these ppl just want the activist groups to make a scene about this, a la A&F, so they can boost sales. All the while claiming that the statement isn't racist....which is a very debatable topic, especially when you're talking about trying to convince the majority that "everyone loves asian girls" is a racist statement, if ppl already have problems saying that the A&F shirts were racist.

Urban's attempt to spark contraversy is so blatant that it's just plain pathetic.

What a sort of queer campaign.

It could be worse, the designs could feature Asian chicks in kimonos or hair done up.

WTF, mate?

Alright. I understand that there are people out there that hate Asians and personally want to see them either dead or shipped back to mainland China (don't worry, I do too)--still, a line must be drawn somewhere. And the line ends here:

(Insert UO pic here.)

Now, the t-shirt reads: "Everybody loves an Asian girl."

And what ethnicity is the girl?

Answer: Not Asian, that's what.

What the hell? The Latin t-shirt gets a Latin model, the German shirt has an Aryan girl but, no models for the Asian shirt? Why is that?

Answer: Communist propaganda, that's what.

Come on, how hard is it to find an Asian person to wear the shirt? Honestly.

talking girl burnt her homework at 8:22 PM oh yeah, that's right.

i was just trying to make a bad joke. it was bad, and it wasn't a joke.

I always wonder ... what's the line here? It often appears as if companies are looking for this kind of publicity. How do we hurt them?

There are a couple of shirts for "boys" on the site--"Everybody loves a Jewish boy" and "Everybody loves an Italian boy." Plus I guess you could argue that most of this humor is pretty adolescent--thus, for girls and boys and not men and women.

If we were to complain about the "Everybody Loves ... Girl" line, we'd be too late:

Tee shirt messages (http://www.canada.com/montreal/montrealgazette/story.asp?id=CCA2DA8E-2137-46CB-91CE-27C5DC43B106)
An Urban Outfitters T-shirt with the slogan "Everyone loves a Jewish girl," surrounded by tiny hearts, shopping bags and dollar signs, angered B'nai Brith Canada. In January, the organization said the T-shirt perpetuated the myth that Jews are greedy. Urban Outfitters agreed to modify the shirt, removing the dollar signs from the design.

Actually, UO has been on a roll at pissing everyone off. Witness this:

Magnetic Jesus attracts complaints (http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_895001.html)
A Pennsylvania clothes shop has caused outrage in the US by selling Magnetic Jesus Dress Up! novelty toys.

Buyers can dress up an image of Jesus on the cross in different outfits including a tutu, flippers and a devil's suit.

The Magnetic Jesus Dress Up! kits are being sold at Urban Outfitters in Pennsylvania which has received complaints from shoppers.

Urban Outfitters says it's not seeking to "provoke or offend" but to reflect the diversity of opinion among its customers.

The creater of the toys, who goes by the name 'Normal' Bob Smith, insists he's doing nothing wrong.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with religious satire," he told NBC10. "People have got to learn to laugh at themselves, it's part of human nature."

i guess they could argue that they are celebrating diversity. but why do the shirts say "girl" rather than "women"? are they into pedophilia? also, why aren't there shirts for men?
Am I the only one that sees this as sarcastic sort of commentary?

"Everyone loves an asian girl" as in, "mainstream society is totally willing to embrace asian females, in contrast to how it treats asian males and males or females of any other race." The fact that it's being sold at Urban Outfitters makes me think that it's aimed to appeal to white female bitterness at asian women "stealing" white men, thrown in.

And while that's rather catty, I don't see it as "racist" so much as I see it as jaded/snarky...

nifer
03-18-2004, 12:30 PM
actually, the reasoning for using the word "girl" is because their target consumer is mid -teen to early 20's. though i admit, that those in their 20s would rather be referred to as "women"

I hate UO anyway because they're trying to be all hip, indy and streetsmart, but they're just another friggin commercial establishment. I'm not categorically opposed to commercialism, but I hate it when firms masquerade as something other than what they really are.

I saw a couple of "Everybody Loves an Irish Girl" shirts yesterday, reflecting how much of how Irish American culture has been reduced to kitsch. Asian American culture hasn't reached that level of kitschiness, so I agree with the assessment that the t-shirt is more targetted toward snarky white girls or Asian girls with a white/black fetish.

But I can't seriously imagine a non-Asian wearing that, either. It would be like me wearing a shirt that said something like "Everyone loves a black dude": I'd either be setting myself up to get mocked or to get the shit beaten out of me.

i want a "everyone loves an asian guy" shirt. a nice big eff-you to urban outfitters. :) someone make one!

lastly, i'm guilty of owning two shirts from there. *hangs head* $20 for a pink wifebeater that says "unsweetened". $24 for a tshirt about chocolate. waaaay over-priced, yes. bleh. i agree with Seamus - they masquerade as a trendy-vintagey store.

Is it?

