View Full Version : Who was your male role model/hero?
achtungbaby

And is he even Asian...?
Like most other Asian males, my role model was my father. The first Asian role model/hero I can think of, I guess, was probably Bruce Lee, but not from watching the movies he made himself, but his biography, "Dragon," starring Jason Scott Lee.
It's kinda sad I think that "Dragon" is kicked around these days because, according to some, it solidifies the negative stereotype of every Asian male as a Bruce Lee figure...but for me, the first time I saw an Asian actor in a lead role in a major Hollywood production who *wasn't* some wuss or wimp or super geek...I was very encouraged/inspired.

hmm yeah my real life male role model is my dad, too. My err "Celeb" role model is CHairman Mao. Yeah, The East is RED baby. Chairman Mao is strong, smart, charismatic, and he banged a lot of sweet chicks. Plus he IS a hero...he had heroic aspirations like wiping out 5000 yrs of backward culture to create a better new world or showing that manpower is greater than machinery. Too bad he was wrong and 20 or more million ppl died from famines, etc, but the dude DID believe in mankind and had the guts to want to change things totally, not like the wussiness we see now in proposals for "reform."
My mythical hero is the Monkey King, cuz i was born in the yr of the monkey, and he easily kicks the hell out of any of those other mythical or kung fu figures. jackie chan? jet li? puuuuuuuuh------lllllleeeze. Only man who could diss monkey was Buddha...even the king of heaven was helpless before Monkey, and Death was a joke. Monkey said DEATH YOU ARE MY BITCH! IMA MAKE MYSELF IMMORTAL AND MY PPLZ IMMORTAL! WHATCHA GONNA DO YOU LITTLE PUNK?

here's a question for the guys:
if actungbaby and ktownn hit it off, is that considered cheating?
if you start forming feelings for your best guy friend, is that considered cheating on your gf? and please give your personal opinions.
and for NotAsian: yeh, my doggie too. he died when i was in 8th grade but he had the best temper of any dog i know.

Well, Sorta cheating, but i don't think anyone can really help his feelings. So, I think, as long as someone tries to suppress his unfaithful urges and doesn't DO anything, it's not cheating.
I don't think achtung has feelings for ktownn, unless he likes getting analed, cuz that seems to be what ktownn's into...

Nah those two guys are the same person... AB is using K to make himself look good. Then when people start noticing the lovefest AB starts to withdraw.
As for a role model.... I can't remember that I had one. Maybe thats why I grew up to be a total slacker. Can I list the combined teachings of all the cartoons that I watched? Although, I guess, all I would have learned from that is too not chase mice or road runners or fight with sheepdogs. or maybe to only use gummiberry juice in emergency situations. how bout to read more...cuz learning is half the battle, GO JOE? do i always run jokes out to their breaking point?

My friend and I had a conversation about role models and media this morning. Though we were half sleeping since it was 3a, it all made perfectly good sense.
Lemme sum it up-
show some flesh, dance, sing, and if you're lucky, you can become famous. no education required. just tits & ass. hardy harr. sing about 13 songs, make an album and boom! you're making millions. lots of kids look up to singers and stars. they want to be just like them. and what exactly is it that they see?
-skimpy clothes, tits & ass, makeup, skinniness
-buffness, $, a nice car, girls, sex
school and books. study your ass off like a mofo. professionals like doctors and lawyers go through SO much schooling and whatnot to get to the point they are, to have their jobs. but even if they work a lifetime and they're successful, their money will not amount to the millions of easy money singers make.
good looks=good.
intelligence=good.
money=good.
good looks + intelligence + money=set for life.
none of the above=screwed eternally. ;x
anywaay, this was a half assed post cus everything is jumbly, but i'm hoping you get the gyst of whatever it is i was typing about. hah. just pretend like you get what i'm talking about, k?

mm hmm mm hmm. *nodds head up and down* yes, I agree.
yeah its too bad a lot of kids are exposed to what passes for role models these days. So much is being focused around entertainment.
There's this movie Jennifer Connelly was in called "Waking the Dead." I think near the end of the movie she says something like - People end up doing what they want to do or what they're meant to do.
I think in the context of the movie she ends up doing what she wanted to do and ends up unhappy whereas her love interest Billy Crudup ends up doing what he was meant to do and gains a lasting peace and happiness for it (or something geez my memory is just shot). Did any of that make sense? Y'know I thought this related to the original question somehow...but now that I reread it.. I'm not sure it makes sense to me, even.
amietron
05-24-2002, 12:50 PM
it makes sense, cus it has something to do with

yah seriously... How do we figure that out.. I mean I want to be an artist and i think that'll make me happy, but I guess according to that movie I wont be now? I don't know. I think i'm gonna go watch Office Space again. Watching that movie makes me smile cause maybe i'll just be happy as a construction worker.
is it sad that I get challenged by movies yet I turn to other movies for the answer? he he I need to read more.
Who's Sonny Kang? This just goes to show you that I definitely need a site like this. I have no clue whats goin on in the Asian American landscape. BTW I really like that little random quote thing on the home page.

