My office recently got a new hire, and people are already making fun of this person behind said person's back. I personally think new hire seems nice, but is just nervous and is very shy.
Thus, what do you think I should do next time I see/hear people making fun of this person? Should I stand up for this new person or just walk away? Should I pull this new hire aside and give some advice or let this person see him/herself?
Thanks.

Maybe just talk to the new guy/girl/lifeform on your own at first, let them know they have a friend within the office. Chilling with you may get them out of the shy stage and not give the other people fodder for jokes. You can talk to the others about it also, but be prepared for backlash if they're not too apt to listen to you.

Well, what are the making fun of? How they look or act?
Or something stupid that they're saying?

Leave the new person alone. He/she has to learn how to survive on his/her own. I know I did.
The new chic, fresh grad, in my group seems nice. She always smile and seems pleasant all the time. I'll give her one more month and see if she will act the same way as now.

Thanks for the advice. They're picking on how new person looks and acts.

How effective is this new hire at work? If she has strong qualities you can bring the conversation back to her work ethic and positive qualities (if applicable) when it sidelines into personal comments. That should shut people up without taking sides. I did this a lot when lazy, but popular, office people would bitch about effective, but unpopular co-workers.
