Most of the press shots of the Carrera GT are taken in the desert with the background nothing more than a blur. The desert may be the only place you can find enough empty road to drive this new 558-horsepower missile. That, and the Bonneville Salt Flats. After all, with the power to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, the GT will be blasting through the next intersection while most traffic is just moving off the line.

Before sports car enthusiasts get overheated, they should know that it will be 2003 before they can get their hands on the Carrera GT. And that is if the car is even made available to the public (or that fraction of the public with the funds to buy what Porsche calls a "supreme sports car of the highest conceivable caliber.") It was introduced at the Paris Motor Show this fall with strong hints that it will be the next offering from Porsche. According to press material, only a few small steps remain before production is initiated.

In the meantime, motorists can salivate about the prodigious performance promised by this 5.5-liter, V10 engine machined from a blend of exotic alloys and coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox by a racing clutch. The mid-engine placement contributes to an exceptionally low center of gravity. Power is delivered to all four wheels, which measure 19 inches up front and 20 inches in the rear. Super-light magnesium rims improve handling while large ceramic disc brakes provide exceptional stopping power.

Overall, the Carrera GT looks long, sleek and futuristic. This comes, in part, from the headlight units, which feature bi-xenon gas discharge lights. These headlights look like giant camera lenses. Porsche points out that these are the only headlights that can generate both the low and high beams at the same time.

Any car that's going to push the 200-mph barrier should have good aerodynamics. The GT's designers have paid special attention to the car's handling at near-flight speeds. The underfloor of this sports car is smooth, providing much-needed sticking ability as the mph's climb. More downforce is provided by air guidance ducts in the front section. Air flow has been routed to cool both the engine and brakes. Large intakes are visible, below the headlights, scooping air for the front brakes. Another intake port is just aft of the doors to cool the rear brakes and feed fresh air to the hungry engine.

Moving to the rear, the back end is rounded with an integrated spoiler, which deploys at speeds above 74 mph to improve aerodynamics. Twin oval exhaust pipes peek out from under the low-slung car. Inside, out of view, the gas tank is situated behind the passenger cell, evenly distributing the weight over the four wheels whether it's full or empty.

With the massive speeds this car can reach, one has to ask that frightening question: What would happen if you piled into something at high speed? Safety features include a bodyshell based on a carbon-fiber structure that is both lightweight and strong. A "cage" is created around the occupants by combining transverse bars with high-strength aluminum profiles. Driver and passenger airbags, along with side-impact airbags — specially designed for convertibles — protect the chest, hip and head areas.

Porsche's plan is to build only 500 of these super cars over the life of production. If it is added to the Porsche stable, the German manufacturer, whose name is synonymous with racing and sporting machinery, would directly challenge Ferrari and Lamborghini. The rumored $315,000 price tag would push the cost envelope as well.

While Carrera means "race" in Spanish, few will be foolish enough to challenge a car that will look, and perform, like this amazing sports car from Porsche.

The car is fucking sweet. I think I read that it's going to have a removable hard top. If it (the top) looks like the one in the spy pictures, that's a huge improvement over previous spy shots I've seen...

I can't wait to see one of those things on the freeway so I can rev on it and see what it does.. hehe. duma!

The Carrera GT has been highly anticipated ever since its debut during the car show route. Porsche will finally have a true high end roadster.

I'd like to see the new Porsche SUV fly off a high cliff somewhere. That'd be cool.

I hate SUV's because 90% of them never go off the road. All these idiots driving SUV's in the city 100% of the time should be slapped with a huge tax and also pay more for insurance. Due to the myth that the SUV is safer due to it's size and weight, drivers go through red lights, tailgate more, and disregard stop signs because they think they are invincible. In truth, they flip over more than a car, can't stop as well as a car in general, can't make an emergency lane change as well as a car in general, have less impact absorbtion than a car in general, block the view of other drivers, suck too much gas, etc.
