I've never highlighted or colored my hair so people always think I was born in Asia and from Asia until I start talking. It seems that most American-born Asian women have had their hair highlighted or colored at some point in their life or presently. What percent do you think have had their hair highlighted or colored?

pretty high, just as it's pretty high for all women in general. i know very few women who haven't done some kind of coloring to their hair at least a few times, regardless of race.

i've highlighted and streaked my hair a few times before, but i haven't done it in three years. never colored it completely though.

a lot of girls in HK also highlight or colour their hair, but usually a brownish tone, unless they're some teenagers out to look different, then we're talking about all ranges of colours, natural-looking or not.

i went to a spa-salon for the first time in my life this week and the hairdresser suggested caramel highlights for the fall and red highlights in the spring. i probably won't do it although the caramel was an unconspicuous dark brown.

I think even most Asian American guys have colored/dyed their hair at one point or another. I've dyed my hair with brown streaks before but ultimately I decided i still preferred black. Didn't really have anything with wanting to look white.

Gumby, you're such a whitephile. Stop fetishizing the white womens.

the first time i had it highlighted was when i was six years old and on vacation in hong kong. my dad's godsister thought it would be fun to highlight my hair. i got a bob and a little tail, too, like anita mui.

from what i've seen, probably 90% or more of japanese women (in japan) and taiwanese women in taiwan
and something around that for asian-american women

here's a suggestion if you want to stand out from other asian women: don't dye your hair
omg! im a genius

the first time i highlighted my hair i was in 10-years-old, in 5th grade. it was for wacky hair day.

9 years later, i still have dyed hair. i'm in the process of growing it out now, though.

I've highlighted my hair a while ago. The change was subtle. I liked it. I think I'll try to go for bold, fire-engine red streaks next time.

i've only highlighted my hair when i was 18, 21, and just 3 or 4 months ago. You can't notice anything dyed in my hair at all now. when i was 18, it was a light brown. hideous. =)

I don't like asians with highlights. It's unattractive. If I want a white woman I'll be looking for a white woman. It may not be an "effort" to but usually, especially white females looks that way and it is a turn off. Not to mention Asians with light hair tend to look bad. Usually. Not all. I'm sure some of them can pull it off. I like younger ladies with the different colors (blue, purple and such) older ladies should not do that.

Every day I'm asked "where I'm from" and it gets tiring. If I have dark brown or red colored hair people will know I'm American-born and stop bothering me.

no that is really not true. a lot of girls in Asia (at least from my own knowledge, Chinese girls) dye or highlight their hair. but most usually they do a brownish tone.

but you get asked where you're from everyday?

Yes. I'm in the public every day. It's usually men. I'll get asked three times in a day.

Well, as people in general gain more experience with the Asian population, they'd learn to tell the difference between FOBs and AAs. (We've reached this point in M'sia for a long time). Of course, they would then be accused of having an Asian fetish for knowing too much.
