View Full Version : Where do you meet GLBT folks?
In lieu of the queer conference in NYC, I thought I'd ask folks where they go to meet GLBT folks in real life. Of course, this isn't restricted simply to queer YW members, but it would be enlightening to see if straight folks are purposely going to gay venues or not.

how do you figure out if they're LGBT? i think i've met my fair share of LGBT at ucla, but i could never tell and that question has never come up.
It's all based on your perception. In addition, you might wander into a queer place and not know...it's not always about feather boas and leather men.
I work at an LGBT community center, so I see my fair share of L, G. B & T's on a daily basis, but it is sometimes nice to go out to clubs and parties to get away from the more serious issues of the day and just be in a relaxed environment. Fortunately in SoCal, I have a wide range of choices.
since playing volleyball is pretty much the extent of my social life...that's where i meet gay/bi guy friends and acquaintances. here in sf, at least, there's a good-sized # of gay guys playing vball, and pretty competitively, too.

i don't have any friends that are gay. though i do know some people that are on my course and a former flatmate (suspected though)...i guess this goes into programs or conferences.
i don't avoid them, just that i've never come across a person i relate with who also happens to be gay.
i don't go out of my way to find a gay person. i only meet whom i come across...

I work with the LGBT Society here at Durham on social issues in conjunction with Amnesty International. It's a rewarding job. Granted, not many heterosexual people want to get involved with the LGBT Society due to outmoded perceptions that others will think they're gay, but it's always nice to see (once in awhile) that I'm not the only straight person who views people as who they are and not just a sexual preference singled out by society.
Everywhere. They are everywhere.
