Music Video: "Believe"
Performer: Tamaki Nami
This review is begins a description of the video, followed by the analysis of the different aspects of the video. The purpose of this review is to analyze the message of the video. If anyone can provide a translation of the song "Believe", then we'll see if it matches what I have observed watching the video.
Video begins with dance sequence of dancers in black work uniforms.
Nami dances in front with them in black plastic jumpsuit. She has casual clothes underneath.
Cut to girl in white hair wig, close-up, standing still possibly and cut to close-up of Nami in jumpsuit intersperced with Nami dancing with dancers.
Most dancers are unsmiling.
Another cut of Nami in wig looking down.
Possible reason dancers and Nami not smiling: to reflect mood of song.
Cultural trait reflected: in order not to offend censors, none of the performrs are smiling. Smiling means you are enjoying yourself. This would mean you are selfishly indulging in fun.
Possible inference of "Believe": we believe we will perform this video to meet the production goal required of us.
Analysis
My impression of "Believe" is that it is pop music for the masses.
Putting the dancers in black work jumpsuits is to show that the dancers are in control.
One impression of the dancers I have is that they are serious about their art. The color of their costumes, black, symbolizes power and control.
Nami is in a black plastic jumpsuit to set her apart from the dancers.
The cut to the close up of Nami in jumpsuit confirms that she is the star of the production.
Also emphasizing this point are the close ups of Nami in a white haired wig.
In the wig she appears to be standing still. This gives the impression of presence.
Since white hair represents the power of the elders, the message says "Please respect me as a performer, and idol to loving fans."
