i'm kind of afraid that the ability to cook the numerous chinese dishes, and especially concoct all those chinese soups, will be lost through my generation because i haven't yet taken the time to learn them. even when i was in HK, i only met maybe one person (a girl) that can really cook as many different things as my parents. and i have a feeling that some of this cooking ability was already lost in my parents' generation. my grandmother makes her own tofu!

man, none of my relatives can cook chinese food. except my uncle's wife.
actually i worry about losing lots of traditions. like what to name my kids in Chinese? most of my relatives are illiterate in Chinese, not to mention they don't really know what our generation names are supposed to be. the one guy who actually knew all this stuff, my uncle, been gone for a while. so now i'm the only one left to pass on most traditions. and for the most part i'm just gonna be BSing it.

oh that's great. i was considering making my own tofu last month. now i can rocket from fobabee and mother hen to grandma in one step.
I'm too thin blooded to worry about Japanese traditions not being kept in the family. But even my family in Japan doesn't do too much in the way of anything terribly traditional. Except one Japanese cousin who keeps track of the Ishii family tree. On the other hand I was pleasantly surprised to hear one of my younger (eurasian) cousins wants to study in Japan.
I'm not too worried about Chinese traditions, names or language for my kids. Everyone in my husband's family is very fob/traditional - it's just me as a foreigner struggling to keep up with language, cooking, etc.

Awwww comfort. Well if it makes you feel better any wifey that would let her husband install a stripper pole in the house is cool in my book.
Oh yeah topic: I don't know actually. I know how to cook, because my mom mad me learn so I wouldn't starve to death. But, I just order in or take out majority of the time now. I used to be murderous in the kitchen in college, but got tired of cleaning up.
I think I am most afraid of my children not being able to speak mandarin if I ended up marrying someone that doesn't speak it.
Hahah and HH's signature is funny. I have this craving for wings from Pluck You now.

I can't speak any of the Chinese languages, I can't cook worth shit (I still have time to pick that one up...I hope). Hell, I don't even know my full family background. Guess I'd best start asking lots of questions...

I should and want to learn Mandarin (or Shanghainese, just 'cause it's my dad's native tongue), but it's just a matter of finding the time and discipline to do so. I would've taken classes in undergrad but those mutherfuckers who basically know the language inside and out and take the classes for easy grades just make it impossible for those who really have no foundation in the language whatsoever 'cause the teachers just up the pace. Maybe I'll go to Chinese school with my kids...??

I got you confused when you and AB were sporting the bald head. When I first came to YW and the way you two spoke/posted sounded like you guys were realted, kinda how like me and my bro talk.

It's funny 'cause I work out in K-Town and I'm always running into people who think I'm Korean until the first word out of my mouth is in English. Then they're like, "Are you...Chinese?" It's all good, so long as no one gives me grief for being what I am.

didn't have a chance to take classes in law school? or is there just no room for that?

A few people I knew tried to take Korean language classes during law school (I knew at least one Chinese dude who was taking Korean so he could better mack on the Korean chickies...that guy was kinda slimey). That lasted all of, what, half a semester? I imagine Chinese would be even more of a mouthful, so to speak. It's not like law school takes up all that much of your time, but when you have free time, taking more classes doesn't really sound all that appealing. 'sides, I imagine language classes at 'SC wouldn't be all that much better than at UCLA. Or did you mean take classes outside of school?

Hahaha! Nah, I wouldn't mind picking up some Korean so I could better prey upon Korean women myself. But this dude was straight slime.