My point is that I don't see the use of "girls" on the T-shirt as being any different than when I, for example, will refer to females my age as "girls." That is...perhaps it's semantically condescending, but I don't see it as having anything to do with race.
But I can't seriously imagine a non-Asian wearing that, either. It would be like me wearing a shirt that said something like "Everyone loves a black dude"
I don't think so. That UO shirt -- as stupid as it is -- seems, to me, to be playing off of how it now seems obligatory for every single local news channel to employ at least one female Asian reporter/anchor...stuff like that. The whole "Asian females are embraced by the mainstream" thing [1], whereas black males are most definitely not embraced by the mainstream.

[1] And I'm not, of course, implying that the mainstream, in the process of "embracing" Asian females, doesn't objectify/exotify/whatever Asian females.

I apologize for the major tangent, but we have these Chinese family friends with a not overly sharp and mediocre-looking daughter who wants to be a local news station anchor. I make fun of her and say things like "Oh, you want to be the next Connie Chung," or "Oh, I heard you wanted to be an Asian Female Newscaster." I'm an asshole.

It makes no difference if they have one for "boys" too. In fact, I'd probably argue that the company purposely chose to do so to deflect criticism.

Whether or not UO is an equal-opportunity offender isn't the issue. I still think the shirt is offensive. And I think there is a peculiar intersection of race and gender that makes the "Asian girl" shirt particularly problematic.

In any event, using "girl" to refer to a woman is sexist.

You know you're doing alright, if you can piss-off the National Review:

Rage Against the Vote Rockers (http://www.nationalreview.com/goldberg/goldberg200403100940.asp)
UUrban Outfitters, a 58-store chain that has made millions from marketing fashion for young people who want to look like they still live in their parents' basement, sold a t-shirt so vile — so Just Plain Wrong! — it's thrown big swaths of the media, the do-gooders at Harvard University, and that wall of sound usually called "youth-outreach groups" into paroxysms of rage.

The shirt wasn't racist, sexist, or any of the other outrages that usually send sensitive America into regular bouts of St. Vitus's Dance. No, this bonfire of outrage has been lit by a most unpredictable torch: a t-shirt that reads, "Voting Is for Old People," which has subsequently been pulled from stores.

Outside of that, UO line mentioned above is really DULL looking.

i've seen a lot of chicks wearing the "....Irish girl" and "...Italian girl" shirts. i guess it was only a matter of time before the "...Asian girl" shirts came out. Also I remember the J.A.P. controversy from a few months ago...

i want a "everyone loves an asian guy" shirt. a nice big eff-you to urban outfitters. :) someone make one!

lastly, i'm guilty of owning two shirts from there. *hangs head* $20 for a pink wifebeater that says "unsweetened". $24 for a tshirt about chocolate. waaaay over-priced, yes. bleh. i agree with Seamus - they masquerade as a trendy-vintagey store. http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/images/us/local/products/productsall/p113469c.jpg

Excellent. I'll wear one out to dinner at P.F. Chang's.

And when the waiter asks if I need chopsticks I'll just hold one palm up and say "No need," as I pluck them from my hairdo.

Yeah, I was going to say I saw the Asian boy one at UO in Santa Monica a few weeks ago.

Maybe the models are gay/lesbian? That's the only reason I can think of.

Would it be better or worse if the design of the whole slogan was different?

How much are these tees? It looks like you could do a better job yourself!

they're probably your standard hip-yuppie-wear prices, call it $30.

EDIT: yep, all in the 20-30 range. tho i couldn't find the asian boy shirt anymore.

Boss idea! Lemme throw you a few slogans that just might catch fire on our prospective coasts...targeting a few niche markets nobody's probably keened onto yet:

"Everybody loves an octoroon boy"

"Tiamat is my homegoddess"

"Hillary/Beyoncé in 2008"

"Kiss me, I'm Cablinasian"

with chopsticks in her hair, all the while feeding sushi to a white business man.....wow, i sound bitter

yes u sound bitter. i think the whole thing is to throw more fuel on the fire between azn girls and guys. everyone doesnt love azn girls or u wouldn't have the mail order brides being killed by the husbands or azn illegal immigrant women having to work in massage parlors. or sexist "love u long time" stupidness. the only attention that store should get from us is when we glance as we walk by without shopping. yellowperilgirl

my brother has this shirt actually. He apparently gets a lot of compliments for it...and it's not a bad looking shirt on the average-slightly large running asian male frame.

i don't think it's even that... it's just pure unitentional irony."everybody loves a buddhist boy", "everybody loves an irish girl", "everybody loves an italian boy", "everybody loves a latin girl", etc. contemplate all of those for a moment. then you'll see what i mean.

but 1) I'm female 2) I'm barely Asian and look full white 3) My spouse is full Asian. In other words, I'd look ridiculously Asiaphile wearing it.

Yeah, Lew's right. If you wear it, you'd be big upping your spouse, which is a plus for Asian guys who wanna increase the social caucasian female affection. Actually, you'd really only look "Asiaphile" if you wear it while NOT being with your spouse.

I think the only reactions you'd get are head scratches because the only Asian boys people can only conjure up in their heads are William Hung or Jackie Chan.
