View Full Version : Hurricane Ivan

Hurricane Ivan isn't going to hit Florida (well, not Miami, Tampa, etc, though it might go to Panama City). But right now it looks like it's going to hit Alabama, Mississippi, and Lousiana. NO is underwater, under sea level. Everybody knows that if a big ass hurricane hits New Orleans, they're fucked up cause the whole city is below sea level.
Florida's already had their ass kicked pretty hard. I see a lot of people around here that escaped the first two hurricanes, now there's a third one headed for Alabama. And New Orleans.
This might be reason enough for me to reconsider going to college in New Orleans like I wanted to..............

"What about the East Coast, Hiroshi?"

"New Orleans?"
"Fucked."

OK seriously y'all........................New Orleans is five feet below sea level, and according to the news the retaining walls/ levees surrounding the city can only withstand a category 3 hurricane, but Ivan is a category 5. They're saying New Orleans could be flooded up the second or third stories, easy.
Too bad.....................I was looking forward to Mardi Gras, next year...............when I'll be legal..............

You know what? During an election year, when Florida's hit by a natural disaster (ie a hurricane) they usually go Democrat. Maybe god's trying to send them a message this election year.

I'm surprised nobody's said anything about Hurricane Ivan. It really looks like it's going to hit Alabama, if not Louisiana. I've only been through one hurricane, we survived, but still..............

I'm not worried about Ivan. It won't hit me until Thurs and will be pretty weak by then. I hope none of you live in low-lying places in the South's Piedmont. The flooding those places get pretty bad. My location is pretty good, flooding never happens here. I'm not sure if it's because I'm close to the ocean or not. The water just drains away into the ocean. When the inland floods, the water has to be soaked up by the ground or drained by rivers, that can't handle the drainage, because the unflat geography traps the water. One thing that is sometimes a problem in places near me is flash flooding. All that water drains from high altitudes and the water comes rushing down. Thankfully, I've never been hit by a flash flood.

Don't hurricanes pick up strength when passing over water? Last I heard, it was a class 5. I'd be shitting bricks but then again I don't deal with hurricane threats yearly...

You guys might find the below link interesting. It explains the categories of hurricanes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saffir-Simpson_Hurricane_Scale
Beat180, from what I know, hurricances gain strength over deep, warm water.
Up to category 4, as long as your house is well-built, the wind isn't too big of a problem. It'll knock some down some trees, power lines and rip off some roof shingles of a well-built structure. I don't know about category 5, tho, I'm not sure if I've ever encountered one. Regardless of category, the real problem is the flooding. The slower the hurricane the more rain that gets dropped in one place. So, even lower category hurricanes can pose serious threats. What's phenomenonal about Ivan is that it's a slow-moving category 5. I'd be shitting bricks if I lived closer to the Gulf Coast.

Yeah WongBa lives in Mobile, that's why he's not here right now.................
I got friends and family in Mobile. They, like really need to get out. This hurricane's supposed to hit Birmingham by Thursday, but it won't be as bad by then cause it'll be inland.

The wind won't be that bad on the inland, the flooding in low-lying places is a problem, tho. I have a feeling downtown Birmingham will flood. I can't remember which hurricane, it was a couple years ago, when Crabtree Valley in Raleigh flooded. I heard cars were literally floating down there. For those who don't know, Crabtree Valley is literally a small valley and at the bottom of it is a large mall and several office complexes. Due to it's geography, the bottom of the valley is suceptable to flooding, which isn't an uncommon scenario in the South's hilly Piedmont region. :frown:

Ivan has slowed down, which is very unfortunate. Looks like I'll get some remnants of Ivan Sun.

I just read this excerpt from the NY Times.
"In trading Tuesday, Hurricane Ivan was blamed for a rise in crude future prices. Analysts warned that regardless of where in the Gulf of Mexico the hurricane made landfall, its size was sure to threaten many of the oil rigs and platforms off the coast of the United States. Several rigs in the Gulf of Mexico have been evacuated and production halted as Ivan made its way north."
Here's a link to the article, if your interesting. It mostly talks about OPEC, not Ivan's impact oil prices, tho. Btw, you'll need a NY Times registration account to read it.

Yeah it'll probably flood and there'll be some high winds and a couple of tornadoes around here but that's about it. If anything, everybody should be hoping that WongBa is OK, he lives in Mobile directly in the path of the storm, so he might not have a place to live in a couple of days, seriuosly.

