Last few --
Missing. Starring Tommy Lee Jones. Sucked. Slow and painful.
Basic. Starring John Travolta. Ending sucked. DVD commentary unintentionally explains why it sucked, too.
Hellboy. Starring Ron Perlman. Liked it a lot. Needed to be more dark.
Gothika. Starring Halle Berry. Liked it a lot. DVD commentary honest about jail cell scenery choices, describes Ms. Berry as a nice person.

Over the weekend I watched:
Boomerang. Hilarious, except for the throwaway "ding dong dun chow fang, That's Korean for I thought you were going to rob my store!" joke.
Pitch Black, re-watched so a friend could see it. Still a great piece of sci-fi horror.
Fist of the Red Dragon. Donnie Yen. Is. So fucking. Cute.
Happy Accidents. Eh. Very 90's.
Up next: The Crime of Padre Amaro and Happy Tree Friends: Third Strike

You too! I just finished it last night. The Emprie Strikes Back rock!
Planning to watch within a few days:
Return of the Jedi,
The Thin Red Line, or
Rounders
what didn't you like about the storyline?
it's so whimsical.* Amelie's mother gets flattened by a suicide leaper. This has no bearing on the rest of the movie whatsoever.
* Characterization is done as follows:
1) Zoom in very slowly on the person
2) Describe something they like
3) Describe something they don't like
4) Go no deeper, and play on whatever single dimension you chose (hypochondriac, psycho stalker, etc.)
* Apparently, France contains no persons of color.
* Let's play "Let's be condescending to blind people!" (the scene where Amelie drags the blind man around with a 30-second narration and leaves him wondering what just happened.)
So Amelie is a bit of a dreamer. She thinks about all the couples who are having orgasms. 15. So. Is this movie about the isolation she feels, in this city of millions? Well, no. Through a complete coincidence she uncovers a boy's time capsule, and hands it to fate to decide whether or not she does good deeds or bad deeds. Fate decides she'll do good deeds.
Fantastic! Who knew she had so much creativity and ingenuity? Swap the doorknobs, how cute! But. How is tormenting this guy a good deed? Just because he busts on Lucien, willfully creating negative karma is somehow negated? Okay, so this movie isn't about karma. Or is it?
She falls in love with a guy. She doesn't know him!
Of course, Amelie is functionally retarded and can't bring herself to tell this guy she's interested. She leaves notes and clues around. It's like junior high school. Except in the tourist section of France. Where there are only white people.
She's helping all these other people. But who will help Amelie? The painter doesn't want to offer anything other than that advice. Amelie sure isn't helping herself. In fact, no one does.
BUT.
Through COMPLETE and UTTER SERENDIPITY the guy SUDDENLY falls in love with her and they live happily ever after. It's not even a Deus Ex Machina since there is no Deus or Machina. Whiskey Foxtrot Tango. The End.
What the hell was the point of this movie? Of course, going by the French title, I can't expect much from a story about someone's "destiny." Destiny doesn't have to be logical. Destiny just happens. A cow could have crashed through her roof and crushed them to death and it would have made just as much sense. So there is no point to this movie!
I'm not sure what this movie is saying. "Keep dreaming and things will JUST HAPPEN?" Maybe it's a fable for fatalists. I'm just not one of those.

I just saw a Japanese movie called, "Versus". Oh, man... it rocked!
Campy as hell, but very entertaining. It's up there with "Evil Dead 2", as one of the coolest campy/comedy/horror flicks around.
It's kind of like a live action Japanese cartoon, with the Yakuza fighting zombies. They're not really running away from the zombies, like we're used to seeing in horror flicks. These macho bastards stand and fight, while seemingly enjoying the kill. Very over-the-top characters and comedy that makes you slap your forehead.
Another cool flick that I saw at the Toronto Film Festival was "Rahtree: Flower of the Night". It's a Thai film, that's a horror/comedy. It was a rollcoaster ride and yes, it was actually scary. The director was in the audience too, which was ultra cool. He was there to see what the international audience would respond to the film, in preparation for the sequel that he's making. If anyone can get their hands on a copy, please do so. It's totally worth watching.

