FUNK LEGEND RICK JAMES: 1948-2004
August 6, 2004

The creator of the hit "Super Freak" RICK JAMES has died, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to ET. No details regarding his death were immediately available and the investigation is ongoing. The 56-year-old funk star was best known for his 1981 hit "Super Freak." He later fell victim to a crack cocaine addiction that led to a conviction for assaulting and holding a woman against her will. In 1998, James suffered a stroke. Just two months ago, James took the stage to receive a special ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in Beverly Hills.

Oh damn, this is unbelievable. I mean, he was old, old in the sense he was before my generation, but at the same time way too young to die. I know he had that crack addiction, I wonder if that's what caused his death?

It's all over the place, now.

Says he died of "natural causes".

Isn't he too young to die of natural causes?

Well, no. The average life span of a black man in America is 62.

I've known quite a few people who died in their late 50s and 60s because of "natural causes".

Besides that, now that I think about it - I've seen people who were as young as 25 die of "natural causes".

One of the local DJs at the rap station down here died a couple of years ago, he was like 25 and he died in his sleep and no known cause was ever concluded for his death, so it was deemed as "natural causes". He just went to sleep one night and never woke up, no drugs, no foul play, none of that.
