Anyone catch Amish in the City on UPN? OMG, that was great TV. It's like Real World except 4 out of 10 people are Amish. The rest are your usual suspects. One (non-Amish) girl is this vegan girl, but she is kind of extreme, as she thinks cows are from outer space. But one funny line from her, as they were shopping at the super market, and debating whether to buy eggs: "Those are chicken abortions..."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...
But it is pretty interesting seeing these Amish people experiencing all these new things. I'm also learning a lot about the Amish.

i had a fascination for the amish when i was in grade school. i read a lot about them after seeing a brief article in a girls magazine. i didnt watch the show tonight though. im not big on reality tv anymore.
how did the amish in the series justify embracing the modern world when their lifestyle is against it? besides the fact that teenagers get to take a fling...but i think the ads showed an amish adult?
From what I understand, part of the Amish culture allows you to leave at a certain age to experience the outside world. Some come back, and some don't, proving those who come back really understand... something, I suppose. I haven't seen the show so I am assuming the Amish are those who reached that age.
With that said, I think it's unfair to them to have them cohabitate with such extreme people, and be displayed as naive freaks, but I suppose they're somewhat safer on the show than they would be alone. If I messed up any of the details let me know.

yeah, thats what i meant by fling. they have a period of freedom before they decide whether or not they wanna go back and be baptized.

I saw pieces.
Some of those city roommates are jerks. Ignorant.
I really liked watching the Amish roommates walk on the beach for the first time. And I really liked watching that guy who teaches kids how to swim.
But other than that, the show seemed like a bore.

Setting: The Supermarket
Amish 1: "I think we need to pick up some eggs for breakfast."
Amish 2: "Yes, gotta have the eggs."
Stupid Vegan girl: "Eggs are so unhealthy because they're high in cholesterol."
Amish 2: "Abraham Lincoln had eggs everyday for breakfast."
Stupid Vegan girl: "Yea and I bet he died before 35."
Amish 2: "Ummmmmmm, yes but not from that."

Abraham Lincoln did not die before he turned 35.

Abraham Lincoln did not die before he turned 35.
That's not the point. What made the exchange funny was that the girl didn't know Lincoln was assassinated.

from what i've heard, most of them go back
to the amish way of life.
the different characters on the show makes
for a good reality show. what was the fighting
about? i missed that.
"Those are chicken abortions..."

So, are they just following young Amish through Rommspringah (or how ever that's spelled) where they are required to go off into the world of the "English" and decide for themselves if they want to adhere to the Amish way of life?
What city did they dump them in?
I meant to watch, but ended up enjoying the movie we watched for Nerd Night so much, I forgot all about it.

Last year I visited Pennsyvania Amish country for an afternoon. Stopped by this tourist mall, and was looking at a straw hat in a store. I liked the style, and the price seemed reasonable. When I looked at the label inside, it said that it was made in China. (No wonder the price was not too expensive.)
[Ultimately, I decided not to get the hat because I figured that I might not wear it that much and could easily lose it... I always seem to lose a glove or two every other winter.]

OK, when I first posted in this thread, I hadn't actually seen it, but since I had nothing to do tonite, I just got through watching it..............................and i agree with nonameriasian.................some of those city kids are assholes. All I could think to myself was those same little punk ass white people saying "ugh I don't want to share a room with those Amish" or "those Amish dress funny" would be the same kind of people thinking (if not saying) the same thing about somebody like me just because I'm black, or if I still had a 'fro, look at me funny, and say stuff like "I could accept you as a person more if you didn't have an afro", know what I mean?
Though I have to admit it's a bit funny seeing those Amish people in that enviornment, I can sort of sympathesize with feeling like an outcast like they did, just because of who you are.
