Dr. Doom's powers came from his suit just like Iron Man. Tony Stark was just an ordinary scientist that made a suit that provided his weapons.
