i'm pretty ignorant as to how hapas are generally treated by whites. would anyone care to share the problems they had to deal with growing up with regards to this?

went to a 40% white primary school, a 100% white middle school, and a 65% white high school. most of the racial prejudice I met came from blacks and whitewashed American-born Asians who hang out in big cliques. but never really experienced racial prejudice from whites, except if I am in Chinatown talking in Chinese with friends, some white guy will always walk by and make "pretend Chinese" noises. often they're doing this on the way back to a restaurant table or bus station seat where some clueless Asian-American girlfriend is waiting for them.
also I look kinda middle eastern - if I'm walking around anywhere near a mosque, Iranians always come up to me on the street and scold me in Farsi for not going to prayers. hehe. But every plane flight I've taken since 9/11, I got pulled out of line for "random search" (I've had to fly 6 times since then). note to Dept. of Transportation: if you're gonna profile airline travellers, I can't really object in the present situation, but please learn the difference between race and skin color. trying to catch Muslim terrorists by stopping random swarthy men is gonna be about as effective as trying to catch Christian terrorists by stopping random pale men. Go to the middle east sometime - it's not all that hard to find guys who look like northern Euros with dark hair. hey, think Al Qaeda is gonna be recruiting some of them for their next secret operation instread of swarthy guys with big beards?

Wow. Were you pissed?
I honestly don't know where I stand in regards to this. On one hand, I don't want to open the floodgates for racial profiling. On the other hand, I'll be damned if another plane hits a building.

I flew many times... um... 8 times, since sept 11th. People get pulled out all the time, before boarding the plane...yeah. Dang... I flew a lot last year...it would have been 6, except I had to fly home to long island for a weekend for a internship interview... jet blue rocks.
People get pulled out a lot...after they went through the metal dectedtor..security search and shit. They DO racial profile..but they also pull off people who are carrying on a large carry-on... international students..."foreign" people. I saw this Chinese lady get pulled out.... she showed her passport so I assumed she wasn't a perm or long term resident of the states...
I on the other hand never got pulled out.. Though I had one of my bag searched...one I wanted to check in, but the dumbass ticket agent for some reason didn't, and had it sent through the x-ray machine, and made me take it with me...i donno. Anyways, the girl that searched my bag broke my mini-make up container...wansn't pleased. She coudnt' figure out how to open the clasp.. yep, these are the peeps we count on for security..
And than there are the national guards, who flirt with girls all the time... and the girls who are going "ohhh man in uniform...ohh m16"

I've flown about eight times since the terrorist attacks. I even got detained returning across from the US-Mexico border in Tijuana. it's gotten to the point that I carry my passport with me when I fly anywhere, or even drive to the next state.

I look more Caucasian, so the racism (in my head, anyway) comes from hot-shot Asian girlies whose shit doesn't stink.
Of course, when the suntan comes on, I am Mexican...

ha, the only racism i've encountered are through white people - mainly my peers and my white family. and i don't mistake any type of hostility coming from people of color as racism
love, prof. frink
that's still open for debate in another forum. I think the original question is not so much "is oppression against hapas built into societal institutions" as "what kinds of hostility have you experienced from whites." no need to start this argument over here as well.
to adjust my earlier words to avoid this debate: I experienced prejudice, or hostility, or bad vibes, or something of this nature, from blacks and Americanized Asians. very rarely from whites. even though I am regularly mistaken for Iranian by natives of Iran.

pissed? not really. this way is pretty much the only alternative to El-Al style security.

I got pulled over for one of those security checks in Japan. They were checking all non-Japanese, it was obvious. The guy telling the people to do the checks would use Japanese and say CHECK HIM, he's not Japanese! In the USA I had problems entering once cuz the immigration officer didn't believe that my face matched my name. Okay, not serious problems, but he asked me questions on the origin of my name and I explained to him that my father was a Korean-American and he looked at me funny then stamped the passport and waved me thru.
Racism I have gotten... mainly from Blacks trying to be counter-racist against whites, and from Asian-Americans who didn't consider me Asian because I don't look like I am. Jews thought I was Jewish, and would come up to me on the street on saturdays to say shabbat shalom and invite me to the synagogue in an attempt to convert a non orthodox jew into an orthodox one. Others objected to my not wearing the "Wherever I stand, I stand with Israel!" button in support for Ariel Sharon when I was working at a kosher pizza parlor. The biggest racist vibe I have gotten from whites is my first roommate in college who told me I was 1/2 american and I should act like it now and then, because I was acting like I was all Korean. The next three years of college he called me up making prank calls with a lispy voice saying he was from Gaysian magazine and he wanted to do a story about me.
Those morons at AASU didn't help me out when I asked them, when they could have used the event to publicize a number of their political agendas.

That's so weird. What a dorky thing to do.
I'd have to say that most of the discrimination / racism I get from Whites is directed at my being Asian, not at my being biracial. The ones about being biracial usually bother me more, though, because they're something along the lines of "You're not a real minority. You're half White!" - No, I'm biracial dammit, I'm not half of anything... Either that or "But you don't act Japanese!" - right, I'm part White, but when I'm around White people I should try as hard as possible to be 'other', 'cause all I'll ever be is half a White person anyway...

From the black community sorry, for the ignorance. Black people will piss on anyone, that feel they have the chance to, because whites, and everyone else do it so often.
