hmmm, they only seem to make custom t-shirts in a few colours, none of which is the colour i want, namely black.

if you just want a one-off, Kinko's can do it pretty easily and quickly.

Search google with a string like -- create own tee shirt

Check out "The Lab" link.

I'm not sure if it will come out in a black shirt, but there's a certain type of printer paper which will allow you to print the image and then transfer the image (ironing) onto a shirt. However, I think you need an inkjet printer, and it's somewhat expensive.

The Kinko's route is good, but you won't get flexibility with placement of the design. Like, if you wanted it off-center or on the shoulder or on the edge. A lot of t-shirt designs are playing around with that nowadays. It can make a nice effect if the design is good.
It's ghetto, but you might have some fun using stencils and spray paint. Some places are actually selling these with stupid logos/designs for ridiculous prices. Show 'em how it's really done!
