if you were to join, would you be more inclined to join a cherry blossom/roseball/chinatown/etc. pageant? aside from hawaii, has an asian female won a state pageant?
what are you thoughts on this?

A classmate o'mine from med school has a sister who won Miss California in the Miss America pageant two years ago. She is chinese. Although she finished 3rd overall in the Miss America pageant, there was a Hawaiian Miss America last year I think. Not sure of her exact ethnicity.

Wasn't that Angela Baraquio who won the Miss American pageant a year ago or so?

I'd rather be in one that's not just for Asian girls. I don't know why, but I find that being of a different ethnicity sort of gives you an edge. Like... the whole exotic appeal thing. *Shrug*

i think the whole exotic appeal thing only works in our favor when we don't want it to. definitely won't work in our favor in pageants.

I think it might. Pageants are, after all, like everything else, a matter of opinion.
[EDIT] Besides... It's hard to be considered the prettiest out of a bunch of Asian girls with Asian judges, etc... When you're one of few Asian people in a group of a bunch of cookie cutter white girl pageant types, it's easier to stand out and have a refreshing look.

mmm...but so was american idol. and i can't believe that the reason no black people made it to the very final rounds was b/c they lacked the talent. it was b/c the title 'american idol' conjured thoughts of a white idol.
similarly with state pageants, i always think that the judges will say (with regards to any asian contestants), "she is pretty. but there isn't anything about her that says 'miss mississippi." or whatever.

Justin's black, isn't he?
American Idol is totally rigged, by the way. At least, I think it is.
And yes, maybe Miss Mississippi isn't the way to go... but there HAS been an Asian Miss California, hasn't there? Or am I just confused... *Scratches head*

i tend to think that beauty pageant judges would be more conservative and go for the classic look instead of the exotic look. unless you're participating in miss budwieser or something.

if i recall, her name was Rita Ng, wasn't it? That was in the same year during which the Filipina girl from Hawaii won Miss America.

You don't have to separate classic beauty with exotic appeal. Timeless beaties don't all have to be white.... I don't mean exotic appeal like I have tiger stripes or something... I just mean skin tone. It's not unconservative, I don't think. ...Just kind of refreshing... it's hard to find a white girl with eyes as dark as mine. :)

Angela Perez Baraquio, first Asian-American Miss America crowned in 2001. My friend's sister, Rita Ng was Miss California during the same competition and came in third overall.

is it just me or are those girls not very attractive? i mean they certainly fit into the "average" category that most people fall into. but nothing exceptional though.

they are exceptional in that they have *huge* smiles. not every chick has that.
