Mark Anthony Lewis had a “dark and evil side,’’ a criminal court judge said Thursday in sentencing the Chicago man convicted as the North Side Rapist to 120 years in prison for attacking a 15-year-old girl. [details (http://yellowworld.org/?m=show&id=25)]

yeah, that was a good sentence.. life imprisonment. Yet, where's the justice for asian americans when not acknowledging it as a hate crime towards asian females. I mean, when ppl go to jail.. their crime is suppose to be acknowleged cuz they did this and that.... and a part of me feels like... a part of his crime went unnoticed....
And I feel its just weird how the law works.. and the standards that are placed on the punishment for a crime... like which is worse... sexual assault vs a hate crime towards a particular group... and I think both is kinda like a heinous act in itself...

good point, tapestrybabe. i was feeling uncomfortable about that issue myself. i guess--if we wanted to make a change--we could look into a way to increase the penalties for hate crimes--or to simply make it an enhancement to tack on to any crime. i think that would serve the purpose much better.
as for ipaki's tip re: going out with guys at night, i understand that's it's practical, but it's also not fair.

well he also mentioned u could go out with a group of buddies, which is what i do. personally, i still feel more comfortable having a guy around for the sense of security.

i've heard of it before. its like a gathering that speaks out on sexual abuse of women and children... and I know that Ive been kinda quiet on my own abusive encounters... perhaps i should attend one day.. and show support...

and kasia also mentioned.. how it's practical, but it's also not fair. Its not fair that we should have that type of fear...

yeh! you'll have fun. i was a sexual assault counselor in college, and we would work at the annual 'women take back the night'. there would be open mic and we would counsel women--rape victims--before they go up on stage to speak about what happened to them.
it's an extremely moving event. and it's inspiring how these women, after what they've been through, can remain strong enough to speak about their past in order to reach out and educate others.

Being safe is not practical, it's reality, or at least it should be for women.
It's also not fair that I can't leave my front door unlocked, but that's life.

i never proclaimed it to be fair...i hate it as a matter of fact. ive been assaulted several times too many. but until things start to change its better to be cautious. i also accept that until the situation changes to something more positive for women that its better not to have a false sense of security.

dont they have a castration penalty? he needs it. (or in that case doesn't need it anymore lol)
It's really amazing how many people said theyve had abuse situations here, is that commonplace for females to be assaulted? the media sure makes it look like it isnt.

i remember a while ago there was this case where the rapist was raping everyone in site -- old women, middle aged, even little kids. his defense? he claimed to have had too much testosterone and couldnt handle himself. the judge bought it and he got off with no jail time -- only an order to see a therapist and get some balancing hormonal drugs. when he raped again he claimed to have run out of medication or something like that. i dont remember how the story ended but im pretty sure he didnt serve any jail time, or if he did it was way minimal.

ohhh dont get me started on the justice system, how rapists get less time than people who took some money from a large company who didnt even miss it, and how killers ge treated better and with more respect than hackers or peopleaccused of computer crimes, oh and not to mention the stff that people with money and clout get away with! <huff, huff, huff> ok im done.....for now =)
