So who's gonna watch? I've already warned my boss and coworkers that I'll be dragging my feet into the office for the next month or so while I catch the games late at night/early in the morning.
During the 1998 World Cup, I chartered a driver to take me from Bangkok to Udornthani. The dude stopped at a town for three hours at 1 a.m. so he could watch the Brasil vs. Holland game. This was a driver I had paid, and he wasn't going nowhere until that game was over.

China loses 4-0 to Brasil.
The game was so lopsided and China so outclassed. Painful to watch. Still have to give props to China for continuing to mount offensive plays when they were down 4 goals and still had half an hour to play.

Korea tied the US 1 to 1. Still, I think the Koreans had a poor showing -- they blew a penalty shot for cyring out loud! A penalty! That's a 99% gimme point. And then later they a clear shot just yards in front of the net and blew it way over. Disappointing performance.
Japan, however, beat Turkey 1 to 0.

Still, I'm glad they didn't lose. I heard some U.S. soccer official saying before the game that the American team shouldn't have any problem handling Korea...

Updates:
South Korea needs to tie or beat Portugal to advance to the second round.
Japan needs to tie or beat Tunisia, plus score a goal advantage to advance.
China has one more game to play (Turkey) in the first round, but likely will not advance, being burdened with two losses, six goals against and no goals for.
The US needs to tie or beat already-eliminated Poland to move on.

Damn, heard about this tie on the airplane report...i hope korea wins the next round...ahh, i can feel the racism against the portugal people if they lose to them..
I saw the korean soccer player getting a bloody cut on his face and they zoom in for the close shot....embarassing.
they even did it for that baseball player when he was hunched over crying.

too bad argentinia can't advance since they lost to sweden.
Anyone going to watch the final Korean match against portugal? I hope they win!!
Since im in korea, im going to watch it live on big screens down in the Chindae downtown area.
thaite
06-12-2002, 07:17 PM
What kind of question is that? Of course I'm gonna watch Korea beat Portugal. :?
I don't think it was embarassing for the player to be shown. Dude got hurt, they fix him up and he comes back in like a real warrior.

Well, word is that some koreans here dont want to watch it since they are nervous if korea will beat portugal or not...they want to be suprised.
Out of all the injuries in the fifa 2002 this whole week, they had to do a zoom up picture of the injured soccer player...but , yes, im glad he went back into the game. I wasn't disgrace about it, just brings back memory of the korean baseball player being zoomed in while he was crying .

China is out. No wins, or goals. Man, they suck.
thaite
06-13-2002, 01:14 AM
Well, I've watched about 90 percent of the World Cup games so far, and believe me when I tell you that there are close up on most of the players who get injured. You should see some of the stuff that happened to the players for Senegal and Cameroon.
It's human interest footage and got little to do with race.
And Byung-Hyun Kim got his redemption yesterday, (http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/0612dbacks-OL.html) in case you didn't hear. Nobody in this town holds a grudge against him.

lol, i know what you mean man. I seen the faces of soccer players who missed the damn goal...lol, should've seen their angry faces.
But, in that article about the baseball player, he was greeted by sarcastic cheers by the yankee fans and then he got out 3 guys, that shut those crowds up.
Can't wait tomorrow for that korean match...they better win.

I've watched a few matches and I have to say that I was pretty impressed by South Korea's ball handling skills. I didn't think I would get into it too much but, I seem to be getting more interested in it. One question I had for you Soccer freaks... during the S. Korea vs USA match I saw a lot of shirt grabbing and pulling and pushing... is that normal?
Anyways... go Korea!

Yes, though it seems to be progressively worse this year. It's something you can get penalized for, but it happens a lot. The Germany/Cameroon game was [i:f16506fdb5]very[/i:f16506fdb5] physical -- lots of shirt pulling, pushing and tackling going on in that one.
And Korea played a [b:f16506fdb5]tremendous[/b:f16506fdb5] game, winning 1-0 against Portugal.

I was watching the news last night and they showed these U.S. servicemen, filming themselves as they went to go watch the U.S. versus Korea play, shouting into the camera about how they were there protecting that country while getting mistreated. They then showed some Koreans holding anti-U.S. signs, heckling them.
What a bunch of crap. The U.S. wouldn't be there if they didn't help start a war.

Did anyone watch the U.S. beat Mexico last night/this morning? I have to admit, I was rooting for Mexico:)
Is it me or do the U.S. players -- excuse my French -- seem like pussies? It's like Vlade Divac taught them all how to play. Every five minutes I'd see one of them writhing on the ground with an official running over, calling a penalty on Mexico -- what's up with that?
The most important thing is winning, yes, but you don't have to win like that!
thaite
06-17-2002, 02:11 PM
I don't see how it helped out. Neither team gained any advantage from penalties or [i:b5ffda987d]malandragem.[/i:b5ffda987d]

Korea was unbe-fucking-leivable!
Japan, I'm afraid, was just having a hard time. I dare say it, but they are weak on finishing. The can move the move upfield, but once the strikers receive the ball, it's like they don't know what to do with it. Too many times I saw the Japanese strikers receive the ball with their backs to the target goal. Too many times did they take the ball far up the line, only to play it backfield. It's like they weren't confident enough to take the ball on their own through the defensive line. Japanese offense played too conservatively and not boldly enough and that was their downfall.
Korea is almost in the same boat, but not as bad. Strikers need to be more bold, or else...
And that game was incredible.

My uncle was yelling....Hit the goal !, Hit the goal! when that korea soccer player had the kick the ball with the other teammates and the italy team were lined up in front of the goal...
Good game!

To all the racisms that happened in the US against asians...this is what asians can rejoice about..the US losing..
Im proud to be Korean !
I cheered for Korean team, not american team. Even though i am Korean American.
thaite

I got a real beef with people who rejoice when the US loses.
We all cheer for our favorite team when they win, groan when they don't. But if you are an XXX-American trying to assimilate and contribute your culture to this melting pot, it doesn't help your cause to dance while Rome burns.
When the US loses, we all lose.

I've gotta say, I'm conflicted here. Maybe it's because Korea and other Asian countries have done so well this time, I'm not sure. I do root for the U.S. in the Olympics (except when it's going against Asia et al).

I'm not saying you have to root for the US over your other favorite teams, just that it's poor taste to cheer about a team losing.

Do you not consider that Team USA goes to represent all of us -- regardless of whether we're Korean, Black, White, etc ? Now look what happened to my nice soccer discussion; it's turned into a political rant.

Same here Ohtoro..i was rooting for koreans to Win , not the US.
I would like to do the same with the US, but it reminds me of the unjustice served with hate crimes against the US. IF the US judicial system does alittle better with handling cases dealing with asian hate crimes..i might soften up. But, right now..i have distaste for some american aspect.
Go Korea!
