my boss took a suggestion from a "family" connection and tipped a dude on a street to take them into a warehouse where the product seller refused him entry b/c he "looked like a cop." if he had gotten in, i'm sure he could have gotten a pretty good deal.

i don't want to brag.
but i'm the queen of bargain hunting
and my hunting grounds are daffy's.
the thing about shopping at places like
daffy's is to know the name of reliable brands
so you know a good buy when you see one.
and to also shop in the right neighborhoods.
you can't find name brands at the penn station
location. but go to soho or the one near time
warner building. and tj max is good for household
stuff.

and jcrew has an yearly warehouse sale
in chelsea during the summer
when it's great for stocking up
on swimsuits. they're like 3 dollars a piece.
oh and winter coats. they're almost 75 percent
off.
and the little boutiques on fifth avenue
are great places to buy stuff at the
end of season. they totally slash prices.
for unique, handmade jewelry at low prices
i like this store called starfish and jelly
on st marks near the park.

and the street vendors in chinatown.
don't get me started.
but i don't shop to shop. i shop when i need
something. i don't particularly like the
activity.

I wonder around Fulton, Pitkins, Utica, and Flatbush when in Brooklyn.

I Manhattan I go to Chinatown. Besides that, I don't really shop there.

I'm also a H&M fiend. Only when they have sales, though. When I can walk out with a shirt, hat, and flip-flops for under $10.

Am I the only one that thinks that H&M's quality is just a little... substandard? It seems to be the Kmart of women's clothing (sorta inbetween Target and Wal-Mart). Not that I wear that stuff, but I've browsed in there a few times with my sister.

It's not the best quality, but it can be cheap.

hahahahaha. the tourists chicks love HM.
clothing at mexx are appropriately priced
when the items are on a sale. but overall,
i think it's just a teeny bit over-priced.
not as much overpriced as HM.
and i agree with ism. my god.
the clothes are way over priced there.
especially now.
when it first opened it nyc
the prices were very reasonable.
i think they hiked up the prices after it
became very popular.
it's mostly for trendy stuff that doesn't last
very long. something you wear for one season
and chuck.

I won't buy clothing there, but I will buy accessories. Maybe one trendy item, because spending lots of money on trendy things is lame. But you're right. Clothing there is totally substandard. That polyester knit they use on most things is just crap.

You can say that again!

The last time I was there was to get a cheap white shirt and tie for an impromptu wedding later on that night, which happened to be a godsend. Trying to find a plain white shirt that wasn't fashion-y, like little needless frills on the chest and cuffs, shit like that, was a little chore. Everything else there sucks, mostly if you're a guy. It's a lot better for women to shop there.

Better to hit the sale section at Banana Republic. In fact, just tramp around any store for their sale/clearance racks...check the Time Out New York weekly for the fashion section on which stores are having sample sales and XX% blowouts on their entire stock. There be nice stuff, if you can get it.

bloomingdales. they have invitational sales like 40%off men's european designer wear and if you know a bloomingdales employee it can be tacked on with their 20/20 discount during a certain weekend(s) of the month.

and the individual designer sample sales might yield you some good buys but not all the time.

sample sales suck ass.
it's a way for companies to discard their
crappy stuff from 5 years ago.

Fake is fine so long as it's real cheap.

OK, if you're shopping for yourself and go to chinatown, you can get cheap jewlry, handbags, watches, scarves and accessories. A nice looking watch will cost you between $5 and $15.

If you are looking for cheap gifts for lots of friends and relatives, go to the wholesale district (around 31st to 22nd streets and between 6th and 5th aves I recall). Remember that $5 watch I was talking about? You can get a box of 12 for about $20 to $30.

This is where the unlicensed street vendors go to get their product. Poor guy hops off a boat in the new world. He's only got $50 on him. If he's smart, he goes to the wholesale district, buys a bunch of fake rolexes for $50 and selles them for $10 - $15 each. he can make a $100 to $150 in a day.

I guy I've seen for years has a special spiel. He goes to you and tells you he has an authentic rolex for $20. You brush him away, not interested. He comes back and whispers, "Stolen." and gives you a wink.

I've never bought from him, but I thought it was a good spiel. The guy has been doing it for 5 years and approached me twice.

Everyone raves about Century 21.

Iono. I suppose the prices are really good if you are into name brands. But if you are like me and couldn't care less whether your shoes are from Italy or Little Italy, it's not that big of a thing.
