I'm in a bit of a dilemma at present.

I'm being put forward for a one month contract for a prestigious company and I expect an answer from them shortly, However I have been offered a guaranteed 8 week contract on less money and am starting tomorrow.

I am not really interested in the job starting tomorrow as its not career enhancing in any way shape or form and it also doesn't have prospects, The only bonus is that its a trial thing so I guess I can walk out at any stage.

So I tell the first company that I have a guaranteed offer and they want me to start tomorrow, But the consultant says to me to hold on and wait for a decision and they should get back to me this afternoon, Which they didn't.

So now this other company is expecting me tomorrow and yes I am going to have to take it as I am not going to turn down work in the hope of something better coming along.

So the dilemma I have now is 'do I accept this role knowing that if I get offered the other role then I'll walk out and take it even though its going to make me look bad.

Take the job that will be temporary anyway and then walk out if the job you really want comes through. Would it matter if you were with them two weeks or two years? You need to think of yourself first. Good luck :)

Life is full of unforeseen circumstances. Some are truly beyond the scope of our control while others are more manageable in that they can be constructed, nurtured and deployed as when needed.

take the job and walk out when you get something better. remember, companies won't hesitate to lay you off if they need to. it's all just about business and money.

I am sure these HR jockeys are aware that some candidates have multiple offers and employees are shopping for better jobs all the time. They will understand if you walk out.

I got screwed by the first agency.

He strongly advised me to turn down the other role as he was extremely confidant that I was going to get offered the other role, So guess what, they decide to recruit somebody else with a bit more experience than me.

So now I've lost out, I am now seriously pissed.

yup it happens. don't trust what a company says until you've got something on paper. and remember, like i said before, they won't hesitate to lay you off if they need to. you're a commodity to them, and you should treat them likewise.

In a related topic, my boss just quit, less than 6 months after he joined, to go take a better offer at another firm. (He was a contractor hired specifically to lead the project we're in the middle of right now).
