when and how, actually.
for me, it was in seventh grade. her name was daNnie and she was from korea. she sat next to me in homeroom and we just started talking. prior to that, yes, my friends were all white. i think she started to befriend me first because she was literally straight from korea (one or two years prior) and felt more comfortable around other asians. we started hanging out and our friendship lasted well into high school. she used to tell me about seo taiji (sp?) boys and i'd talk about leon lai =)

In fifth grade, in Korea. Prior to that we lived in Maryland, and there weren't any Asian children in our cul-de-sac. When we moved to Osan airbase I met other hapa children in my class and made friends.

Third grade maybe? Not until I moved to Boston at any rate. We still lived in military housing but the other families were mainly black, filipino and viet.
3rd or 4th grade. her name was linda, (edit: she's chinese too). we made up dances to new kids on the block songs. step-by-step, oooooh babaaay!
prior to that, hmm, my best friends in 1st and 2nd grade were a mexican boy and then a pakistani girl, respectively. everything before that is kind of a blur, but my preschool was mostly black and mexican. the only other asian i can recall from then was this annoying kid who tried to pull my pants down when i was on the monkey bars.

Second grade. A Korean kid named Glenn. I remember thinking he was kind of crude, but we were both in the smart reading group, so we were friends. Also a Thai kid named Leo. He was a year younger and our parents were friends. And a Thai hapa girl named Renee. Our parents were friends, too. And I played soccer with a Pakistani kid, back then, too.

First Asian-American friend in fourth grade. He's Chinese-American.
We had a lot of classes together since first grade, but didn't really develop a friendship until fourth.
We bonded a lot over first American issues and other issues related to family.
A lot of time when I hear George Lopez jokes, I'm reminded of him because we'd laugh over similar situations.
My first Asia-born friend and I met in the eighth grade, but we got to know each other better in hs. He's Korean.
We shared similar social circles, classes, and race issues at the school.

it was right after i was delivered and my parents bought me home. i was stuck in the baby crib and eventually the playpen with my mom's best friend's two kids when we all lived in taiwan. the youngest was born around the same time as me and the oldest was one year older than me.

they were my first asian friends. from the point that i was delivered i was constantly with those two. we grew up in taiwan together and came to america together when our families moved to america.
up until a few years ago both families would hang out on a constant bases. she was like a sister to my mom.

All my friends from the start have all been Asian since I was a toddler and playing with other kids at church. I don't think I was aware there were non-Asian kids back then.
I don't think I've made any close friends that weren't Asian.

I knew three hapa kids back in grade school. Eric, half Japanese, half White, who looked more mulatto than anything, Akira, half Japanese and half Black, and Vicky, half Vietnamese and half Black.
I never thought about their other halves back then, because being Black in innercity Detroit, you're bound to be mixed with SOMETHING and as long as your skin is remotely "browned" you're considered Black, period.
I met an Indian-American girl during the summer of '85 at an art college summer program. Never "friends," just checked each other out...
I didn't make any true Asian "friends" (meaning people you can bond with over some beer and talk shit) until coming to NYC for art college. Blew up the spot after that. Now my whole world is Benetton...

i guess this thread was addressed to American-born Asians?
so let me think when i made my first Asian friend (outside of my cousins) after moving to the US...
when we were living briefly in Brooklyn, the neighborhood and school district was majority black and i don't remember making any Asian friends there. i think it must have been after i moved to white suburbia, strangely enough. it was a white-washed Filipina hapa. and yes, she was hot. that was in... 6th or 7th grade, i guess. maybe 8th grade. well we were pretty much just acquaintances until highschool when we starting hanging out a little outside of school.

Probably in nursury school, with a kid who was from Japan. He lived near our apartment.
Of course, at the time, I thought I was White, so I don't know if that really counts.
If you want to know the first time I met an Asian when I identified as Asian, then it would have to be sometime in High School.
