i ate at buffets most of last week with my white colleagues. we were on a week-long training course. the hotel we were staying at served lunch and dinner as buffets. it was kind of funny because while they had maybe 3 or 4 clams/mussels on their plates, i was bringing back plates with nothing but clams or mussels.

what's your buffet-eating strategy?

there's a lot of buffets springing up around the south land in orange county right now. like everytime i go home, my dad's located a new place. he loads up on seafood though. he brings back huge plates of lobster legs and crab. it's interesting. is seafood the way to go?

we rape the seafood (not that stir fry shit), sushi/sashimi, peking duck and prime rib section dry.

when at buffets, skip the carbs, this includes rice, noodles, bread, etc. These are only fillers and does not provide you with the best bang for your buck. Go directly to the meats, seafood, and anything that looks remotely expensive. Always stuff yourself.

I find the few foods I like at the buffet and then just tackle those.

Usually most of the food is crap and there are just a few things that are palatable.

I also go for the foods I never had before.

I don't like to eat at buffet restaurants unless my colleagues drag me with them.

Although there are some places that I would go to like 1.) Fogo De Chao, an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steak house, 2.) this Japanese buffet in the NE side of Houston, and 3.) a Chinese buffet called China Bear in Sugarland (S. of H-town) where a few of my friends ran into Yao Ming and his crews one day. (And yes, Yao Ming has an entourage also.)

My strategy is simple: eat the expensive stuffs that I like as much as I can and suffer the consequence later.

eat the most expensive food first...sushi...seafood...and then eat some meats..i'm a meat lover...just don't eat any rice!

Wow. I've never actually been to a buffet before. But now I know what to do in the event that I attend one of these things.

I don't treat buffet dining as a tactical exercise. I eat what I want to eat...one reason why I rarely find myself at a buffet.

Whenever my family and I go out for a buffet, we naturally horde all the expensive shit in order to get our money's worth. Last time my brother and my dad practically scraped half the entire seafood section onto their plates ^^ Er....I guess that's not something to be proud of.

I look for the expensive stuff, but also stuff I've never eaten before.

I don't gorge-out on it, because I want to maintain a diet. So, it's probably mostly the vegitables and fruits with a small portion of the fancy stuff.

I kind of judge a buffet by its fruit and vegitable offerings. A good buffet has a good mix.

Is that an Asian thing? Looking for the most value out of a buffet and making sure you eat enough to justify the price? And find the most expensive stuff and eat that? Or do other people do it too?

I love buffets, a wide range of variety of foods (for the most part) for one price! Although, the only downside is that it's probably not the cleanest and most sanitary place to eat at. I know I should go with the strategy of eating all the expensive foods first (sushi to lobster/ Alaskan crab legs) but I'm a carb-loving junkie! I always go for the mussels, lo mein and General Tso's chicken balanced with the green beans...damn, all this talk is making me hungry. It's really funny to see how the non-Asians eat just the fried rice and chicken while the Asians typically just eat the crabs and sushi.

The best buffets are at casinos. They cost $25+, but they're worth it. I went to this one buffet at a casino in Biloxi, MS that had better food than any sit-down restaurant I've ever been to.

There was all-you-can-eat lobster and all-you-can-drink alcohol!

Of course, there was all you can eat desert. The carrot cake was off the hizzie! They even had creme brulee and cheesecake, which were better than any others I've ever had. Them desert's cost would $5 at any sit-down restaurant.

I almost decided not to gamble to just sit there and eat. It was pretty rough trying to gamble and have fun after going wild on that buffet. I love me some casino buffet.

Can you get a good buffet for under $20, if not $15?

How much of that stuff is really fresh, though?

And as far as fruits go, isn't there anything else to be served other than cantelope, honeydew or watermelon?

I must be cheap. I'm used to spending $7-$10 and rarely $15 (if there's seafood).

The food at the casino was hella fresh -- as fresh as it gets, too good to be true.

And as far as fruits go, isn't there anything else to be served other than cantelope, honeydew or watermelon?
Hmm, never thought about that. Buffets usually do just have melons, as far as fresh fruits goes. The casino (in Biloxi) had fresh pineapples. I remember wondering how they could serve them. I figured since New Orleans, a major port city, is down the road they could get frequent shipments of pineapple. I was impressed. Now, if there was fresh mango I would have really been impressed.

A side note, it was a pleasant surprise to find out that the manager of the casino's buffet area was Asian (Chinese). I'm thinking it was his idea to have an Asian bar (Sushi, stir-fry, fried-rice, Lo Mein, etc). Also, a significant percentage of the staff was Asian, mostly Filipino.

Same here and I don't even like spending that much.

I don't eat a lot when I eat out and I hate most of the food at most of the buffets I've been to.

I like the Old Country Buffet chain and their BBQ beef ribs. Usually run out minutes after they put them out.

Old Country Buffet, Contry Buffet and Hometown Buffett are all the same chain and menus are similar.

The breakfasts look good, but I've never woken up early enough on a weekend to take advantage of them.

Of the chinese buffetts, the good ones have great sefood and I usually go for the spareibs, mussels and fried fish.

Here's something to make you think twice about buffet: unwatched kids.

Was going for some sliced pineapple for an after dinner treat. And there were these two kids putting everything in their plates that could barely fit. Well, the sliced watermelon didn't quite fit.

One piece fell to the floor. What does the kid do? Of course: he puts it back into the sliced watermelon bowl.

I said to him, sarcastically, "I don't that goes in there."

He says, "Oh. Where?"

"Maybe on the bused dish counter."

"Oh."

So, what does he do next? He attempts to grab another slice of watermelon. And what does happens to that one? It drops.

So, he decides to grab the sliced watermelon that he dropped and put into the watermelon bowl, and tells me, "Hey grab that one." The one on the floor.

  :frown:

I told the host. He wasn't too happy.

Last buffet I went to I stocked up on this tiny fish. It's the size of your pinky, fried, and filled with caviar. They go for about 5 dollars for 3 fishes in Japan.

Definitely got my money's worth. And the best part is that nobody knows about this fish.
