Continuing to play around this new site's buttons, I pressed the reputation icon on one of my posts and was told that I just received 10 reputation points.

What did I just do?

AB's lying so you'll go into a panic, clutching your chest in a manner most dramatic and suited for the stage whilst he stands by chortling with glee as you lapse into cardiac arrest from lack of YW access. :D

If I had any say it in you can be village ho and the local boy that everyone beats for fun. Hee hee!

Actually, the reputation thing is pretty interesting. Does it operate like the Karma function from the previous incarnation of the board? Or is it simply used to differentiate between good and bad posts?

Does everybody get 10 to start?

It seemed kind of unfair that achtungbaby and kasie had the same number as me so I added one. Heck, I guess I should keep pressing the button.

I don't know how I feel about this. I think it makes me feel kinda unloved.

mine keep getting lower and lower.

http://i.xanga.com/amyd0i/karmapts.JPG

first with my cum signature, i get -10. "i want cum breath so i'm gonna eat persimmons." don't you think i should get a warning before i get a -10? there's no forewarning or anything like that, you know.

second, TTchino got me to 9. and he said he did it on accident.

chris just said he adored me. and now my points are at 3.

what's the deal?

One thing: I can understand limiting continuous additions or subtractions of karma...for obvious reasons.

But it's unfortunate that you can't deduct karma and then put it back soon thereafter...for obvious reasons.

Don't know what the limitations of the feature are, but thought I'd mention that.

I think this is just a ploy to make people more addicted to yw, but it will also lead to other consquences.

- The more you post, the more chances you get to get karma points. More incentive to post.
- It also promotes homogeneity in postings (you have incentive to say what everybody else believes to get points or not to lose points).
- Points judges ideas that may not be so easily judge.
- Also it will promote class division between people who have points and people who dont.
- Power is also uneven distrubted leading to the oppression of ideas and voice of the have not people.

Fight the system.

no that is not the point, it further perpuate the system. This ranks members, by how much you "fit in". It also alienates new members because older members will have an advantage.

i give points out for effort put into constructing an argument - whether i agree with it or not. i look at whether the person has considered the counterarguments that other members have proposed, etc. etc. has nothing to do with whether i agree with what they have to say. i gave chairman_mah points before.

Can somebody have a negative karma value? If so, does that mean they get kicked out of YW?

Shower me with power and you shall find yourself adrift in karma.

First you get the karma, then you get the power, and then you get the respect!

Hey, >:^| let's join forces and start a karma dealing cartel- called the 88 Dragons! We will boost the karma of our members, hence showing new YW members that they should join us if they want to survive. Through our network, we can get more people to join YW, and hence the 88 Dragons. Then we can pool our karma together to use it at our will.

And we can extort karma points from YW members who aren't part of our group that want to post threads. Then we can start to bribe the moderators with karma, and once we have them in our pocket, we can kick out our enemies and create a section only for 88 Dragons, it will be our "home" turf. And then we can slowly take over each section... Rant Room, Men's, Women's etc. We will control the thoughts of YW and crush our opponents with an overwhelming wave of negative karma... MUHAHAHHAHA! (followed by lighting in the background).

What is a YW Mafia? Do you have to take a code of silence and all that?
Great... now we're gonna have gang rivalries on YW. 88 Dragons, YW Mafia, YW Yakuza, YW Tongs, First Samurais, etc.

But seriously, what's to stop something like this from happening?

People could collude to build up their karma points and "attack" other people with karma.

Or you could have karma trading- give me karma points and a good comment and I'll do the same for you.

Would the moderators overlook this kind of activity? Or shut it down?
Personally, I think you should allow this to go on. I think it would be cool to have this going on, kinda like a mini social experiment.

First worth one, now worth eight
And that seems kind of great
To spread so much karma on this yellow earth.

mr. x

i think noob karma points are worth less
but really karma's meaningless i must stress
they can't be used for buying
they can be abused through lying
but its nice to have nonetheless

meaning i think l33t people give more karma whereas noobs give less.

In theory.

You should seen where I've received karma.

At the risk of receiving flames of fury, I think the karma thing is probably passed-out back and forth between people who chat with each other regularly.

I'll tell you that I've given karma to all the mods, because they are mods.

I've given karma to those who look a little low on karma.

And I've given karma to people because they agree with me.

Which brings up an interesting question:

If you don't think you deserved the karma, how do you give it back?

There is an icon with a check and an "x" in it. See it?

It's on the bottom left-hand corner of each post. That is the karma/reputation thingy.

If you click it, you'll be given an option to give or take away points from a person and to leave a little note.

You can give PMs, karma back, or do nothing. It's your call.

When you see a post you like, go ahead and karma the person, as well.

Unfortunately, if you karma one person, you have to karma like nine or ten other people before you can karma them again.

I'm not sure whether this karma deal is good or bad. Pretty much I'm apathetic towards it because I see it more as a popularity contest. The only thing I'm concerned with, is the abuse of it.

I've noticed a little trend where if someone disagrees with another person's opinion, that person will "de-rep" the other. People who actually care about "karma" are suspectible to supressing their true opinions in order to "be like the majority" and get more of these "points."

I came to YW as a medium to express my opinion and I will express it however damn well as I please and I urge the rest of you to do the same and don't place "karma" points above your integrity or values.

People, we live in a free country where we all have freedom of speech and it is even more evident on something as ubiquitous as the internet.

YW is/was important to me because it was a non-judgemental platform without consequences if you were to state your opinion (however good or bad) in a polite and intelligent matter. You can place value on karma if you want, it won't matter to me, but it does matter to others. I just ask that you don't abuse it.

Give karma to those you admire. De-karma those that abuses YW's system, but don't de-rep them because you disagree with them.

