View Full Version : Ugh, serious monitor screen issue

well it doesnt render it unusable just a bit distracting. im not sure how to describe it, basically its a little darker than usual and there streaks of shadow and light on the screen sorta like a bar code though not as obvious. when you move a window up and down the barcode moves with it, parallel to the top and bottom of the window. if u dont have a window open it looks relatively normal. i havent done anything too unusual, i was bit torrenting earlier (the nature of the files i will not say  ) though nothing strange happened immediately after it finished. i shut down the monitor and left the comp to eat dinner, at this point im not dling or even keeping anything open, its just my desktop. so when i come back this is when it hits me. i restart the comp i change the resolution, the color, nothing i do works.

virus? plug in another monitor to see if you get the same problem. you've got the isolate the problem right now and it might be something on you computer or your monitor.

i just found a fucking trojan on my computer, what the hell gave me a mother fucking trojan? i haven't downloaded porn in forever and if it's micro-soft with their freaking security flaws again, i'm going to get pissed.

ben what anti-virus u use? mcafee blackmailed my ass cuz their free service expired. what kinda trojan usually a program will specify. i found one once too but i havent a clue what it did or how it got there, but it seemed harmless cuz nobody ever screwed with my comp or hacked an account

does moving around your monitor change it? unshielded speakers will fuck with the monitor? you're using a CRT and not an LCD right?

There was a story online earlier about a worm that's being sent through email with the subject line, "test". Might wanna be wary of it, if that was the case.

thanks for the heads up, but i downloaded no such worm. my friend down the hall, on other hand, is a computer n00b and downloaded a worm. i am in the process of providing tech support. i hate tech support, i do it for beer.

i have no idea what a CRT is. but yeah its not a flat screen its a typical TV style monitor (Envision). basically anything that pops up like a window or a folder window, even the toolbar tabs cast a shadow.

TB, Ben, i heard but im not a noob (not a Ism either) even if i did get that email i deleted it before i opened it period. i dont open attachments unless its from my parents and they never really send me any of that. i highly doubt its a worm. if it is SOMETHING like a virus (and not just some glitch in my monitor acting up) then it musta been from the Biblical movie files i was dling.

errr, i don't know man, just in case go to this address...

www.trendmicro.com and do an online scan just in case. i'm not sure what's going on though. the only thing that's happened to me like this was when my dad's ati video card killed itself and stopped working.

I don't see anything wrong with those pics, X. Try a different monitor, I suspect its a monitor issue if I can see your screen caps fine.

defrag your monitor and check your drivers.

there should be an option on your monitor to defrag it, and check your hardware drivers, like your display drivers if they need updating?

yeah there's definitely no barcode on that one, i had to look really hard for one on the other one, and i THOUGHT i saw one. try another monitor, it may be time to invest in another monitor.

No barcodes on any of the pictures.

I'd put money on a hardware issue.

hmm weird i figured it did show up in it cuz when i open it i see it, course my monitors not exactly impartial

I can't see it either, dude. Course you got so much going on it makes it kind of hard.

Okay, this is my really stupid tech-advice answer: Try shutting down your system and disconnecting and reconnecting your monitor.

Or try borrowing another monitor just to see.

Good advice actually. Sometimes the simplest answers are the correct ones. At a minimum, would eliminate a great deal of possibilities.

Degauss it if you have such an option. If it's possible, try the monitor on another computer. I've seen the problem before and sometimes it's a video driver corruption or problem with the video card (which one do you have, by the way?), or a CRT problem. Could also try switching resolutions, then reverting to older, known to be stable video drivers if that doesn't work.

gosh this is probly the most daunting compy problem ive had

anyway i just tried the comp with the monitor next to me and STILL the same problem so i switched back. hmm i suck at hardware i havent a clue what video card i have. thing is i played a lil Steam (HalfLife mods) and it worked perfectly fine.

it's probably the video card then....try to swap the vid card with another from a friends comp if possible...or if your motherboard doesn't require a vid card to display images, you can just hook up the monitor cable to the motherboard and see if you still get the problem.

i'm going to go out on a limb and say it might be a driver issue. um right click on your desktop, go to properties, then settings and tell me what's written under ... display. thanks!

I think he means he took the monitor off the computer (I assume its a desktop rather than a tower) and put it next to him, but the problem persists.

Not that he used a differnt monitor which happened to be sitting beside him.

I'm still betting on hardware issues, either monitor or video card.

well being A+ certified I'd have to say you need to go in the order of drivers, vid card, then monitor
try getting a fresh update of your drivers or reinstall them
if that don't work
swap vid cards with fresh drivers
then do monitors
but I guess you tried monitors already
the caps do look a bit off
but not bad

your first problem is using windows Me heheh
oh yeah CRT=cathode ray tube=tv style

just a few minutes ago my dad and i switched the video card from the adjacent computer. the shadows were gone BUT, a whole new problem emerged. for some reason the colors were 16 bit and the resolution 600 X 800 so the background was cut off AND black and white/washed out. not only that i couldnt change the resolution. but yeah the shadows were gone. i switch back and the shadows are still here so we're back to square one. at least i know its a vid card issue
