i'll save myself from embarassment and not tell you how it happened... but what ended up happening is... my truck was sliding down a slight slope in neutral with the engine off. To my surprise, I had no brakes (I guess because the engine was off?). While sliding backwards in neutral towards the road, I panic and put transmission in reverse which produced a grinding noise, I then slide it back into neutral as the car stopped by itself at the bottom of the slope. Thank god there was no traffic.
I'm just wondering if I did any damage to the transmission? Did I hurt it any? etc.

Is this a manual or auto? Either way, I think you should get it checked out. Especially if its acting funny or making strange noises.

I'm wondering if you just produced tranny whine from engaging REVERSE at speeds above what is supposed to be normal (say, 10-15mph).
First things first:
How big was the slope?
How steep was the incline?
How fast were you going?
Are you sure you were able to get the gear into reverse? Or was it only halfway into R cuz you were in such a hurried state to stop the vehicle?
Was it a grinding sound?
Whining sound?
It doesn't sound anything like when you pop it into reverse and try to jam it down the street at "high" speed?

maybe a 45 degree slope. it was short, so i didn't gather very much speed. i doubt i reached 10mph. it's an automatic.
it was a grinding noise. kind of similar to the sound when someone does not know how to drive a stick shift.
it drives like it did before the fiasco. just wondering if i hurt it any.

auto huh?
i don't know anything about auto tranny's other than it has a torque convertor....sorry.
537 might be able to help.
It sounds like you may have grinded a sun gear. But having it checked out would cost you a lot, so I'd recommend you just drive carefully from now on. At the first sign of slipping or grinding gears during normal daily driving, that's when I'd take it in to have it checked out.
During your little episode, what was your emergency brake doing?
To my surprise, I had no brakes (I guess because the engine was off?).
Brakes still work with the engine off, you just don't have power assist. If this were to happen again, keep in mind you have to really give the brake pedal a very very firm press to have them engage.