After that, I thought it might have some sort of subversive message to it all, but it got really mediocre....but the DVD which I got in Chinatown, most likely a cheap copy, started fucking up on the last third of the movie so I don't know how it ends...dammit...even though it sucks I still wanna get my $5.99 worth! hmm. Well, I was expecting a bit more of a developed story. I'm really in to epic battles and campaigns, and I thought Li's character was going to be the true HERO of all of China's conquests. But instead, and to my dismay, the movie revolved around an assassination plot... all in all, i felt a little shortchanged.
But I loooooved the colors in the movie. I especially loved how for each version of the stories, different wardrobes and colors were used. Absolutely beautiful.

I watched the first disc and was vibing the style of direction. Shin Ha-Kyun is amazing as the deaf/dumb guy. There's also this undercurrent of dark humor about it all, another plus. I'll probably re-watch it since I was half-sleep during some of the slower scenes (3rd movie of the night) but yeah, a few scenes of grislyness popped up here and there as a harbinger of what's to come. Better not be eating my dinner at the same time, eh?
As far as violence is concerned...well, Korean joints tend not to pull any punches, but after seeing that French movie "Irreversible" in the theaters, I think I could probably sit thru anything!

Btw, the ending reminded me of that same tactic used by Sofia Coppola in 'Lost In Translation' at the end between Bob and Charlotte.

IZ. i never knew so many korean movies
out on DVD have english subtitles.
do you rent it somewhere or do you buy them?
I always go to Chinatown to get them on a weekly basis. As with almost everything in the world, you can find it in Chinatown and you can find it cheap!
There's several A/V stores there that sell DVDs, VCDs, old video tapes, etc.
I mainly buy VCDs and then DVDs depending on cost/quantity ratio and movie availability. The VCDs are cheaper because of lesser quality versus DVDs and minimal options (no extras and shit like that). But they're still good quality for watching flix, especially for movies you don't feel like shelling out a bundle for.
The VCDs will or MIGHT have English and Chinese subs. Since all the joints are imports, I'm guessing it's not really for the benefit of us Asiatic language-challenged non-Asian Americans per se but for the people over in Asia who can't speak/read the lingo. They will have "Chinese & English Subtitles" in small print Chinese characters on the backs of the jewel box covers. I had to teach myself how to read and look for it so I wouldn't get burned because there are some that only have Chinese subs and no English whatsoever.
The DVDs have the subs options, of course, but there are some that have been copied that aren't marketed with English subs. Also, there's a lot of Region-3 specific DVDs and unless the joint put a sticker on the cover that says "ALL" (meaning all-region), it's a crapshoot on if it'll play in your shit or not. Some say Region-3 but are all-region, some copies bypass the region thing and some are strictly Region-3. My Phillips can play most but not all.
This is why I'll go the VCD route if I have a choice, unless the DVD happens to be less than the hi-fi VCD, which is possible, or I luck into a bundle discount.
The main problem is that EVERY store, despite having el grande selections for the HK/China/Taiwanese stuff, when it comes to Korean and Japanese joints, never have the same movies stocked, nor at the same time if even. At the same time, some stores offer discounts if you buy 3 or more, 10 or more and some offer no discounts at all. Some that do have the same movies stocked will have different prices. What this means is that you'll have to keep frequenting certain stores that stock the movies you like to watch and guage on whether to buy it at that joint or hold your cash and walk down the block to the next spot to see what they have there. Once I paid for this one HK movie that turned out to be somewhat lackluster for the price. The next joint I went to had a movie I'd be looking for after reading about it in a review but I didn't have the juice to pick it up since I already spent it on that HK crap. Never again!
It's fucking mad, but it's worth it for the paydirt you can snatch if you are patient and don't mind hopping around a bit for what you wanna get.
Like, you could find a DVD of "My Sassy Girl" at one place for around $11-$15. Another place you can find a high-fidelity VCD of the same thing for $8.95. At another place, you can maybe luck into the same thing as a copied version on DVD for $5 IF you buy two other same-priced DVDs along with it. I got "Sassy" as a director's cut hi-fi VCD for $8.95 and i've seen the regular "Sassy" on DVD for more, even when it was a blatant copy with color Xeroxed jewel box labels. Nuts, ain't it? I've broke this shit down to a science now.
But as far as Korean movies are concerned, I've been nuts about it this year in particular because I missed the annual festival when it came out this summer and I've been looking for the joints that were showing then. Not only have I found most of those, but a lot of other gems that won't get play over here. Plus, when you factor in the cheapness...you really can't go wrong!
I dunno how it is at the stores in Flushing. I'm of the mind that getting anything from the "source" won't be as cheap as Chinatown goodies. There's an A/V store in Koreatown on 32nd off of 5th Ave., but they're closed by the time I get outta work. The Han Ah Rheum market next to Won Jo has a video rental section in their basement. I haven't been there in ages, though. My ex used to get shit from there but since she's outta my picture now I haven't felt like poking around...
Hopefully I didn't tell you stuff you already knew!

