Call for Legal Fellows from the Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach
Aug 25, 2002
From Victor Hwang
Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (formerly Nihonmachi Legal Outreach) is the largest nonprofit social justice law firm serving the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the Greater Bay Area. Established in 1975, API Legal Outreach provides multi-lingual and culturally appropriate legal services, advocacy and community outreach to the low-income API communities with a focus on domestic violence, immigration/immigrant rights, senior law, civil rights and human trafficking. With a staff of 24, we currently provide legal services in more than a dozen different Asian languages and dialects in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Mateo. We also host two advocacy projects targeting Youth Violence and Elder Abuse.
API Legal Outreach invites project proposals from third-year law students for Skadden, Equal Justice Works (NAPIL), echoing green, New Voices or other fellowships to begin in August 2003. Our priorities in the coming year will be to sponsor fellowships related to Youth Law, Immigration, Language Rights, or outreach to underserved API communities including Southeast Asians, Pacific Islanders and South Asians. Other proposals may be considered if there is a sufficient nexus to our core practice areas.
In previous years, API Legal Outreach has been awarded a Berkeley Law Foundation Fellowship to conduct domestic violence outreach to the Vietnamese community through educational campaigns targeting the nail salons and a New Voices Fellowship to develop a Northern California center against human trafficking.
Legal Fellows will be supervised by the Managing Attorney and mentored by our 10 attorneys on staff. For more information, contact Victor Hwang at vhwang@apilegaloutreach.org or visit our website at www.apilegaloutreach.org.
To apply, send a resume and two-page project proposal to:
