Hairstylists' new angle: Feng shui for your head
Feeling down, out of sorts, or just plain blah? It might be your hairstyle.
Feng shui -- the ancient Chinese philosophy that your surroundings affect your well-being -- is quickly becoming the answer to a bad hair day. Salons specializing in the art -- based on the belief that the wrong hairstyle can throw off your "chi," or personal energy -- are popping up across California and South Florida.
Feng-shui-for-hair pioneer Billy Yamaguchi owns six salons in California and teaches feng-shui courses for stylists. Enrollment has more than doubled in the past six months. At Sullo Salon & Day Spa in Fort Lauderdale, feng-shui consultations have tripled in the past four or five months.
Clients at Yamaguchi's salons complete a questionnaire on colors, mood and lifestyle. A stylist decides which element -- fire, earth, metal, water or wood -- suits you and chooses a style to enhance, balance or harmonize. A feng-shui consultation and haircut costs between $85 and $250.
And it isn't just for hair: Celebrities such as Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore have had their nails feng-shuied at Yamaguchi's salons, and Boston-based Color Investment Cosmetics has launched a feng-shui makeup line.
Still, some feng-shui practitioners find the idea ludicrous. "This is a marketing gimmick," says Kartar Diamond, a L.A. feng- shui consultant. " You can't 'feng shui' a wardrobe, a hairstyle, a car or a business card."
