I don’t believe it. I honestly do not believe it. A movie featuring The Mask, Mary Jane Watson, the younger version of the old lady from Titanic, and Frodo Baggins himself is monotonous. But wait, you say. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has been getting rave reviews all the live long week….what the hell kind of critic are you to go against the whole of the critic society? One with taste, obviously (ba-dum-bump). Upon hearing about this movie, I was all prepared to love it. I heard that Jim Carrey was excellent in it, even after hearing the exact same things about his Man on the Moon and the Majestic, a movie I still have yet to see (and in the future, probably will still have yet to). Considering the A-list cast of Carrey, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Kate Winslet, combined with a screenplay by Charlie “my movies will make you think, and also run screaming” Kaufman, Eternal Sunshine should be one of the most enjoyable movies out now. I have to own up to it…there are scenes that could only be described as abstract art come to life, but aside from those few instances…it just weighs itself down.
The basic plotline concerns Carrey’s character Joel, and his discovery that his ex-girlfriend Clemintine (Winslet) has abruptly had their relationship wiped clean from her memory through the use of Lacuna, Inc., a company that has the ability to erase points in a person’s memory completely. Angered by what she’s done, Joel goes to the exact same place, in an attempt to do the exact same thing and have her wiped clean from his own memory banks. As the process unfolds though, he discovers that, surprise, surprise…he doesn’t want her completely gone, like he once thought.
The problem I had with this movie, aside from the fact that its plot is again, similar to earlier movies concerning memories…Nemo, Memento, etc., is that it’s way too incoherent when they delve into Joel’s psyche. You better be paying attention like you’re in your damn physics lecture, because missing one thing or not catching something will cause extreme and utter confusion. Keeping everything straight in a movie is supposed to be fun, not a chore, and it felt like a chore to me watching this about halfway through. Also, two or three times Carrey transforms from his dramatic ac-tore status to Ace Ventura, as he re-lives his childhood in several scenes. I like when he’s the comedian, but in this movie, it seemed too out of place.
The movie was directed by Michael Gondry, whose past work is music video directing (a video director directing a movie? Get the fuck outta here!!!!) He’s done videos for The White Stripes, among other acts, and if you’ve seen any of those, you’ll recognize his style in the memory loss scenes, as stuff disappears and reappears very harshly. It’s an interesting effect, though you will get sick of it after the 6th time.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I cannot really recommend you. You were an interesting experience, but ultimately you just didn’t know what you wanted to be, even with the $20 million cast.

Just watched it. Similar to Memento in terms of what function memories play but different enough to stand on its own. The imagery is pretty trippy, what I expected from Gondry (same guy who did the Bjork videos). The only failing is the pacing. There's a point where you realize exactly what happened and you want all the memories erased but it keeps going for another 30 minutes in a pastiche of music video shorts. While beautiful and fun to watch, a good deal should have been left on the cutting room floor for the sake of delivering a proper story. It became tedious when it should have been entertaining.

Also just saw it with high expectations. Thought it was okay. It really lack the emotional pull which I was expecting and you could blame the objectivity in terms of the point of view as the cause. I did however like the energy and madness with some of the surreal moments and in terms of perfomance, thought the cast overall did a fine job. 3.5/5

i saw it and loved it. If Truman Show didnt appease the critics in all of you that Jim Carey could act in a drama then this movie should open some eyes if not minds.

Unlike memeto this movie is pure love story, the Soundtrack is terrific from a music video director as you can imagine. The subplot with Dunst was a bit of a surprise i must say.

i gave it a 4 out of five stars......Only because the atmosphere was a bit darker than it needed to be.

Ah, this is one of my favourite movies. Aside from the confusion which I took with stride. I adored and treasured it, I watched it over and over for a week crying my eyes out, I taken in by Kate Winslet, she made the perfect Clementine. As for Jim Carrey, I think he did well with sticking to the neuroticism of his character sans the moments he was being he was acting out during he was being his younger self. I loved the contrast to their personalities, which correlates to my own relationship, an emotional attachment I have with that movie I do admit. However painful the relationship was, there lies the most beautiful scenes you will see unfold.

I think it's a film you have to have a "once over" of watching to get the gist of the plot (but your review already established it), but the character development, the complexities of relationships, not just Clementine and Joel's relationship but also Mary's I found intriguing, the story behind her and perhaps it's just my bias towards the "naive and young" roles.

And someone mentioned the soundtrack! Oh god, I love it even more than the movie itself. The musician who did the score for the movie is Jon Brion, who I absolutely adore. For your own sake, do check out his music. He is the producer behind other artist such as Aimee Mann and Fiona Apple.

As you see, I really do love this movie.

it was pretty confusing until you got to the end, and then everything clicked. i just thought it was good because jim carrey and kate winslet played characters completely different from what they usually do.

Actually Kate Winslet naked is the only good thing about The Titanic.

The only reason why I never rented this from the video store is because I don't take drugs.

A lot of the imagery is just too psychodelic for me.

And I am the guy who really loved The Tibetan Book of the Dead for explaining how my brain works.

I went to see this at the time and remember enjoying it, but thought it would have benefited if the last 20-25 minutes were cut - it just showed what could have been left unsaid. For some reason I found this a snuggly movie to watch; the wintry weather on screen I guess.
