Well, Duke's campus is amazing, especially the main campus, which decked out in neo-Gothic architecture. Also, the student body's team spirit/school pride is unmatched by any Ivy. Actually, on a different discussion board, I met an undergrad (pre-law) at Duke. We had a discussion about Duke and law school, in general. Btw, I'm considering studying law in NC -- UNC or Wake Forest -- as much as I complain about the South. I hope he doesn't mind me posting this, here's what he said in a post about Duke:
I'm studying Philosophy and History.
You're right that Durham is not the greatest town, but I think it has potential. One great development is the huge, beautiful tobacco warehouses downtown. They are being converted into apartments and offices. Most of Durham is basically a ghetto. Duke is very isolated from the city though. Duke is gorgeous, but is surrounded by forest, isolating us from the harsh city. Durham does have some great features, including one world-class restaurant (Magnolia Grill), and a sense of history and charm that is missing from many of the other area cities. There is also a huge open-air mall development in the south part of the city called Southpoint.
As for great housing near Duke, you should know that most students stay on campus (including the on-campus apartments) for all 4 years. There are actually some nice apartments nearby which are full of grad students, and the old houses near east campus are cheap and huge (and mostly in decent shape). Most profs live in Chapel Hill. Durham does include some extremely high-income areas, including golf course/country club areas. Its more diverse than you might think.
Duke students go to Chapel Hill (8 miles away) for clubs and restaurants. If you've been there, you know that Chapel Hill is a great town. Real estate there is booming.
Also, the Research Triangle Park is the real heart of the metro area. Its like a huge campus, and full of trees and cool modern architecture.
I think you're right about the potential for more real estate in the Triangle. Land there is still relatively cheap, which is amazing considering RDU is the 4th fastest growing metro in the nation (tied with Atlanta).
We'll definitely have to meet up if you go to UNC or Wake.

Duke is well-rounded at the undergrad level, almost all liberal arts departments rival the Ivies. There's a good engineering program but it's not too impressive considering the prestige of the university. At the graduate level, Duke is world-renowned, ranked #4 by US News, for its medical programs and research. It's also world-renowned for its programs in business and law, ranked #7 and #12, by US News, respectively.
Just curious, what's your perception of Duke, before and after reading all this?

Don't apply unless you're in the top 10% of your class (and rich...lol). My cousin got it, she was #3 in her class. She didn't go, tho, b/c she coulcn't afford it. So, she's now at UNC. Do you think you can get into Duke?
