I caught the movie last week and I'm sorta confused about the character. I remember Michelle Phfeiffer's character in Batman Returns and also from seeing Catwoman in Batman cartoons. If my memory serves me right, they're different women from Halle Berry's portrayel. Is there more than one Catwoman? If so, why?

The original is Selina Kyle, but there are others, kinda like there's more than one Green Lantern, more than one Batgirl, etc. Various ones just take on the persona.

that's according to the movie. Tim Burton invented the mysterious cats who bring a woman back to life to avenge her death in Batman Returns (I guess because he liked more interesting, gothic origin stories than a Gotham socialite cat burglar with a penchant for funky costumes). The creators of Halle Berry's Catwoman used that origin story but one-upped it with the addition of superpowers, and said that their Catwoman was one in a long line of Catwomen (kind of like that there is only one Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, but there have been many slayers).

In the comics, there is only one Catwoman, Selina Kyle. She has no superpowers, like most of the Bat-people, and just likes to dress in costumes to steal pretty things and try and attract Bats' attention. In the Silver Age universe, she eventually has a daughter with Batman, who becomes Huntress, but that universe was ended and isn't the current DC universe.

Patience Price is supposedly in the same universe as Selina, when the cat lady shows her the shots of eariler catwomen there's a quick glimpse of michelle pfiffer's from batman returns, though throughout the comics, she never looks the same twice.
