Canada's biggest Asian supermarket chain just got bigger. T&T Supermarket, which focuses on providing a range of Asian foods using a western approach to supermarket management, opened its first supermarket in Richmond, British Columbia in 1993.

It has now opened a 45,000 square foot store in Toronto - the 11th in the chain - and plans to open an even larger store (65,000 square feet) later this year in the town of Milliken, just outside Toronto.

Toronto is home to approximately half a million residents of Chinese descent. The new stores will be serviced by an eastern regional office scheduled to open this month, with an adjoining warehouse.

West Edmonton Mall has never had a major grocery anchor, until now. A T&T Supermarket recently opened in the world’s biggest indoor shopping mall. In fact, mall administration has developed an entire Chinatown area to complement the grocer’s Asian offerings.

The 50,500 square foot store offers a product line of more than 15,000 SKUs. It is not just Asians who are flocking to the store by the thousands – people from all demographics are frequenting the store to purchase the top-quality goods and the market-fresh products. In addition to an extensive imported packaged goods area, T&T has an in-store bakery and sushi bar, huge seafood meat and fresh product sections and a salad bar.

T&T Supermarkets Ltd. opened its first store in Burnaby B.C. in 1993. Due to the success of the flagship store, they soon launched an aggressive expansion plan. In less than 10 years, the chain has grown to include 10 stores: seven in B.C., one in Markham, Ont., and two in Alberta. Two new T&Ts will be opening in the GTA in 2003.

With more than 1,600 employees, T&T Supermarket is now the largest Asian grocer in Canada.
