"haak gwai" is an offensive term (though some older-gen chinese might not necessarily think so) for black people in cantonese. the "gwai" part means "devil" or "ghost".

similarly, "baak (bok?) gwai" means "white person". still offensive, but i think there's more sting with "haak gwai", or maybe that's just me...

I don't want people to think defamation is okay, but I'm also trying to play with irony -- a haak gwai being thought of as somebody who delivers wisdom and is respected for knowing his craft.

If you're not Asian (or even maybe if you are even still), if you're coming with lingo and character moves, you better LEARN and KNOW your shit or don't come at all. People who know and see it WILL check you on that.

I'm still learning and I don't bother bumping what I don't know and think it MIGHT be...doesn't hurt to ask, which is why you made the thread, but it's real hard to get people to open up on the REALLY bad cuss words even though for you on the outside it seems interesting to know. I myself got Japanese and Korean peeps giving me lingo I can't say in front of moms but it's usually at the bar and after a few jinros...

Also, make sure your methods fit your message. You could unintentionally have someone misunderstand what you really wanna say. I'm sure your track will be tight in the end.

But when you cobble things like that together it doesn't make sense to anyone but another foreigner maybe. I don't think the guys are personally offended by the slang so much as are shaking their heads about it how and why you're trying to use it.

i don't really care if they want to tattoo Asian characters on their bodies. for one thing, lots of Asian kids do it themselves. and it does look kind of cool sometimes as long as it's something that makes sense. Asian caligraphy does look cool. but i seriously suggest that if you want to do this and you're unfamiliar with the language, ask a friend who knows to help you come up with a phrase or a word, instead of translating an English term into that language. sometimes literal translations just doesn't work and it ends up reading like subtitles in old kungfu movies - in reverse.

In my life, I've made relationships with people from hella different cutural backgrounds.
Some of it, including foreign words, I take with with me wherever I go. So I'm trying to use some of it in hip hop. As an artist, I have the freedom to mix words in certain orders that don't neccessarily make any grammatical sense, but I still need to get my point across as clear as possible.

So if using 'haak gwai' and 'si gung' in the same sentence is confusing, then maybe I need to change some of it around -- or find a different audience. I undertand what the words mean. Just like I understand what 'ronin' means, whereas most people think it's just a movie. One problem I have is that people who speak Cantonese don't always understand everything -- so they expect ME not to know either.

Speaking of tatoos, I've had this tiger-dragon (yin-yang) on my shoulder for the past eight years. I got it for reasons I won't discuss, but some people understand it and some people just think it looks nice... I need to get another tiger.

We used the term Si Gung in Wun Hop Kuen Do. It's also used Wing Chun, Kenpo, Chuan Fa, Kajukenbo, and other styles of martial arts.
