On these other sites, people, do you specify your ethnicity as would do here?
Danggit, ya beat me to it! I was just about to post this similar question to everyone...
When posting to a forum, do you choose/create a screenname based on:
1) your race
2) your gender
3) a combo of your race and gender
4) race neutral
5) gender neutral
6) race and gender neutral
7) something totally "outre" and original which gives off a "cool" cachet and only makes sense to you

Some people make screennames that represent some facet of their ethnicity, regardless of the type of forum they join. Sometimes, WITH regard (i.e., "Hello Hapa.")
Maybe out of pride, maybe out of trying to be cute...some people don't care either way and make a screenname that has nothing to do with nothing. Who knows? It's indicative of the person's interests, character, personality. If the forum doesn't give options for disclosing race or gender, one might take the SN plus/or the avatar choice, and either see what that person might be like or see where they're headed.
In keeping in line with this topic, I happen to find posters' ID choices interesting. Like Face's SN.

But that's a personal expression on a screen name and avatar. I could do that anywhere and I still don't see how it has anything to do with the original question posed by kasia. She wasn't speaking to any forum where members gather around an interest or hobby and ethnicity isn't terribly relevant (like a gaming forum) but one where race, ethnicity and culture are the theme, the purpose.
Sorry, not getting the connection on the importance of how we go about choosing our screen name on every forum in relation to the topic.

My question was an amplification of what Chotto posted, which pretty much is a sidebar question to the original one Kasia was asking. It is a related, if not necessarily a direct bloodline ancestor, so to speak.
The base of the original question, as I read it, is, "Do you as an XXX ethnicity go to YYY ethnicity sites?" So then I ran with it: "If you as an XXX ethnicity go to a YYY ethnicity site, do you represent your identity directly as XXX ethnicity or no?"

Okay, but I didn't read it that way. CM did that as far as I could tell, asked if we specifiy our ethnicity as we would on Yellowworld both in our profile and postings, which I guess *might* tangentially include screen name to a small extent. As far as I could tell you were asking a series of how we would pick our screen name on the basis of race, gender, combo or pertaining to none of the three.
At any rate, this is getting way off the original topic. I'm satisfied that we're not going to understand one another on this if you are.

but you'll forgive me if i don't do the split myself - trust me, it's best for the integrity of the board if i don't push too many mod buttons.
edit: or should i try it? am i feeling lucky?

It's all good, Kim...and I did understand you. The funny thing is, I originally was about to make that an entirely new thread, then rethought it over and concluded that it had a basis in this one, especially after what Chotto asked, which had been right before the heels of me hitting the send button.
My other reason for doing so was my own personal experiences in other "ethnic majority" forums with using a SN and/or avatar that had nothing to do with me being Black or male or whatever and having people step to me wondering what I was...but yeah, that's a fish dinner for a different day...
If you wanna splice this, by all means, use your powers of mod...

Hmm...what are the implications of using such an avatar/username/signature...?

no way, even if i wasn't drinking champagne. the results of my last attempt to split a thread were quite embarrassing.

I use to be AnAzNPanda (for everything) for like 2-3 years. Then I grew up and learned that my personality isnt necessarily defined by my ethnicity. And so now I am ShortNBitter!

This is probably the first board where I tried to use something ethnocentric (?).
Actually this thread could come close to the ones in "Plant YW".
