Looks like I'm the only one who did redneck sports growing up. Anyone else target shoot or dirt bike? I really don't want to own a gun (cost, resposibility, danger) but I like the sharpshooting part and right now I'm considering changing to the clay pigeon shooting (skeet?) or moving to archery. I've tried archery before and I prefer recurve to compound.
Just call me Bubba.

Yes Ms Bubba. I did a sports of the elite. I did fencing and sailing LOL and my high school was ghetto.

Aha, Mr. HH is a fencer too. I just recently got him back into it. He's at an incredible salle at the moment. Many gold medal Olympians there - says he's learning a lot and being humbled by 10 yr. olds. :)

would it count that we had target shooting as an activity one summer at camp when i was a kid? i guess i could have been alot more redneck. or up where i lived it would be hick instead of redneck. i grew up with lots of snowmobiles around me. but never owned or operated one.

I went hunting with my dad once and I plugged bambi and was crying like a little girl.
I'm thinking about getting a gun and the training needed.

Yeah, we used to shoot stuff in the desert, but never at real targets. Just cans and stuff. Did some archery, it was okay but not that much fun for me.

Yup, I own a few guns.
M700 LTR
AR15
HK USP9
I've test shot a 50BMG at over ~1200yds (range finder would not go that far). I've shot my .308 at 400-700yds. I've shot a few dime sized groups with factory ammo at 100yds on my best day (and kept the target paper).
I camp, hike, indoor rock climb. I really like skeet shooting with a 20 gauge. I can't hit a damn thing with a 12 gauge. I've shot bow & arrow. Every year I go on a camping trip where there are more than 50 guns to try.
I did a little archery at summer camp back in elementary and middle school. That was always fun. My uncle took us shooting a few times in Sac. Never killed anything, 'cept the occasional aerosol can and produce. My brother's got two MAK-90s which we've fired off in the desert and Angeles mountains a few times.

You win the Redneck Sports gold medal then. hahahaha
I've been putting some thought into going back to the range for practice. One of my friends just graduated from police academy and doesn't have that much practice with a firearm. Put some thought into a concealed carry permit too. God knows I don't want to bring a gun into my house, but I think it's brainwashing from my dad that makes me want to get the permit.
I feel funny that I feel this way because I'm female.

I'm all for concealed carry permits. The trenchcoat mafia would have gotten their asses kicked if the rest of the kids had guns. Actually, that's a joke in bad taste but you get the idea.
Bringing a gun into the house is fine as long as no one can get to it except for you when you bring it to the range. A nice heavy fire safe comes to mind.
I don't know why it would feel funny. I know someone else (that is a gal) who wants to carry also.

My dad took me to a shooting range on my sixteenth birthday... it was scary. I didn't like shooting a gun, but I totally loved bragging about it to all the guys later.
And dirtbikes rock. Oh my god. ATV's are pretty fun too, they're easier to ride, but not as fun.
What else is a white people sport...?
Anyone else surf or wakeboard?

Werd, I'm all for it, too. Most criminals who are going to do something violent with a gun have them illegally anyway, so restricting gun laws just makes it harder for the good people to protect their families. Keeping a gun in your house shouldn't be a problem as long as your kids don't know about it... and you keep the gun and the ammo in separate places! I want to say lock it up, but that might not be so convienient if some weird guy started breaking into your house.

Whoa, that's almost exactly what I wrote in another forum before. I wonder if I can find it. Doh! They erased it.
All the new gun laws in California suck. It only prevents law abiding people from getting a weapon. Criminals don't care about laws and they get their guns illegally so why should they be the only ones that are armed? All these damn politicians are wagging their gun control banners because the general public thinks guns are bad. This is stupid, especially since they were never brought up with guns, don't know how to use one and are therefore afraid of them.
If kids are around, guns should be in a locked box or safe. They should be zip tied in their containers at minimum.
Wait, this should go into the rant forum. :D

Shooting a gun doesn't feel funny - been doing it since I was five. It's the owning one as an adult and wife. Shouldn't I be baking muffins and shit like that?
I hate admitting this but I don't think my husband would allow me to have a gun in the house. Plus it's not a big deal to store it at the range. That way I don't have to cart it in with the actions open - I can just rent my eyes and ears and head straight out to plug some targets.
Been a while since I've had to clean a gun though. I'm not even sure I remember how to disassemble and reassemble. Maybe I should start up again with a revolver. Less work.