The reminants of Francis hit Richmond and they got 11 inches of rain in one day. Entire parking lots were flooded above the cars. Several people died.
Even if you don't get a direct hit, hurricanes can be bad.
Here's an (extremely long multi-part) article about New Orleans and its hurricane prep: http://www.nola.com/hurricane/?/washingaway/index.html
Only 3 category 5 hurricanes have ever hit the US mainland, the last being Andrew in 1992.

thanks for the concern btw... i live on the third floor facing a forest. i won't get flooded, hopefully trees don't get knocked down. *prays*

I'm glad to hear you're OK WongBa...............here in Birmingham all the grocery stores are packed, schools are closed till Monday, freeways are crowded full of evacuees.....................I know most YWers live in California and NY so this is no big deal but down here in Alabama yes this is going to shut down everything for at least a week. They say if power goes out it might stay out for 2 weeks. And that's just in Birmingham which is like 4 or 5 hours away from the coast.
BTW, the title of this thread should be changed to "Alabama is fucked". Cause it's not really going to hit New Orleans, Mississippi, or even Florida. It's going straight for Alabama.

Now they're saying that the people who left Mobile and went to HSV and B'ham should've kept going and went to Tennessee, because the hurricane-force winds and flooding is going to extend all the way up to those two cities.
Oh shit...................I got friends + family in Mobile, I wonder what they're doing.
I know several people who go to the Alabama School of Math & Science down there in Mobile................I saw them up here at my HS today, they tried to escape the hurricane.
The gusts and rain woke me up at 4:30am here. It hit Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, 200 miles from here, instead of Mobile or New Orleans. It's 7am now and really windy and raining, kinda exciting. Most people here didn't leave town. All the schools are closed today so I won't have to leave the house or work!!!!!

Where exactly do you live, nola?
Here in Birmingham, it's 8:30 in the morning and there's some rain and some wind that woke me up. The worst of the storm isn't here yet - the trees in my backyard are swaying very hard.
People are still out and about even though there's already been a lot of flooding - probably about 3 or 4 inches of rain since I went to sleep last night. But I live on a hill so all of it just kinda slid downhill.

Yeah well we got more than enough on our hands with hurricane Ivan.
The news said it didn't hit Mobile directly - instead it went to Pensecola, FL just across the border from Alabama. But now they're saying the eye is over Selma right now. It will be in Birmingham by this early afternoon.
I saw pics of Mobile on TV and it is tore up.
And goddamn, you should've seen the winds just now. Wind gusts in Birmingham are at ~ 55 mph right now. I guess I should get off the computer right now.............
12 people were killed last night by this storm.
I live 200 miles from landfall, in the capitol city, instead of 250 miles like they predicted. Hurricane Frances also hit further east than expected when it hit Punta Gorda. It's still really gusty outside and we've been told not to go outside today. I know a few Pensacolians and hope they're okay.

OK I'm checking in guys. Our power went out around 9 or 10'o'clock yesterday morning and was out all day so I wasn't able to come online. Two trees fell in our yard, luckily they fell on the grass and not on our house, unfortunately I can't say the same thing for the people across the street from us, they had a fairly large pine tree fall right on their house. It was eerie going out last night around 9 PM when the sun had set and all the lights in the neighborhood had gone out.................
Also, the neighborhood adjacent to ours is close to several creeks and a lake where the dam broke so they literally had to bus out all of those people to the convention center so they could evacuate. Overall, the city got 6 inches of rain, I think they said it was.
Anyway, the flooding of the local creeks and lakes didn't affect my neighborhood cause our neighborhood sits at a higher elevation, so we had no kind of flood problems whatsoever. Just a lot of wind. Only thing I could really do all day is light up some candles, find some flashlights and play spades with the family. I guess it was a good time to get close to the rest of my family, even though for some strange reason I really wanted to go out and see exactly what the rest of the city was doing.
So all in all, here I am.....................the power is back and everything's back to normal, except now we gotta clean all this shit up in our yard. But I am enjoying this long weekend from school.

Yeah some people in that neighborhood I mentioned (East Lake) still don't have power and won't have it until next week. I heard a strange humming noise last night and I wondered what it was, turns out the people across the street from us have a generator, I knew something was suspicious when I noticed they were the only ones in the neighborhood who had lights on last night when I stepped outside.

Hiroshi2
09-17-2004, 09:25 PM
I don't know, maybe there's an El Nino going on?
Anyway, Florida kinda got a break this time. Charley and Frances hit the main part of Florida, i.e. Tampa, Miami, etc. whereas Ivan hit the Panhandle, the part of Florida that really might as well be part of Alabama. Pensecola, FL suffered the worst damage but the way I see it Alabama is the one who really got hit with this one. Florida got a break, I think at one time they said it would hit the same places that the 1st two hurricanes hit.
There's two more on the way - Jeanne and Karl. I hope they stay the hell away from here. I mean, it was fun, but still..................I had to help clean up those two trees in my backyard and that was hard ass work

back in mobile. the drive down promised lots of destruction b/c there were trees down everywhere. but once i got in the city, it barely looks like anything happened. there are a few lights that don't work and a few neighborhoods that don't have power, but overall there just isn't much to talk about. my apartment didn't even have any windows broken. seems like a lot of excitement over nothing except i know how hard pensacola got hit. was gonna post some picks, but there wasn't much worth taking a picture over...
