what is and is not appropriate to ask HR for? for example, can i ask for a new computer? they said i would get one, but it's been a week and i think they forgot. can i ask for a flat screen? a new set of chairs?

i just asked for a new light bulb, a name placard for my door, and keys. those are reasonable, of course.

just curious - what have you asked for in the past? what things are out of the question?

i had to order everything for my desk. an organizer. shelves, bookends. stapler, calculator, pens, pencils, scissors. you probably have to order business cards. and a business card holder. i also ordered a fan. i wish i had a portable heater too, but i doubt i can get that. :p

it depends on whats around in your department, too, no?

i think if you see everyone else with something cool (nice chairs, flatscreen, etc) then you can ask for it, right? *unsure* just don't be whiny about it, hehe.

being in the HR dept, i'll share what little i know. well, at least in my dept, HR doesn't handle that kind of stuff ... we have an "administration" dept to handle things like cube space ... chairs and desk setup ... name plates ... useless crap like that

when it comes to computer stuff, there should be some kind of form you fill out for the IT dept and your manager signs off on it. I don't think that will go thru HR ... but HR should have that form. Depends on how well the HR dept is run and structured. Flat screens are par for the course on my floor ... all the new hires get 'em. But always call em up to "check on the status of your request"

I still don't have a name plate yet

Me to HR:
* What's in my personnel record file?
* Can I increase my life insurance policy?
* What is our 401K plan?
* What if I suspect illegal activity like "sexual harrassment" or "drug abuse"?

Me to my department manager:
* can i have a new computer?
* can i have a flat screen? a new set of chairs?
* can i get a new light bulb, a name placard for my door, and keys.

those are reasonable, of course.

i'd ask about that stuff if i actually understood how it all worked. i took a class in taxation that touched on that stuff...but i can't remember anything. all of this is pretty overwhelming.

Eek.. scary.

If my company had a way to log how much time I spend on forums boards.. I'd prolly be fired.. lol.

Anyways.. I work for a small company (6 ppl in our Shanghai office) so when I ask for stuff I just ask my boss. I'm pretty easy to please though. Just make sure I'm on a career development path, give me enough money to pay my bills and party every weekend, pay for my housing, and give me a performance evaluation every year or so and I'm allright.

Letsee:

1) Ask for my own cube? Checked.

2) Ask for a flat panel? Checked. Although right now the flat has been relegated to presentation usage for the sales personnel when they go on business trips.

3) Ask for a laptop? Didn't ask, but got one anyway.

4) Ask for my own company email address? I've been at work for a month and I don't have a company email address. But I'm the SysAdmin so I guess I'll ask myself about it =D