I think with the type of BBS that AB uses, the Karma thing is an element of V Bulletin, it just might be called a different name to another board. I've seen "dollars" and "points", etc.

Give karma to those you admire.
I wouldn't do it for the admiration, part, but for a post that I agree with or that was particularly amusing.

De-karma those that abuses YW's system, but don't de-rep them because you disagree with them.

I don't bother giving negative karma. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion even if it's *way* out there. Besides, I don't like the idea of "punishing" someone from speaking their mind unless they really offend me. As such, haven't de-karma'd anyone. Yet.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but sometimes people are unneccesarily harsh in dictating it, or just say outrageous things to provoke a response when they dont actually care about the issue at hand. Those are instances I would give negative karma.

That being said though, I haven't given out any negative karma either.. yet.

Also it would suck to get in a "karma war".. although there are I think some things built into the karma system to prevent that..

I tend to agree with this view, however I do realize that some posts really need squelching (IMO). It's a double edged sword that needs to be hashed and rehashed as I'm sure AB has agonized over. I've been to forums that had peeps screaming and swearing at each other for days into weeks into months even. Also, I tried to give Pimp the System a karma for two of his threads that I thought were funny, but a box said I have to spread more karma around. How much karma do I have to spread to give that person more karma? How can you tell that a person has multiple accounts? Can I give someone negative karma for giving bad advice? Will they know that I did it?

Some of the accounts are older than the introduction of the karma feature and have not been used recently. Good or bad karma is up to you, though ideally it should be related to more objective purposes. Not sure about the spreading karma issue, I know what you're speaking of but I'm not sure if it's time related or you must karma others first before giving multiple karma to the same member.

I believe it shows who gave you karma good or bad.

Yes, immensely. It keeps me coming back...

Actually i am now under the impression that people are impressed with what i write.

That people also have the potential to take away Karma from me is keeping me from writing totally off the wall little pointless posts, just because.

Also too, when i do get flamed, it's not taken personally. i might even learn from the experience.

While I might not be articulate enough to explain how Karma points work in exactly, here goes...

my explanation of why Karma points vary from person to person: initially the other members take a liking to what the person says, and wants to keep him or her coming back. as well, the person may be contributing positively. few people will come back if he's treated negatively. Karma points may reflect this explanation.

I have recieved negative karma for posting a joke about someone's favorite comic book hero. I sense a lot of hate in her. I have also recieved negative karma when a Chinese poster who accused me of bieng 'neo-nationalist Japanese' and that I've 'scared him'. There is absolutely no way you can please everyone without offending someone along the way. I don't dole out negative karma because I refuse to stoop that low and hate someone for speaking their mind. I feel sorry for posters who drop in the negative and give them positive karma if I've seen that they haven't done anything wrong. I won't give stalkers and creeps positive karma though. They probaly deserved getting banned.

Actually, it was because you made a racist association between blacks and BBQ, which might as well have been associating them with a love for fried chicken and watermelon. I reward all stuff I think is racist or derogatory with negative karma, because I think people should know better. i give negative karma when people don't stick to the topic, post-whore, etc. etc. but i usually only do it after giving a warning or two.

i usually don't give out negative karma when i believe a person is being racist, sexist, etc., unless it seems like they are only doing so to annoy others rather to engage in meaningful discussion.

and ben, that's disgusting.

Actually, it was because you made a racist association between blacks and BBQ, which might as well have been associating them with a love for fried chicken and watermelon. I reward all stuff I think is racist or derogatory with negative karma, because I think people should know better. If you have a problem with me, PM me, but you're not the first and won't be the last.

I really don't give a shit about Fantastic Four. I actually said earlier in the thread that I think they suck.I posted that I wanted a scenario in the Fantastic Four movie where the Human Torch went to his black friend's BBQ, so that the Kings of Comedy could crack jokes on him. I like the Kings of Comedy. I find them hilarious. I think their should be more touching moments in goofy comic book movies like going to a barbecue. It would be very human of a mutant to do so. It didn't have to be his 'black friend'. It could have been his 'white friend'. I just thought that the Kings of Comedy would be more believable in a setting of their own culture. Don't get my infatuation with the Kings of Comedy confused with prejudice because that's just plain retarded. That's would be like me calling you a devil worshipper because you reviewed Hellboy. I could have been a very anal Christian and given you negative karma, along with a private message saying 'Your going to Hell! I hope you burn bitch!' LOL

the stereotype that all black people like barbeque may not seem like a big thing to you, but it's akin to someone saying 'Let's have Psylocke use her mutant powers to give her friends the world's best massage with her feet and then serve them all ginseng and green tea'.

Regardless of what you could've said (and any nonsensical analogies you wish to draw), you made a POINT to associate BBQs with blacks, in a statement that I, personally, found offensive, associating blacks with a stereotype that has been used in the past to poke fun at them. If you can't see that then this conversation was over before it had begun.

If you have anything else to add to this topic, I suggest you PM me, because this public discourse has been just about beaten to death, and it's getting really pointless to keep this up here.

I'll whack the person of your choice with negative karma in exchange for mutually acceptable terms.

There are also a couple of people I'd whack as a freebie.

that's your best defense?

one needs to be black to feel offended, or to see why that would be offensive?

Shogun Empress = Ayumi.

Hey, Shogun Empress, just because it doesn't offend you doesn't mean it's not offensive. I may not be a "brotha," as you so articulately put it, but I found the comment and the subsequent backpeddling ignorant and annoying as well.

someone who is actually even remotely race conscious should be able to recognize racism against any minority group, and not just one's own community.

and your use of 'brothas' to refer to people of the african american community is also questionable.

How does one post equal obsession?