5?!? You are a lucky one, aren't you? I was about 16 or so. You can store guns at the range where you are? I hope they have a nice vault or something.
Revolvers... yes they are easy to errr open up but they are horrible to clean, IMO. I suppose it depends on which semi-auto you have though. HK's are easy... Sig Sauer's are easy too.

My dad worked in federal law enforcement, i.e. he was a narc. Plus he's a cracker redneck. I'm kidding, kind of. The guy does have a masters in Criminal Justice so I can't be too hard on him.
That was one cool thing he did. Since he had a lot of guns in the house he made sure my sister and I had thorough gun safety knowledge. He prepped us physically and mentally as well for drawing, firing and killing if it ever came to it. It instilled a healthy respect and fear of using them in me.
He did get a little too commando with me, I think. He was having make my own reloads and testing me to see if I could disassemble the Colt .45 1911A1 by touch. Looking back, I think that's a little whacked but man, that's a hell of a field weapon. Durable little mofo.
I hate shooting automatics with reloads because my experience with reloads is that they usually don't chamber correctly. Hence the revolver. Though I do shamefully admit to eyeing some of the small, sleek riotguns. Especially, IIRC, if they have a collapsible bull-pup stock.
Agreed on Sig Sauer. Mucho bucks though.

I love shooting guns off in the range or in the desert as much as the rest of you, but don't you see that this argument is flawed? True, criminals don't really care much about obeying the law and can obtain guns illegally if they need to. However, the fact that guns are still so readily available, legally, makes it all the easier for criminals to obtain them in the secondary market. Stem the supply of guns and I can almost guarantee you'll eventually see a decrease in violent crimes committed with 'em. I mean, you can't honestly say that there's no correlation between the availability of guns and the prevalence of crimes involving the use of guns, can you? Here're some statistics I came across:
Gun deaths per 100,000 population (homicide):
USA - 4.08 (1999)
Canada - 0.54 (1999)
Switzerland - 0.50 (1999)
Scotland - 0.12 (1999)
England/Wales - 0.12 (1999/00)
Japan - 0.04* (1998)
* Homicide & attempted homicide by handgun
(Data collected by Philip Alpers, Harvard Injury Control Research Center, and HELP Network)
Anyone wanna guess which country has the most lax gun control laws?
As much as I get a kick out of loading up a banana clip full of 7.62s, hearing the *cha-chick* of a rifle being cocked, and destroying produce, aerosol cans or paper targets, I'm totally for tighter restrictions on guns or even the eventual outlawing of them altogether. Of course, while they're legal, I'll take advantage of the laws, but I for one would hand over my firearm if mandated by the government without putting up too much of a fuss. But that's me.

I would be apprehensive of handing over my firearm to the government by mandate. And I'm honestly not sure why. NRA propaganda most likely. I have no problems being in countries where gun laws are really strict. In fact, I feel safer. Hmm. Something wrong here.

This will sound way sexist of me, but I think the girls that dirt bike are pretty normal but a lot of the guys are total redneck tools.
If you go to an enduro or supercross - check out the crowd. It's usually rural white dudes with goatees and baseball caps.
Maybe it's different in Cali than it is New England. You get more warm weather and surfer dudes.

Ouch.
You ever seen those hardcore guys? With the automatics guns and the CO2 tanks, strapped on their backs? Geez, my friends and I went as a group. None of us were hardcore, it was the first time for some of us. So they pitted us against these hardcore players. Here we are with the p00say pump action rifles they give you, meanwhile those guys have semi's. We got owned, 0p0p0p. I remember I was pinned in a crossfire behind a tree and they were spraying, I looked at the tree and barks were flying off from it. Those crazy rednecks :D
