"hello f-body. my name is tie my shoe, and i will do a litto rapping for you today--juss a litto free-sty-o"

any of you get offended by this? or is it okay b/c it was done by a chinese guy in san francisco?

this topic is related to whether "chink" is acceptable if a Chinese person says it. There's this resident physician/friend who introduced me to that song. He laughed through the entire thing. At first, I laughed, but then the psychology major that I am, I wonder how non-Asians feel about this song if they ever heard of it. I have a feeling that they may find it funny too, but what do I know? It's just a hypothesis. I also think that Tie My Shoe may actually evoke or underlyingly reinforce stereotypes and negative attitudes toward Asians. Whether or not this song is sung by an Asian or not, the person singing this song is making a mockery of people with accents. Admittingly, I used to tease my parents about some of the words they say in English. They would laugh at themselves when I point out how "weird" their speech was, but that was then when I didn't understand how others could marginalize my parents based on their accent and ethnicity. It may just be another song, but I can see how it can have negative implications.

hey if you find it funny, you find it funny. when i imagine the possibility that this song was done by asian people, i find it extremely funny. when i imagine the possibility that it was done by non-asian people, i find it extremely insulting. i can't really divorce the song itself with the possible race of the people who sang it.

I think what's funny can only go so far. This song was funny to me because it was sung in the context of an Asian person, but there are people out there who don't know how to discern history from humor. Undoubtedly, there will be people out there who will take this song as a justification for their ignorance. ;)

That's pretty much my take on it, although I've been backwards in my thinking before.

I just had a thought: we'll all laugh when it's an Asian American doing the humor because at least he's Asian...but who started this type of humor to begin with? Asians from Asia, making fun of their own accents?

Stupid question time. I got from kasia's post that the comic is Chinese - what about the audience? Is he performing for Asians or not?

'Cuz overall it just doesn't sound like a funny Asian joke. Or is he a fob or imitating an accent? Not really getting the humor.

I saw this on the main forum page as having the most recent post and I thought it had to do with actually tying your shoe... like you wanted someone to go over and do it for you

Or... an oblique way to get someone to bend down so a sick man can rub his hoo-hoo-dilly against the woman's crown

I liked the "Got Rice Bitch" song better.

Both of these tho, were created by small time Asians with too much time on their hands and distributed over the net by their friends, usually Asian.

But most White people on my campus heard about it too, and they all thought it was funny.

It's not that funny in my opinion.

Especially, when it backfires, as in someone coming up to an Asian and saying, "Tie my shoe" biyatch!

maybe...but i can't see how a white person would actually understand the humor in 'tie my shoe'. the 39 cent cheeseburgers and marlboro lights. etc. etc.

tai mai shu-- is that even a plausible Asian name?

As for the hamburger jokes, i don't see how white people wouldn't get it. all it is is a joke about being cheap, right?
