Better get ready for the Koreans, they want to claim China's northeast and are making a big deal out of this Kogoryeo issue.

Old news. And I believe it was China who escalated this nonsense in the first place. This issue is being discussed because Beijing and Seoul have nothing better to do with their time but squabble. In the grand scheme of things it matters little.

it's a useless waste of time and money on the part of the Chinese government.
but recently they've "officially" agreed to back off. i'm not sure it'll really amount to much in reality.

Behind the campaign, China fears that one day the two million ethnic Koreans in northeastern China will support a "greater Korea" that will spill over modern borders.
ahh..... is this the writer's opinion? a little mention of who or where he got this idea from would be nice. what kind of journalism is that? i guess this is why i don't read NY Times.

Well...I've read from more than a few articles (many with Korean sources) reporting that this is indeed the motives suspected by Korean lawmakers or historians as well regarding why the heck China is doing this in regards to fear of a united Korea and the issue with the large number of ethnic Koreans residing in the northeastern region of the country. Obviously, however, such fears hardly justify the irresponsible distortion on China's part.
With that said...I pretty much think all this talk about friendly relationships between Korea and China (or anywhere in Northeast Asia for that matter) is bullshit...maybe I'm just too cynical on this matter. As far as I can tell...the general attitudes between Koreans and Chinese (in Asia) are tolerant and superficial at best and ignorant or hostile at worst...that's just the way it is in terms of international relations often times...you're either looked down upon and/or tolerated (if seen as inferior) or feared and hated (or admired, but that also comes with a tinge of jealousy or envy). The Chinese in the eyes of Koreans were probably tolerated with an attitude of indifference or minor interest before, but now the Chinese government has just given them a reason to hate or plant more seeds of hostility.

Whatever. If they try to take it, we'll just confiscate all their 2008 Olympic medals.

You saying that about Chinese or Korean?

You saying that about Chinese or Korean? It's not as ambiguous as the grammar would suggest: which country is hosting the 2008 Olympics and which country has built up a mini-reputation for mewling about being "cheated" out of Olympic medals?

Korea isn't trying to take anything here. that area already is party of China. and most historians around the world agree that Koguryo was a Korean nation.

China needs to get the Amur region back [Russia stole them], it's part of Manchuria and Russia purposely blocked the outgoing sea route for upper Manchuria.

There are tons of land disputes which have occurred over the centuries and with most of them nothing happened, why should this be any different? Territories will be conquered and taken, I highly doubt that any nation would just handover land like that. Anyways, I doubt SK will even boycott china, like the end of the article said: China is SK's biggest economics trader.
