Presidential Candidates Head to Head
Your vote counts. Make an informed decision in November.

By Amy Tocco

Your vote does count, if you're 18 that is. Even if you're not, it's good practice to form an intelligent opinion on the men that could be leading our country. Here's an at-a-glance look at the candidate's stand on issues that will most likely concern teens in the next four years.

Minimum Wage
Bush: Opposes an across-the-board increase from $5.15 an hour
Kerry: Supports increasing minimum wage from $5.15 to $7 an hour by 2007
Cobb: Supports increasing minimum wage to $10 an hour

Iraq
Bush: Defends his decision to send troops to Iraq despite there being no weapons of mass destruction found to date. Bush supports U.S. troops' continued involvement in the restoration of Iraq post democratic handover.
Kerry: Wants to recruit more U.S. allies to assist in stabilizing Iraq and reduce the number of American troops there within six months
Cobb: Opposes the invasion of Iraq and the United States' continued occupation

Abortion Rights
Bush: Opposes abortion, except in cases of rape, incest or if the woman's life is threatened, and signed a bill banning partial-birth abortions
Kerry: Supports women's right to choose and opposes parental notification for minors under 18
Cobb: Supports women's right to choose

Death Penalty
Bush: Supports the death penalty
Kerry: Supports the death penalty under the condition that a national review of fairness occurs
Cobb: Views the death penalty as cruel and unusual punishment

Gay Marriage
Bush: Opposes gay marriage and aims to amend the constitution to define that a marriage is between a man and a woman
Kerry: Supports equal rights for civil unions, but not gay marriage
Cobb: Supports full equality for gay marriages

Prayer in School
Bush: Supports allowing prayer in the public schools
Kerry: Opposes prayer in school. He also opposes displaying the Ten Commandments in federal buildings.
Cobb: Supports the free expression of beliefs, but not forced

Homeland Security
Bush: Supports the Patriot Act, an expansion of the Coast Guard, the allowance of firearms in aircraft cockpits and continued expansion of airport security
Kerry: Wants to increase border security, begin the Homeland Health Initiative, cut off terrorists' money flow and privatize security efforts
Cobb: Wants to repeal the Patriot Act and adopt a non-offensive, only defensive military posture

Education
Bush: Continues to support the No Child Left Behind Act, which focuses on early education, teaching consistency, increased tutoring and making transferring to a better school easier
Kerry: Wants to initiate a Service for College plan, which will pay for a students' full state college tuition in exchange for two years of service to the state, and aid to schools who keep tuition down. Kerry also wants to increase teacher pay.
Cobb: Wants free public education from pre-school to grad school and to adjust school curriculums to be less Eurocentric and more reflective of diversity in American history

Environment
Bush: Wants to reduce harmful emissions from power plants, preserve and create wetlands, clean up industrial sites and communities and restore and protect the forests
Kerry: Wants to create cleaner communities by tackling contaminated industrial sites, unsafe play areas for children and urban sprawl. He also wants to protect public land and resources, reduce harmful air emissions and restore America's waters.
Cobb: Concerned with slowing global warming, finding energy from clean, renewable, domestic resources and protecting the forests.

Gun Control
Bush: Supports a ban on assault-type weapons and required background checks at gun shows
Kerry: Supports a ban on assault-type weapons and required background checks at gun shows
Cobb: Supports a ban on assault-type weapons and required licenses

Green Party. you know, they should really change the name of their party. it makes them look one-issue.

hahah looks like i agree with his stances a lot more than i do with both Bush and Kerry, with few exceptions - minimum wage, education, and gun control.

too bad i'd be throwing my vote away if i voted for him.

vote Not Bush i mean Kerry!

Cobb is great and ecological but I'll have to vote for Kerry who is really annoying me at this point with his lack of backbone.
