since this topic i made is gonna get deleted at speed options and everyone asks me this same question whose new to 240sx im gonna repost it here
Speedoptions member asked:
what is the best exhuast? I don't want a loud one, but one that still makes decent power. I was thinking Blitz Nur Spec R but I hear those are pretty loud. So what else?
i answered:
any 80mm Stainless exhaust would do. I recomend stainless piping ussually cuz the heat of the SR20det beats up the mild steel coated piping found on apex-i n1/n1 dual, greddy BL/PE/PE2/DD/ etc, and 5zigen non-miracle exhausts. dual piping 60mm also works. Bigger for a price is also availible. i recomend get sumthing u can afford thats not too loud and stainless i personally have a HKS Hiper 25th Aniv. w/ 85mm piping its not too loud and survives flaming and backfiring. If u dont care how loud HKS RAcing is unbeatable flow wise just have fun w/ 4' piping.

note list is for turbo SR20det cars but really Ka24de can take and be fine w/ any of the 80mm or dual 60mm exhausts. 60mm for a Ka24de is like worthless nearly it doesnt increase horsepower as much liek 2hp, SCC dynoed a s14 ka24de car w/ Apex-i n1 80mm exhaust and got 12 horses if i remember correct outa it. ( a quick peek at the 240sx's crap sized super crimp bent piping easily tells u why)

It looks crazy. The bad thing with silencers is that it negates just about all the HP gained by installing the exhaust (at least on the Apexi exhaust). I don't suppose it would meet the 95 db requirement w/o the silencer. I guess it takes out one or more of the cats too since it said something about not passing smog. I wish GReddy would make something that is full 304 SS with Ti muffler.
That 4" piping must be good for 800+HP levels.
I passed CA emissions levels with no cats last week. It was not on a dyno smog machine. That was cool. heh.

well S14 when u swap to SR looses its catalytic converter since the USDM uses an on manifold close coupled unit, jdm uses an under car catalyst...which most people dont get w/ clips...i seen 2 in my life time and that was off 2 s15 clips. S13 people tend to just use their under car catalyst then remove it for the S14's US models fake cat...thanks nissan NA for a fake catalyst ! =) HKS racing btw uses stock catalyst and bolts onto that.
quick facts
S13 180sx and silvia and s13 240sx have 1x under car catalyst
s14/ s15 Silvia have a single under car catalyst
s14 240sx has a close coupled catalyst and an under car dummy catalyst hallow ribbed resonator basically.
Greddy does make sumthing in that class its called the Trust TR Evolution 94mm version it has black stainless steel piping and a polished stainless steel muffler. Both units were designed in response to Apex-i's GT-spec 90mm unit. greddy/ trust TR EVO exhaust (http://www.jspec.com/greddytrevo2.html)

I wonder if anyone has dyno'ed all these exotic exhausts. I would like to see cars of different power levels and how they respond to these exhausts without the silencers and with different size piping. I don't think it would do too much good to have larger than 3"-3.5" unless the engine is pumping out 500-600HP worth of air but I'd like to see real dynos.

yah their are tests of these units in japan but u'd have to read japanese to understand them.
honestly the difference is minimal from what i remember reading one of the books, (jspec.com owner has them and when i was over at his house i browsed thru the sr20det exhaust dyno test book) . For FD3s and JZ80 supra's why dont u ask HKS usa for dyno sheets they are the ones pusing the 102mm units on the market for those cars.
in america atleast for 240sx ppl no one can really afford the 1050$ hks racing unit, 800$ greddy TR evo 2, tho their are quite a few GT specs w/ 90mm piping running around on turbo KA cars thanks to Ryan Yapp turbo 97 240sx ka24de+fmax stg. 2.
also dude silencer who runs those? My HKS hiper unit is 85mm i dont bother its pretty quiet same w/ N1 dual and Blitz Nur-spec R their all tollerable w/o silencer because they all have resonators and the turbo makes them relatively quiet. The only ones i find intolerable are Apex-i N1 single and Greddy DD and that because their loud and for the DD weird sounding since the DD uses a small primary muffer and no resonator.

I've found the HKS exhausts to be pretty quiet in general. The only bad thing about them is that they are cost prohibitive. The lower cost ones can rust, just like the GReddy units. Does your HKS unit resonate like a mofo?

yah it vibrates everything and sets off alarms like nothing, it also shakes like a mofo and it makes me wanna invest in new mounts made out of harder rubber for the exhaust system if u got a source for these holla cuz all we got is taiwanese source 15$ set + huge shipping amount like a hard rubber mount.
its pretty loud too its over 92dba definitely at full throttle but at low to mid Rpm its quiet just kinda boomy. I like it alot its piping and welding are beautiful and the stainless steel guage is alot thicker then my blitz downpipes very nice unit i recomend to all SR people. just its 780$msrp is rape.

Depending on the configuration of your mounts, you may be able to fill them with urethane. I filled my engine mounts with Shore 80A urethane and those mothers are hard as hell now. When my car had bad idle, I got a back massage from driving. It might be feasable to cut some material out from the mount and fill it with urethane to stiffen it up.
I filled all my motor mounts with the mix stuff from McMaster Carr. It costed $20 instead of $200-$300 for the TRD mounts. I'm guessing that you may be able to do that to the exhaust hangers too.

If possible, I'd rather pay $20 bux for the urethane and do it myself. Duct tape works wonders for shaping the urethane. I think there are urethane solutions that are already mixed so there is no risk of making a "bad batch" too.
