In my search for Japanese-Canadian internment I found a fictional account of prison camp experience by Terry Watada called Daruma Days. He uses ghost story imagery and other plot devices to ensure I didn't mistake his work for fact.

However, the authentic voice is found through such devices as the Buddhist ministers and the use of Japanese idioms.

In a way I feel that a few Japanese-Canadians may be still suffering the after-effects from internment in Canada. Watada's work seems to confirm my feelings on it.

In contrast, George Takai's memoirs about Japanese-American internment shows that the Japanese didn't fare much better in the US.

Watada's Daruma Days shows us how we survived: day by day.
