Well, clearly i'm a little late here, seeing as how this was posted months ago. But I just wanted to say that this is an incredibly beautiful poem. I don't have anything constructive to say, really, but just...wow, I love this poem.

Yes, I agree. But that beautiful collage of SWK's parents is somehow oddly concluded with this Monkey Fist signature.

hahha wow, i didn't think anybody noticed this.
the piece is really about two young people setting out and just going through life together, and it's inspired by my parents.
when my parents met, my father was only 16 and my mother was only 14.

wow, that's a pretty touching poem.

are those pics of your parents? Looked pretty sharp back in the day. :)

yeah those are my parents
it was an interesting time in HK when they were growing up. their generation was born right about or after the end of the civil war in China. nearly everybody their age that they knew had parents who had escaped from mainland China. so they were actually 1st generation HKers, while their parents were immigrants. they had cultural-generational gaps not unlike those that 1st generation asian americans have with their immigrant parents. i think this is at least partly why immigrant parents from HK seem to be more relaxed and easy-going than the way that other asian americans describe their households as being really stringent. they were eager to embrace english and western culture, while their parents were extremely out of touch with all that. to add to that, they came of age in the 60s and 70s. my father listened to the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. he used to know all the words of the Beatles' songs by heart, but he had no idea what they meant. hahhah! the unique cultural makeup of how HK is such an infusion of Chinese and Western cultures is in large due to my parents' generation's making.

Nice poem tho. It's interesting and refreshing to know that it is possible for people to stay together after meeting at such a young age.