Some of the effects were weird. They didn't match the acting.
Like the part where cares are blowing and whatnot. There are people standing up straight.
Or the hail part. There were people standing probably not how they would in that type of situation.

Man, I just saw The Cooler last night. And talk about Bill playing a romantic lead role. Way to much nudity and sex. You don't just see his bare wrinkly ass, you nearly see a full frontal and there's a oral sex scene. These intimate scenes were necessary to the story but that doesn't mean we have to see them butt naked all the time.
I also checked out the extras and apparently this is Bill's last film playing a loser. He's had enough of playing loser roles. Will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

I just watched this too. I thought the movie was pretty dull and boring, and it seemed like nothing much actually took place from scene to scene. IMHO it was even worse than Crouching Tiger or Hero, with Crouching Tiger being the best...er....least bad (not that this says anything) ^^ On the upside, it was very aesthetically pleasing. Zhang Ziyi plays the exact same character that she does in every single one of these wuxia films, the helpless whiny damsel in distress/kick-ass bitch paradox.
I also finished the old Young & Dangerous 4 VCD. Extremely mediocre at best, but at least Michelle Reis (I forget her Chinese name, something Yan Yan?) was in it. I swear, that girl is so fyne she can look good dressed in the most tacky clothing.

I have some light-hearted fare called Control Room coming in the mail today. Synopsis courtesy of Amazon.
Startling and powerful, Control Room is a documentary about the Arab television network Al-Jazeera's coverage of the U.S.-led Iraqi war, and conflicts that arose in managed perceptions of truth between that news media outlet and the American military. Egyptian-American filmmaker Jehane Noujaim (Startup.com) catches the frantic action at Al-Jazeera headquarters as President Bush stipulates his 48-hour, get-out-of-town warning to Saddam Hussein and sons, soon followed by the network's shocking footage of Iraqi civilians terrorized and killed by invading U.S. troops. Al-Jazeera's determination to show images and report details outside the Pentagon's carefully controlled information flow draws the wrath of American officials, who accuse it of being an al-Qaida propagandist.

I just bought a bunch of old timey horror movies. We watched "The Werewolf vs. The Vampire Woman," on Monday. Twenty something more to go.

I just watched "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." It was pretty good, except that they all aged so much. They didn't look 13 like they were supposed to be. They are probably gonna look like some really old 14 year olds in the next movie as they are signed on for one more.

I have some light-hearted fare called Control Room coming in the mail today. Synopsis courtesy of Amazon.
I'd highly recommend Control Room. I haven't seen Fahrenheit 9/11 so I can't provide a comparison, but CR is a good survey of Al Jazeera's reporting.

I saw Magnolia yesterday. OK movie, but it tries too hard to say too much. It was also way too long.

watched Finding Neverland with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet lastnight. It was great... such a warm and lighthearted film. I particularly liked Johnny Dope in this movie, his command over the Irish accent impressed me.

Well, I saw most of it and then fell asleep.
I feel gypped. I was told it was a decent horror movie.

Really? I guess I'm not too familiar with his films and I'm not hating or anything, but he just comes across as the popular pretty boy of the moment (albeit a bit more muscular).
I just finished re-watching My Sassy Girl and Infernal Affairs again cause I was bored. It's funny how the impressions I get from a film the very first time can be completely different with the 2nd (or 3rd) viewing.
Ha ha, good flick.
Haha for real. For some reason, it's one of those movies that actually gets better the more you watch it. I never appreciated it as much the first time.