When I was growing up, I wanted to be Kwai-Chang Caine, the lead character of the TV show [i:c6d87ff332]Kung Fu[/i:c6d87ff332] played by David Carradine. I'm talking about the [i:c6d87ff332]original[/i:c6d87ff332] series that was set in the Wild West and first broadcast in the 1970s, not that horrible updated revival series from the 1990s. However, these days, the idea of a white actor playing a lead Asian character really bugs me.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I think that, despite some shortcomings, [i:871a146acb]Kung Fu[/i:871a146acb] — the series originally broadcast in the 1970s — was a good show. The updated series in the 1990s, however, was horrible.

when i was a kid my rolemodel was optimus prime from transformers if that counts! 8O
This fellow Sonny Kang isn't "Sung Kang" in Better Luck Tomorrow, is he? That'd be ironic. I have no idea who or what I'm talking about though.
Optimus was also a role model of mine. He was always so cool headed and a great leader. I was sad to see him pass in Transformers the Movie. But he was such a badass that he came back in the afterlife and saved the Autobots from a booby trap, and came back a second time to save the world from a space plague.

You really thought so? I suppose he ultimately ended up being a good leader, but I remember when he first started out, he was a sniveling, whimpering leader not worthy of the Matrix. No one could be as bad as Ultra Magnus though.
And with that, I think we've lost everyone.

Optimus Prime is the true leader of the Autobots!!! Screw that damn Rodimus Prime...stoopid Hot Rod getting Optimus killed. ...damn bastard. Hey, let me ask this question even though this is getting way off topic. Didn't Bumblebee say "shit" in Transformers the movie?

I think the story goes... There a planet that destroys other planets for energy. I think it also was able to transform, right? (anybody) Then something happens to somebody and what not. hehe I forget... then Optimus Prime was dying and had to hand over the Matrix to the next leader of the Autobots and picked Hot Rod who then became Roddimus Prime. my summary sucks im sorry

if we want to get technical, Optimus Prime didn't hand the Matrix to Hot Rod, he was actually handing it over to the Car trailer guy thing, but it slipped out of his hands and Hot Rod caught it.
:)
kekeke.
Well, Hot Rod was the one that got Prime killed so, you know, he had to make it up somehow. Ultra Magnus was Prime's heir to the throne but he was a fucking dumbass, trying to open the Matrix to save his own ass, thinking HIS demise was the Autobots' "darkest hour." And what's going on in the meantime? Unicron's wanting to munch on Cybertron! Selfish bastard...
AB: I've got Transformers the Movie on DVD. Lemme know if you want to borrow it--it'll explain everything.
So, to drag us back onto topic... Rick Hunter a.k.a. Hikaru Ichijo was another of my role models back in the day... The dude was a pimp with both Lisa/Misa Hayes and Lynn Minmay/Minmei. Come to think of it, I think Robotech may have been the only other time I ever saw an Asian dude getting play from Caucasian woman in anything released in the American mainstream besides "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story"...
And while we're talking Macross, Roy Fokker was also someone to be admired: No color lines...

i remember when they showed robotech on channel 13 at 5 o'clock. that shit was tight. i always looked forward to that 30 minute segment. skull fighters! i used to always wonder how come some characters looked white and others looked asian, yet they all spoke japanese (video version of course).
another hero of mine was definitely He-Man and Snake Eyes from GI Joe. I thought he was badass cuz he wore all black, was blind, and knew martial arts. I always hoped that behind his mask, he'd be an asian guy. *sigh* oh well.
Well, there was always Snake Eyes's Cobra counterpart, Stormshadow. I hope to god that that dude was Asian. As for Asians on the Joe team, there was Quick Kick. One thing that peeved me back in the day: GI*JOE The Movie had that one Asian chick, Jinx (Jinks?) with one of the lamest faux Asian accents ever (I think it was fake). And, of course, she falls for the honkey. Tsk tsk. Oh well, whatever.

yeah, i admit.. a part of me has begun to feel disappointed with him also. I mean, I think he still does good things. He's not totally MIA. I've received a couple of group emails from him as to what he's up to... He's working on this upcoming television program. And he just recenetly wrote an article about LA and the World Cup Fever. Anyways, while I think what he talks about makes a lot of sense when it comes to empowering yourself... such as becoming directors, journalist, writers, etc... Yet, on the other hand... I think its kinda equally important to ADDRESS certain issues... such as the MTV issue... and to make a noise about it... which I think he kinda wimped out on.. Cuz being able to ADDRESS certain issues... brings AWARENESS of a current problem, injustice, or what have you... and than ultimately brings progress and change...
Oh wellz, Sonny Kang... I think he's still a good guy... but yeah, I have begun to question whats more important to him.. his career or justice for the korean community... ??

So this is how deification starts!
If Sonny's career is more important to him than the Korean community, so be it -- that would place him in the vast majority who feel the same way. How many of us out there would sacrifice our own careers for the sake of our own communities?
Sonny's just a normal person like the rest of us, and I the somewhat stringent standards we might place on him should be placed on ourselves first. Granted, there are some of us here who are indeed active -- very active -- in asian activism, and that's great. But activism -- our definition for it, anyway -- isn't for the majority, I think. It would be nice, of course, if it was, but most people are interested in just getting by, making it, and I don't think we should judge them for that.
